Such a medicine of comfort for you, a consolation of solace, we ask, we implore, that you bear the events with long-suffering, the painful things with thanksgiving, which we are persuaded you have had. Since from where else shall we bear the calamity? Then that from here also we shall gain great things, through inaction the greater success, through poverty the unchangeable wealth, through dishonor the undefiled glory. And perhaps our pious ruling emperors themselves will be persuaded at some late time to bring you back home and to restore what is due. For we know their love of mankind and readiness to repent, which they employ greatly in such matters. But as long as you remain, may the Lord God comfort you with a consolation of patient endurance and thanksgiving, and may He also persuade the rulers themselves to do for you what we have said before and to restore you, the much-desired one, to those who love you.
13 {1For the service of the uncared-for}1
Since man was created according to the image and likeness of God, it is necessary for human nature, as far as possible, as an image to bear in itself the imitations of the archetype. Since, therefore, the divine extends to all the providence of its own goodness, it would be just for the human to imitate, as far as possible, the providential administration of the ineffable wisdom. Wherefore we also, the humble and least, having piously looked to the divine and having taken up a loving disposition toward our fellow kind, have submitted ourselves to this pious system, as it is laid down below, making provision for the uncared-for tabernacles, that is to say, of the dead and who from poverty or from being a foreigner do not have the means to be carried out and buried in this queen of cities. Relying, therefore, on this divine model, and each year from the gifts present from God, each one according to his ability, making a contribution both for the purchase of burial shrouds and for the other things contributing to burial, we ordain in the Lord the following, these things being reported or observed periodically by each of those gathered in the brotherhood. a dead person, that this one be carried out with the proper burial shrouds and be laid in the holy tombs assigned to us. And indeed during the year, both at the beginning of the indiction and during the many days of Pentecost, that we celebrate in common the memorials for all those who have been buried, we holding at the same time from the contribution also a love-feast of bodily consolation, not, however, outside the customary bounds of sufficiency, so that we profane by either much wine or much food the memorials being celebrated; but as we with reverence offer up a doxology to God who has deemed us worthy to perform this holy ceremony, so to go to the need of the table, with the volume already being read aloud, so that even during our meal we may pursue the things pleasing to the Lord, the surplus being distributed to the poor, with no idle words circulating at the feast, nor jests, much less games, since the Word does not permit even the ordinary Christian to engage in them. And if it should be necessary to speak, those things which are fitting for Christians: that we refrain from an oath, to have love for one another, to speak truth from the mouth, to flee from deceit and envy, to hold fast to doing good according to one's ability, to make visits to those in prison and those in sickness, to pay attention to the readings and to the seats of honor in the churches, to prefer one another in honor, and especially priests of God and monks, to pursue hospitality, to abstain completely from fornication and drunkenness, to hold the orthodox faith, to avoid the communion of heretics. For indeed the speech of such things
