and a few neglected palm trees. Antony, therefore, as if moved by God, loved the place; for this was what he who had spoken to him by the banks of the river had indicated. So at first, having received loaves of bread from those who had journeyed with him, he remained on the mountain alone, with no one else with him; for, having recognized it as his own home, he possessed that place from then on. And the Saracens themselves, seeing Antony's eagerness, purposely passed by that way, and rejoicing brought him loaves of bread; and he had also at that time some slight and humble solace from the palm trees. But after this, the brethren, having learned of the place, like children remembering their father, took care to send things to him; but Antony, seeing that on the pretext of bread some were being troubled and enduring hardship; sparing the monks in this also, he took counsel with himself, and asked some of those who came to him to bring him a mattock, and an axe, and a little grain. And when these things were brought, having surveyed the land around the mountain, he found a very small suitable spot and cultivated it; and having an abundant supply of water for irrigation, he sowed. And doing this annually, he had his bread from there; rejoicing that he would be troublesome to no one for this reason, and that in all things he kept himself from being a burden. But after this, seeing again some people coming, he also cultivated a few vegetables, so that a visitor might have some small comfort from the hardship of that difficult road. At first, then, the wild beasts in the desert, 26.917 coming on account of the water, often damaged his crop and his tillage; but he, having gracefully caught one of the beasts, said to them all: "Why do you harm me, when I do you no harm? Go away, and in the name of the Lord, come no more near this place." And from that time on, as if fearing the command, they no longer approached the place. He himself, then, was alone in the inner mountain, devoting himself to prayers and ascetic practice; but the brethren who ministered to him requested him, that coming every few months they might bring him olives and pulses and oil; for he was by then an old man. There, then, living his life, how many struggles he endured, according to what is written, not against flesh and blood, but against the opposing demons, we learned from those who came to him. For there they heard tumults, and many voices, and clashings, as of weapons; and they saw the mountain at night become full of wild beasts; and they saw him as if fighting against visible beings, and praying against them. And he encouraged those who came to him, but he himself struggled, bending his knees and praying to the Lord. And it was truly worthy of wonder that, being alone in such a wilderness, he was neither terrified by the attacking demons, nor, with so many four-footed beasts and reptiles there, was he afraid of their fierceness; but truly, according to what is written, he trusted in the Lord as Mount Sion, having his mind unshaken and untroubled; so that the demons rather fled, and the wild beasts, as it is written, were at peace with him. The devil, therefore, as David sings in the Psalms, watched Antony, and gnashed his teeth against him; but Antony was comforted by the Savior, remaining unharmed from his villainy and varied wiles. Therefore, one night as he was keeping watch, he sent wild beasts upon him; and almost all the hyenas in that desert, coming out of their dens, surrounded him, and he was in the midst; and as each one gaped and threatened to bite, perceiving the artifice of the enemy, he said to them all: "If you have received power against me, I am ready to be devoured by you; but if you have been sent by demons, do not
