to the Jews, whom also Moses the prophet foretold, about whom God testified beforehand saying, And the man who will not listen to all that the prophet will speak in my name, I will take vengeance on him. Indeed, the blood of all, from Abel to Zechariah who was murdered between the temple and the altar, has been avenged on the generation that rose up against the Savior, and especially of those who dared to release against him the cry for the cross, for the cross for him, Away with such a one from the earth; His blood be upon us and upon our children; which also happened immediately, God having avenged the blood of Christ on those very people and on their children, as he had said beforehand, and at the same time justice having come upon them, so that from that time until now the whole nation has not been able to lift its head at all, another prophecy of Amos also having been fulfilled which says, The house of Israel has fallen, it will no more rise again; which the apostle, foreseeing in the spirit, also proclaimed, saying, But wrath has come upon them to the uttermost. Ps. Of the Ode. 10. Rejoice, O heavens, with him, and let all the angels of God worship him; rejoice, O nations, with his people, and let all the sons of God be strong in him. And to whom else would the divine Spirit command his angels to worship than to Christ, at whose coming the nations clearly rejoiced with his people, the 52 choir of the righteous patriarchs and prophets; concerning which nations, again in the same ode, addressing another people, God says, They have made me jealous with what is no god, they have provoked me to anger with their idols; and I will make them jealous with those who are not a nation, with a foolish nation I will provoke them to anger. And it is quite clear that after their rejection God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise among them; and God chose the weak things of the world, and the base things, and the things which are despised, and the things which are not, to bring to nothing the things that formerly were among them; because indeed, formerly from the time of his Moses they worshipped idols, and provoked God to anger and jealousy, and when his Christ came, they did not receive him; but the nations, having come to know through him the Father and God of all, according to the prophecy at hand, will rejoice with his holy people; and all the sons of God strengthened Christ, both those who prophesied about him before, and as many as after his coming received the spirit of adoption and proclaimed him to the whole world. So much then from the Pentateuch; let us proceed also to the following scriptures. Ps. From the writing of Joshua. 17. And it happened when Joshua was in Jericho, that he looked up and saw a man standing opposite him, with a drawn sword in his hand. And Joshua went to him and said, Are you for us, or for our adversaries? And he said to him, I am the commander of the army of the Lord; now I have come. 53 And Joshua fell on his face to the ground, and said to him, Master, what do you command your servant? And the commander of the army of the Lord said to Joshua, Take off your sandal from your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground. And who else could be the commander of the army of the Lord, than the Christ of God, the ruler of all the holy and spiritual army of God? See then if it is not also the same one who spoke to Moses through the angel on the mountain, who is revealed by the words to Joshua; for what was said now to this man, was also said similarly to Moses by the Lord through the angel when he was beginning to see the vision, according to the command, "take off the sandal from your feet," and what follows. For the Christ of God, being one of many names, is now called commander of the army of the Lord; as also in Isaiah, Angel of great counsel; in the passage, and they will wish they had been burned with fire; For a child is born to us, a son is also given to us, whose government is on his shoulder, and his name is called, Angel of great counsel. And you would find him also in Malachi named angel of the covenant,
