he led the deceived astray, the wretched man being supposed to be a corrector of the aforementioned deceivers, being most experienced in magical trickery. And having deceived all the aforementioned men and women to pay attention to him, as to one most knowledgeable, and the greatest power from the invisible and unnameable places Another of their teachers, Marcus, experienced in magic, partly through trickery of gifts and incantations, and partly through demons, deceived many. Again, giving mixed cups to women, he commands them to give thanks while he stands by. And when this is done, he himself, bringing forth Int. προενεγκών. Hipp. another cup much larger than that one over which the deceived woman gave thanks, holding and pouring from the smaller one, which had been consecrated by the woman, into the one prepared by him Int. κεκομισμένον, at the same time saying thus: May the Grace which is before all things, the inconceivable and ineffable one, fill your inner man, and multiply in you her knowledge, sowing the grain of mustard seed into the good earth. And having said some such things, and having driven the wretched woman out of her mind ἐκστήσας Hippol., he appeared a wonder-worker, the large cup having been filled from the small one, so that it even overflowed from it. And doing some other similar things, he deceived many, and led them away after him. It is likely that he also has a familiar spirit, by means of which he both seems to prophesy, and makes to prophesy as many as he deems worthy to be partakers of his grace. For he is especially occupied with women, and of these, especially those with fine robes, and dressed in purple, and the wealthiest, whom he often attempts to lead astray, saying to them with flattery: I wish to impart to you of my grace, since the Father of all always sees your angel before his face; but the place of greatness is in us, for us to establish l. δεῖ ἡμᾶς ἓν καταστῆσαι. Receive first from me, and through me, the grace. Prepare yourself, as a bride awaiting her bridegroom, that you may be what I am, and I what you are. Establish in your bridal chamber the seed of light. Receive the bridegroom from me, and contain him, and be contained in him. Behold, grace has descended upon you; open your mouth, and prophesy. But when the woman answers, "I have never prophesied, and I do not know how to prophesy," making some invocations a second time to the astonishment of the deceived woman, he says to her: Open your mouth, speak whatever comes, and you shall prophesy. But she, puffed up and gulled by the aforesaid things, her soul being heated by the expectation that she is about to prophesy, her heart beating more than is necessary, dares to speak Int. καὶ λαλεῖ nonsensical and random things vainly and rashly, as one heated by an empty spirit; (as one better than us said concerning such things, that a rash and shameless soul is heated by empty air,) and from this point forward she regards herself as a prophetess,

Τῆς δὲ γυναικὸς ἀποκρινομένης, οὐ προεφήτευσα πώποτε, καὶ οὐκ οἶδα προφητεύειν· ἐπικλήσεις τινὰς ποιούμενος ἐκ δευτέρου εἰς κατάπληξιν τῆς ἀπατωμένης, φησὶν αὐτῇ· Ἄνοιξον τὸ στόμα σου, λάλησον ὅ τι δήποτε, καὶ προφητεύσεις. Ἡ δὲ χαυνωθεῖσα, καὶ κεπφωθεῖσα ὑπὸ τῶν προειρημένων, διαθερμανθεῖσα τὴν ψυχὴν ὑπὸ τῆς προσδοκίας τοῦ μέλλειν αὐτὴν προφητεύειν, τῆς καρδίας πλέον τοῦ δέοντος παλλούσης, ἀποτολμᾷ λαλεῖν Int. καὶ λαλεῖ ληρώδη καὶ τὰ τυχόντα πάντα κενῶς καὶ τολμηρῶς, ἅτε ὑπὸ κενοῦ τεθερμαμένη πνεύματος· (καθὼς ὁ κρείσσων ἡμῶν ἔφη περὶ τῶν τοιούτων, ὅτι τολμηρὸν καὶ ἀναιδὲς ψυχὴ κενῷ ἀέρι θερμαινομένη,) καὶ ἀπὸ τούτου λοιπὸν προφήτιδα ἑαυτὴν μεταλαμβάνει,
