And a certain Artemon, whom some 83.392 call Artemas, held opinions similar to ours concerning the God of all, saying that he is the maker of the universe; but he said that the Lord Jesus Christ was a mere man, born of a virgin, but superior to the prophets in virtue. And he said that the apostles had proclaimed these things, misinterpreting the meaning of the divine Scriptures, but that those after them deified Christ, who was not God. 5. - Concerning Theodotus. And Theodotus the Byzantine, the leatherworker, having thought the same things as this man, became the leader of another faction. This man the thrice-blessed Victor, the bishop of the Romans, excommunicated, as one who had tried to corrupt the dogmas of the Church. Against the heresy of these men the 'Little Labyrinth' was written, which some suppose to be a work of Origen, but the style refutes those who say so. But whether he or another wrote it, he recounts in it the following narrative. He said that a certain Natalius, who had been one of the noble confessors, was deceived by Asclepiades and another Theodotus, who were of the same heresy, so as to become president of the faction for a salary, on account of his distinction as a confessor. And they promised to provide him one hundred and fifty denarii each day. The physician of souls often advised this man to be freed from his error, saying that it was not for these things but for the evangelical dogmas that he had contended. But since he did not yield, being enslaved by the honor which he supposed he had as leader of the deceived, He brought upon him harsh scourgings through angels. But having learned by experience of what things resisting God is the cause, he quickly came to the church in the morning; and prostrating himself before the high priest, he begged that intercession be offered for him to the man-loving Master. He pitied him, wailing and beseeching, and held out a hand for repentance. Having said these things about this man, the aforementioned author added that those who composed the heresy dared to corrupt the divine Scripture, both cutting some things out and adding others; saying they were correcting the things that were not right, and showing themselves to be wiser than the all-holy Spirit. And he says that they did not even do this in agreement, but Theodotus in one way, and Asclepiades in another, and Hermophilus in another, and Apollonides in another; and that each of these made further corrections to their own, so that there is great disagreement among the copies. Therefore, concerning these men, we have learned these things. 6. - Concerning the Melchizedekians. The Melchizedekians, they say, are a branch of these, but disagree on one point only, that they suppose 83.393 Melchizedek to be a certain divine and very great power, and that Christ was made in his image. And the founder of this heresy was another Theodotus, a money-changer by trade. 7. - Concerning the Elkesaites. The Elkesaites, having taken their name from a certain Elkesai who founded the heresy, having collected myths from various heresies, have composed their own

Εἴτε δὲ ἐκεῖνος, εἴτε ἄλλος συνέγραψε, τοιόνδε ἐν αὐτῷ διηγεῖται δι ήγημα.
