they do, but they celebrate their Feast of Tabernacles when among the Jews it is the Feast of Unleavened Bread and the Passover. But they were not persuaded by the Sebuaeans. Against the Gorothenes, heresy 3 from the Samaritans, and 12 in the sequence. Both the Gorothenes and the others. But the Essenes, being near the others, do the same things as them; but only the Gorothenes and Dositheans maintain the rivalry against the Sebuaeans. and they themselves hold the feasts, I mean the Gorothenes and Dositheans, when the Jews celebrate, both of Unleavened Bread and Passover, and of Pentecost and Tabernacles and the one day of fasting observed among them. But the others do not do so, but separately in the months we mentioned before. Against the Dositheans, heresy 4 from the Samaritans, and 13 in the sequence. But the Dositheans differ from these in many ways. For they confess a resurrection and there are rules of life among them; 1.206 they abstain from things with a soul, but also some of them are continent from marriage after † living, while others even remain virgins; and likewise they hold to circumcision and the sabbath, and to not touching anyone because they abominate every person. The account has it that they observe and practice the same fasts. But the reason for Dositheus thinking these things is this: this man, coming from the Jews, mingled with the Samaritan nations, and being advanced in the education according to the law and in the traditions among them, but seeking the first place and failing and not being deemed worthy to be considered someone among the Jews, he turned aside to the Samaritan race and established this heresy. and withdrawing somewhere into a cave out of an excess of pretended philosophy, vainly and hypocritically enduring in fasting, as the story goes, thus he died from lack of bread and water, supposedly by his own will. and after some days those who came to check on him found the body stinking and crawling with worms, and a cloud of flies had swarmed over it. This man, therefore, having thus vainly ended his own life, became for them the cause of the heresy, from whom those who imitate him are called Dositheans or Dosithenes. And these are the differences that have come to our knowledge concerning the aforementioned four heresies, which will be overturned 1.207 by the things said against them. But I will return again, stringing together the insertions in succession of the times and the pastures of error, and making the refutation against them, in revealing their wicked practices and making the confutation by a brief account of the venom-casting of the evil and destructive serpents. The 4 heresies of the Samaritans are completed. Judaism next. But Judaism was divided into seven heresies: Against the Sadducees, heresy 1 from Judaism, and 14 in the sequence. 1. Again, after these aforementioned heresies of the Samaritans and those of the Greeks previously set forth above, there came to be seven heresies in number among the Jews before the incarnate coming of Christ in Judea and Jerusalem. 2. First, the Sadducees, being a splinter group from the aforementioned Dositheus. and these name themselves Sadducees, supposedly from righteousness, the appellation being derived; For Sedek is interpreted righteousness. And there was also someone named Saddouk among the priests in ancient times. But these did not remain in the teaching of their master. 1.208 For they rejected the resurrection of the dead, thinking similar things to the Samaritans; but they do not accept angels, which the Samaritans do not reject; and they do not know the holy spirit, for they have not been deemed worthy of it; and they observe all things the same as the Samaritans. But these were not Samaritans, but Jews. For they sacrificed in Jerusalem and did all other things together with the Jews. 3. And they themselves also will be overturned by the trustworthy voice of the Lord, which they
