but it has no opportunity. But if where there is a man's anger, the power of money is put to the test, much more will this happen at the divine and incorruptible judgment seat. If it is a man who is provoked and indignant, and gold does not help us at all now, much more when God who has no need of money is angry, will the power of gold utterly fail. We build houses, that we may dwell, not that we may show off. That which is greater than our need, is superfluous to our need and useless. Put on a shoe bigger than your foot; but you will not bear it; for it hinders you in walking; so also a house larger than what is needed hinders the journey to heaven. Do you wish to build splendid and large houses? I do not forbid it, but not on earth; build dwellings in heaven, that you may be able to receive others also, dwellings that are never destroyed. Why are you mad for things that flee, and things that remain here? Nothing is more treacherous than wealth, today with you, and tomorrow against you, it arms the eyes of the envious on all sides; it is a foe that dwells in the same tent, an enemy that lives in the same house; and you who possess it are witnesses, you who in every way bury it and hide it; since even now wealth makes the danger more unbearable for us. You see, at any rate, the poor are girded and free, and prepared for everything; but the rich having much difficulty, and going about, and seeking where they might bury their gold, seeking with whom they might deposit it. Why do you seek, O man, your fellow-servants? Christ stands ready to receive, and to keep for you the deposits, not only to keep them, but also to increase them, and to give them back with a great addition; from his hand no one snatches. And not only does He keep the deposits, but He also frees you from dangers for this very reason. For in the case of men, those who receive deposits think they have done us a favor, guarding what they have received; but in the case of Christ, it is the opposite; for not to have done a favor, but to have received a favor, when He receives your deposits, He says, and for the very keeping, which He shows concerning your money, He does not demand a reward from you, but gives you a reward.

6. Of what defense, then, would we be worthy, or of what pardon, when, passing by Him who is able to guard, and knows gratitude for the guarding, and gives back unspoken and great rewards in return for this guarding, we entrust our things to men who are weak in 49.42 this guarding, and think they are doing us a favor, and later give back only the things that were given? Are you a stranger and a sojourner here? You have a fatherland in heaven, transfer all things there, so that even before the enjoyment, you may enjoy the reward here. For he who is nurtured by good hopes and is confident about the things to come, has already tasted of the kingdom from here. For nothing is so accustomed to restore the soul and make it better, as a good hope of things to come, if you transfer your wealth there, and take care of your soul with fitting leisure. For those who empty all their zeal into the adornment of their own house, being rich in outward things, neglect the things within, overlooking their own soul as deserted and squalid and full of cobwebs; but if, neglecting the things outside, they expend all their eagerness on their own mind, adorning it from all sides, the soul of such people will be a dwelling for Christ; and what could ever be more blessed than the one who has Christ as a dweller? Do you wish to be rich? Have God as a friend, and you will be wealthier than all. Do you wish to be rich? Do not be high-minded; this is fitting not for the things to come, but also for the present; for nothing is so subject to envy as a rich man; but when arrogance is also present, the precipice becomes twofold, the war from all sides more difficult. But if you know how to be moderate, you undermine the tyranny of envy with humility, and with

Εἰ ἄνθρωπός ἐστιν ὁ παροξυνόμενος καὶ ἀγανακτῶν, καὶ οὐδὲν ἡμᾶς τὸ χρυσίον ὠφελεῖ νῦν, πολλῷ μᾶλλον ὀργιζομένου τοῦ Θεοῦ τοῦ μὴ δεομένου χρημάτων, ἀσθενήσει πάντως τοῦ χρυσίου ἡ δύναμις. Οἰκίας οἰκοδομούμεθα, ἵνα οἰκῶμεν, οὐχ ἵνα φιλοτιμώμεθα Τὸ μεῖζον τῆς χρείας, περιττὸν τῆς χρείας ἐστὶ καὶ ἄχρηστον. Ὑπόδησαι ὑπόδημα τοῦ ποδὸς μεῖζον· ἀλλ' οὐκ ἀνέξῃ· ἐμποδίζει γάρ σοι πρὸς τὴν βάδισιν· οὕτω καὶ οἰκία μείζων τῆς χρείας ἐμποδίζει πρὸς τὴν εἰς οὐρανοὺς ἀποδημίαν. Τί μέμηνας περὶ τὰ φεύγοντα, καὶ τὰ ἐνθάδε μένοντα; Οὐδὲν σφαλερώτερον πλούτου, σήμερον μετὰ σοῦ, καὶ αὔριον κατὰ σοῦ, τοὺς τῶν βασκάνων ὀφθαλμοὺς ὁπλίζει πάντοθεν· πολέμιός ἐστιν ὁμόσκηνος, ἐχθρὸς σύνοικος· καὶ μάρτυρες ὑμεῖς οἱ κεκτημένοι, οἱ παντὶ τρόπῳ κατορύττοντες αὐτὸν καὶ ἀποκρύπτοντες· ἐπεὶ καὶ νῦν τὸν κίνδυνον ἀφορητότερον ἡμῖν ὁ πλοῦτος ποιεῖ. Ὁρᾷς γοῦν τοὺς μὲν πένητας εὐζώνους καὶ ἀπολελυμένους, καὶ πρὸς ἅπαντα παρεσκευασμένους· τοὺς δὲ πλουσίους πολλὴν ἔχοντας δυσκολίαν, καὶ περιιόντας, καὶ ζητοῦντας ποῦ τὸ χρυσίον κατορύξωσι, ζητοῦντας τίνι κατάθοιντο. Τί ζητεῖς, ἄνθρωπε, τοὺς ὁμοδούλους; ἕστηκεν ὁ Χριστὸς ἕτοιμος ὑποδέξασθαι, καὶ τηρῆσαί σοι τὰς παρακαταθήκας, οὐχὶ τηρῆσαι δὲ μόνον, ἀλλὰ καὶ πλεονάσαι, καὶ μετὰ πολλῆς ἀποδοῦναι τῆς προσθήκης· ἐκ τῆς ἐκείνου χειρὸς οὐδεὶς ἁρπάζει. Οὐ τηρεῖ δὲ μόνον τὰς παρακαταθήκας, ἀλλὰ καὶ ὑπὲρ αὐτοῦ τούτου λύει σοι τοὺς κινδύνους. Ἐπὶ μὲν γὰρ τῶν ἀνθρώπων οἱ δεξάμενοι τὰς παρακαταθήκας χάριν ἡμῖν δεδωκέναι νομίζουσι, φυλάττοντες ἅπερ ἔλαβον· ἐπὶ δὲ τοῦ Χριστοῦ τοὐναντίον· οὐ γὰρ δεδωκέναι χάριν, ἀλλ' εἰληφέναι χάριν, ὅταν δέξηταί σου τὰς παρακαταθήκας, φησὶν, καὶ ὑπὲρ τῆς φυλακῆς αὐτῆς, ἣν περὶ τὰ χρήματα ἐπιδείκνυται τὰ σὰ, οὐκ ἀπαιτεῖ σε μισθὸν, ἀλλὰ δίδωσί σοι μισθόν.

Ἄρα τίνος ἂν εἴημεν ἀπολογίας ἄξιοι, τίνος δὲ συγγνώμης, ὅταν παρατρέχοντες τὸν καὶ φυλάξαι δυνάμενον, καὶ χάριν ὑπὲρ τῆς φυλακῆς εἰδότα, καὶ μισθοὺς ἀποῤῥήτους καὶ μεγάλους ἀποδιδόντα ἀντὶ τῆς φυλακῆς ταύτης τοῖς κατὰ τὴν φυλακὴν ταύτην ἀσθενοῦσιν ἀν 49.42 θρώποις, καὶ χάριν ἡμῖν διδόναι νομίζουσι, καὶ μόνα αὐτὰ τὰ διδόμενα ἀποδιδοῦσιν ὕστερον, ἐκείνοις τὰ ἡμέτερα ἐγχειρίζωμεν; Ξένος εἶ καὶ παρεπίδημος τῶν ἐνταῦθα; πατρίδα ἔχεις ἐν οὐρανοῖς, πάντα ἐκεῖ μετάθες, ἵνα καὶ πρὸ τῆς ἀπολαύσεως ἐνταῦθα ἀπολαύσῃς τῆς ἀμοιβῆς. Ὁ γὰρ χρησταῖς συντρεφόμενος ἐλπίσι καὶ περὶ τῶν μελλόντων θαῤῥῶν, ἐντεῦθεν ἤδη τῆς βασιλείας ἐγεύσατο. Οὐδὲν γὰρ οὕτω ψυχὴν εἴωθεν ἀνακτᾶσθαι καὶ ἀμείνω ποιεῖν, ὡς ἡ χρηστὴ τῶν μελλόντων ἐλπὶς, ἐὰν ἐκεῖ μεταθῇς τὸν πλοῦτον, καὶ τῆς ψυχῆς ἐπιμελήσῃ τῆς σεαυτοῦ μετὰ σχολῆς τῆς προσηκούσης. Οἱ μὲν γὰρ ἅπασαν τὴν σπουδὴν εἰς τὸν καλλωπισμὸν κενοῦντες τῆς ἑαυτῶν οἰκίας, ἐν τοῖς ἔξω πλουτοῦντες, ἀμελοῦσι τῶν ἔνδον, ἔρημον καὶ αὐχμῶσαν καὶ ἀραχνίων γέμουσαν περιορῶντες τὴν ἑαυτῶν ψυχήν· ἂν δὲ τῶν ἔξωθεν ἀμελήσαντες, εἰς τὴν ἑαυτῶν διάνοιαν τὴν προθυμίαν καταναλώσωσιν ἅπασαν, πανταχόθεν αὐτὴν καλλωπίζοντες, καταγώγιον ἔσται τῷ Χριστῷ τῶν τοιούτων ἀνθρώπων ἡ ψυχή· τοῦ δὲ τὸν Χριστὸν ἔχοντος ἔνοικον, τί γένοιτ' ἂν μακαριώτερον πώποτε; Βούλει πλουτεῖν; ἔχε φίλον τὸν Θεὸν, καὶ πάντων εὐπορώτερος ἔσῃ. Βούλει πλουτεῖν; μὴ μέγα φρόνει· τοῦτο οὐ πρὸς τὰ μέλλοντα, ἀλλὰ καὶ πρὸς τὰ παρόντα ἐπιτήδειον· οὐδὲν γὰρ οὕτως ἐπίφθονον, ὡς ἄνθρωπος πλουτῶν· ὅταν δὲ καὶ ἀπόνοια προσῇ, διπλοῦς ὁ κρημνὸς γίνεται, χαλεπώτερος παρὰ πάντων ὁ πόλεμος.
