5. However, why should we speak at length? In the holy Anaphora at the holy

table, after the bishops and deacons, and every priestly order, after the laity the emperors are commemorated, the deacon saying: And of the laymen who have fallen asleep in the faith, Constantine, Constans, and the rest. So also he commemorates the living emperors, after all the clergy.

As he was saying these things, Menas cries out: In saying these things you have divided the Church.

And he says to him: If the one who speaks the things of the holy Scriptures, and of the holy Fathers divides the Church, the one who abolishes the doctrines of the saints, what will he be shown to be doing to the Church, without which it is not possible for it even to be a Church?

And the sacellarius turning, said to the 0120 men of the exarch with a shout: Tell the exarch: Should you have let such a man live where you rule?

And taking him outside, they bring in the disciple, and demanding him to speak against his master, as one who had troubled Pyrrhus, he answered with a calm voice the things of the truth, that no one honored Pyrrhus as he had honored him; and he is ordered to shout.

And since he did not consent to be estranged from the reverent 15Γ_088 voice that is fitting for monks, he orders him to be struck by those standing by; and striking him with their fists, they have left him half-dead. And having released them to the prisons Menas comes upon the elder, saying in the presence of the rulers:

God has cast you down, and has brought you here, so that you might receive what you have done to others, leading everyone astray into the doctrines of Origen.

To whom the servant of God said in the presence of all: Anathema to Origen and to his doctrines, and to everyone who thinks like him. And the patrician Epiphanius says: the accusation brought against him by you, my lord Abba Menas, has been resolved, for even if he was an Origenist, when he anathematized, he freed himself from such a charge. And I for my part no longer accept such a thing being said about him. Each of them was led away to the place where he was being guarded.

6 . And on the same day around the same lighting of the lamp, Troilus the patrician,

and Sergius Eucratas, the one in charge of the imperial table, came to the servant of God the elder, and having sat down, they bade him also to sit, and said to him: Tell us, my lord Abba, about the dispute concerning the dogmas that took place between you and Pyrrhus in Africa and Rome; and by what means did you persuade him to anathematize his own dogma, and to agree with yours. And he recounted to them everything in order, as much as his memory preserved.

And this he said, that I have no dogma of my own, but the common one of the catholic Church. For I have not advanced any teaching whatsoever, that it might be called my own dogma;

15Γ_090 And after the narration they say to him: Are you not in communion with the throne of Constantinople?

And he said: I am not in communion. For what reason are you not in communion, they said? He answered: Because they cast out the four holy councils through the nine

chapters composed in Alexandria; and through the Ecthesis composed by Sergius in this city, and through the Typos recently issued on this account in the sixth indiction; and because what they dogmatized through the chapters, through the Ecthesis

Καί λέγει πρός αὐτόν· Εἰ ὁ λέγων τά τῶν ἁγίων Γραφῶν, καί τά τῶν ἁγίων Πατέρων σχίζει τήν Ἐκκλησίαν, ὁ ἀναιρῶν τά τῶν ἁγίων δόγματα, τί δειχθήσεται τῇ Ἐκκλησίᾳ ποιῶν, ὧν χωρίς, οὐδέ αὐτό τοῦτο, Ἐκκλησίαν εἶναι δυνατόν;

Καί στραφείς ὁ σακελλάριος, εἶπε τοῖς 0120 ἀνθρώποις τοῦ ἐξάρχου μετά κραυγῆς· Εἴπατε τῷ ἐξάρχῳ· Τοιοῦτον ἄνθρωπον ὤφειλες ἐᾶσαι ζῇν ὅπου ἄρχεις;

15Γ_090 Καί μετά τήν ἀφήγησιν λέγουσιν αὐτῷ· Οὐ κοινωνεῖς τῷ θρόνῳ Κωνσταντινουπόλεως;
