the Holy Spirit given to man is cheerful. Secondly, by grieving the Holy Spirit he works lawlessness, neither petitioning nor confessing to the Lord. For the petition of a grieving man never has the power to ascend to the altar of God. "Why," I say, "does the petition of the one who is grieving not ascend to the altar?" "Because," he says, "grief is seated in his heart. Grief, therefore, being mixed with the petition, does not permit the petition to ascend pure to the altar. For just as vinegar and wine mixed together do not have the same pleasantness, so also grief mixed with the Holy Spirit does not have the same petition. Cleanse yourself therefore from this wicked grief, and you shall live to God; and all shall live to God who cast off grief from themselves and put on all cheerfulness. Commandment 11 He showed me men sitting on a bench, and another man sitting on a chair. And he says to me, "Do you see those sitting on the bench?" "I see, sir," I say. "These," he says, "are faithful, and the one sitting on the chair is a false prophet who destroys the mind of the servants of God; but he destroys the double-minded, not the faithful. These double-minded then come to him as to a soothsayer and inquire of him what will happen to them. And that false prophet, having in himself no power of the divine Spirit, speaks with them according to their questions and according to the desires of their wickedness, and fills their souls just as they themselves wish. For being empty himself, he gives empty answers to empty people. For whatever he may be asked, he answers according to the emptiness of the man. But he also speaks some true words; for the devil fills him with his own spirit, if he might be able to break any of the righteous. As many, therefore, as are strong in the faith of the Lord, clothed with the truth, do not cling to such spirits, but keep away from them. But as many as are double-minded and frequently repent, they practice divination just as the Gentiles do, and bring greater sin upon themselves by practicing idolatry. For he who inquires of a false prophet concerning any matter is an idolater and empty of the truth and foolish. For every spirit given from God is not questioned, but having the power of the Godhead speaks all things of itself, because it is from above, from the power of the divine Spirit. But the spirit that is questioned and speaks according to the desires of men is earthly and light, having no power; and it does not speak at all unless it is questioned. "How then, sir," I say, "will a man know which of them is a prophet and which a false prophet?" "Listen," he says, "concerning both the prophets; and as I am about to tell you, so you will test the prophet and the false prophet. From his life test the man who has the divine Spirit. First, the one who has the Spirit from above is meek and quiet and humble-minded, and refrains from all wickedness and vain desire of this age, and makes himself more needy than all men, and answers nothing to anyone when questioned, nor does he speak in private, nor does the Holy Spirit speak when a man wishes to speak, but it speaks then, when God wishes it to speak. When, therefore, the man who has the divine Spirit comes into an assembly of righteous men who have faith in a divine spirit, and a petition is made to God by the assembly of those men, then the angel of the prophetic spirit who is set over him fills the man
