to those who have been reminded by the paraclete, but for those hearing it for a second time such a promise is fitting; for it is not he who is just now learning for the first time who is reminded, but he who is hearing for a second time those things which he has already learned before. It is therefore impossible for these things to have been said concerning Montanus and Priscilla and Maximilla, who had neither seen the Lord nor heard anything from him, <so that> having heard they might seem to be reminded. 272 Jo 14 , 26 No one is able to come to remembrance, except of things he has already heard, which is what the Spirit promises to do. How then is it possible to say that Montanus and Priscilla, having neither seen Christ nor heard anything from him, were the first to receive the Spirit? For of what could the Spirit have reminded them, when they had heard absolutely nothing? 273 Jo 14, 27 My peace I give to you. This joins to the Father those who come to be in possession of it, and it works one mind among the saints. And not only does it join all together with one another, but also it makes each one individually harmonious with himself; for since, I think, human nature was formerly set against itself by the plot of the adversary and, as it were, received a civil war into itself when the evil one raised up the worse against the better and fortified the flesh against the spirit, it needed the peace from the Lord, so that the soul, receiving back the flesh as well-reined and the body as obedient, might be able to be delivered from the civil strife. 274 Jo 14, 27 Having made them at peace with the Father, he firmly teaches them to guard this. And through what he adds, he shows that there is another, exceptional peace from him, besides that of the world, being firm and true and leading the faithful to one harmony and to one mind. And not only does the peace from divine grace persuade us to be at peace with those outside, but also with ourselves; for nature, having been thrown into confusion against itself by the devil from the beginning, was at war, but the peace of the Lord makes the flesh obedient to the soul, through which the civil wars are put to rest. 275 Jo 14, 28 It was necessary then, if they had perfect love, not to overlook what was exceedingly beneficial, but to rejoice, if indeed he was separated from them; but since, he says, you greatly thirst for my bodily presence, yet at least because you have heard that I am going to the Father, you ought to rejoice. And he says the Father is greater economically, since not even the disciples yet had the proper opinion concerning him, having been previously catechized from the law to worship only one God and Father. 276 Jo 14, 28 Having been separated from them for a short time, the time of the passion, and being about to manifest himself to them after the resurrection, he fulfilled the promise concerning this. 277 Jo 14, 29 By experience the Lord confirmed his own truthfulness. 278 Jo 14, 30-31 Since the plotter was near, the time no longer permitted him to say more. And he calls the devil the ruler of the world, as one who through deceit ruled the world for a little while by God's permission.
