also Constantia. In the same year also Julius the pope in Rome fell asleep, and Liberius was ordained in his place, a man in all things admirable and orthodox. But the Arians so persuaded the emperor against Athanasius, as to condemn him to capital punishment. But then too the saint secured his safety by flight. Year of the world 5850. Year of the divine incarnation 350. Emperor of the Romans Constantius, 24 years. 22. King of the Persians Sapor, 70 years. 56. Bishop of Rome Damasus, 28 years. 6. Bishop of Constantinople Macedonius, year 1. 1. Bishop of Jerusalem Hilarius, 12 years. 4. Bishop of Alexandria Athanasius, 46 years. 32. Bishop of Antioch Stephen, 3 years. 3. In this year, a great earthquake having occurred in Nicomedia around the third hour of the night, it cast down the city and destroyed great multitudes; and the bishop of the city, Cecropius, also perished with them. Bishop of Antioch Leontius, 8 years. 23. 57. 7. 2. 5. 33. 1. Bishop of Constantinople Eudoxius, Macedonius having been expelled. 24. 58. 8. 1. 6. 34. 2. 46 When Macedonius, therefore, was tyrannically holding the throne of Constantinople, he moved the body of the great Constantine to Saint Acacius from the Holy Apostles, giving as a pretext the collapse of the church. But when the people prevented it, a great slaughter occurred, so that the well and the court of the martyrium and the surrounding squares were filled with blood; which Constantius, upon learning of it, became enraged against Macedonius, and having ordered him to be deposed, he installed Eudoxius in his place, exchanging a great evil for a greater evil. In this year the Persians took the fortress called Bezabde. And Constantius, having heard that Julian, having distinguished himself in the wars in Gaul, was proclaimed emperor by the army, while staying in Antioch on account of the Persian war, set out against Julian the tyrant; and having come to Mampsucrenae, the first station from Tarsus of Cilicia, he died on the 3rd of the month Dios, having condemned much of his own folly. He was then baptized in Antioch by Euzoius the Arian, in the universal year of the world 5852, and of the 11th period 532, at the beginning of the 12th. Then, therefore, Julian, having become sole ruler, shamelessly practiced Hellenism, washing away his holy baptism with the blood of sacrifices and doing all things by which the demons are served. Year of the world 5853. Year of the divine incarnation 353. Emperor of the Romans Julian, 3 years. 1. King of the Persians Sapor, 70 years. 59. Bishop of Rome Damasus, 28 years. 9. Bishop of Constantinople Eudoxius, 10 years. 2. Bishop of Jerusalem Hilarius, 12 years. 7. Bishop of Alexandria Athanasius, 46 years. 35. Bishop of Antioch Leontius, 8 years. 3. In this year Julian the transgressor became emperor, ruling alone on account of the multitude of our sins. For, puffed up by the victory over the barbarians, he turned the power to himself and put on the diadem 47 before the death of Constantius, shamelessly turning to Hellenism. For which Constantius, greatly repenting, gave up the ghost, both for the murder of his family and for the innovation in the faith and for the proclamation of the apostate. And when Julian the apostate ruled alone by divine judgments, all manner of divine wraths seized the land of the Romans. Wishing to show Constantius to be unjust and inhuman, the lawless one, feigning justice, recalled the bishops in exile, but Eusebius, the first of the royal eunuchs, he put to death as being supposedly unjust. And he expelled the other eunuchs of the palace because of having lost his wife, his own sister, whom Constantius had joined to him; likewise also cooks on account of the frugality of his diet, and barbers because one was sufficient for many, as he said. And from the public post he cast out the camels and donkeys, oxen and mules, allowing only horses to serve, on account of the great avarice of which he was a slave, as by the
