examine, and test yourselves. Therefore, let each one take account to himself day by day of his actions by day and by night; and, if he has sinned, let him cease; but if he has not sinned, let him not boast; but let him persevere in what is good, and not be negligent, nor condemn his neighbor, nor justify himself, as the blessed apostle Paul said, until the Lord comes, who searches the hidden things. For often we ourselves are unaware of what we are doing; and we indeed do not know, but the Lord comprehends all things. Therefore, giving the judgment to Him, let us have compassion on one another, and let us bear one another's burdens, but let us examine ourselves, and let us hasten to fulfill what we lack. And let this also be an observance for security against sinning: Let each of us note and write down our actions and the movements of our soul, as if we were going to report them to one another; and be sure that, being completely ashamed to be known, we will cease from sinning, and from even thinking anything wicked. For who that is sinning wants to be seen? or who that has sinned does not rather lie, wishing to remain unnoticed? Just as, therefore, when we see one another, we would not fornicate, so, if we write down our thoughts as if reporting them to one another, we will all the more guard ourselves from foul thoughts, being ashamed to be known. Let the writing therefore be for us in place of the eyes of our fellow ascetics; so that, blushing to write as if being seen, we may not even think wicked things; and thus 26.925 shaping ourselves, we will be able to bring the body into subjection, and to please the Lord, and to trample on the schemes of the enemy. These things he commanded to those who came to him; but for those who were suffering he suffered with them and prayed with them; and often and in many things the Lord heard him; and neither did he boast when he was heard, nor did he grumble when he was not heard; but he himself always gave thanks to the Lord, and he exhorted those who were suffering to be patient, and to know that healing belongs neither to him, nor to men at all, but only to God who acts when He wishes and for whom He wills. Therefore those who were suffering received also the words of the old man as a cure, learning themselves not to be faint-hearted, but rather to be patient; and those who were healed were taught not to give thanks to Antony, but to God alone. One, then, named Fronto, who was from the Palatium, and had a terrible affliction, for he would eat his own tongue, and his eyes were about to be injured, having come to the mountain, he asked Antony to pray for him. And he, having prayed, said to Fronto: Depart, and you will be healed. But when he insisted, and remained inside for days, Antony persisted in saying: You will not be able to be healed by remaining here. Go out, and when you have reached Egypt, you will see the sign that has happened to you. He believed and went out; and as soon as he saw Egypt, the affliction ceased, and the man became well according to the word of Antony, which he had learned from the Savior through prayer. And a certain virgin from Busiris of Tripoli had a terrible and exceedingly shameful affliction. For her tears, and her mucus, and the fluids falling from her ears to the ground, immediately became worms; and her body was paralyzed, and her eyes were not natural. Her parents, having learned that monks were departing for Antony, and believing in the Lord who had healed the woman with the issue of blood, asked to travel with their daughter with these 26.928 men. And when they consented, the parents with the girl remained outside the mountain with Paphnutius the confessor and monk; but the others went in, and just as they wished to report about the virgin, he himself anticipated them, and related both the suffering of the girl, and how she had traveled with them.
