the tradition of the church that those who were unmarried when they joined the priestly order should no longer marry, and that those who were married should not be separated from the wives they have. And Paphnutius, although he was inexperienced in marriage, introduced these things. 1.23.5 The synod also praised his counsel and legislated nothing concerning this, but left the matter to the judgment of each, not under compulsion. But concerning the other matters, as it seemed good to it, it drew up laws, according to which it is fitting for the affairs of the church to be conducted. But it is easy for anyone who wishes to encounter these, as they are circulated by many. 1.24.1 And when the events concerning Meletius throughout Egypt were examined, the synod condemned him to reside in Lycus, having only the bare name of a bishop, and for the future to ordain neither in a city nor in a village. But that those already appointed by him should have communion and minister, but should be second in honors 1.24.2 to the clergy in each church and parish. And that they should advance to the ranks of those who have died, if they should appear worthy by the vote of the multitude, with the bishop of the church of the Alexandrians confirming the election; but that it should not be lawful for them 1.24.3 to select whomever they wished according to their own judgment. And this seemed just to the synod, taking into account the rashness and readiness for ordination of Meletius and those who thought the same things, so that even when Peter the martyr, at the time he presided over the church of the Alexandrians, was in flight because of the persecution then, he usurped the ordinations that belonged to him. 1.25.1 When these things had been thus decided by the synod, it happened that at the same time there was the festival of the twentieth anniversary of Constantine's reign. It is a custom for the Romans to hold a public festival every tenth year of the reigning emperor's rule. The emperor, therefore, thinking it was a good opportunity, then invited the synod to a banquet 1.25.2 and honored them with fitting gifts. And when they had prepared to return home, he called them all together and advised them to be of one mind concerning the faith and to maintain peace among themselves, so that for the future they might remain without faction. 1.25.3 And after speaking at length about this, he finally commanded them to pray earnestly for himself and his children and the empire, and to beseech God always. And having said such things to those who had then come to Nicaea, 1.25.4 he took his leave of them. And making clear also to those not present the things that had been accomplished in the synod, he sent letters to the churches in each city, and to the church of the Alexandrians another one besides these, urging them, having laid aside all dissension, to be of one mind concerning the faith set forth by the synod; for this was nothing other than the judgment of God, established by the Holy Spirit from the harmony of such great and so many priests, and approved after <τε> an accurate investigation and testing of all doubtful points.
