not enduring to ever call him by name, but even hating his very address, he even brought him into kinship, addressing him as "child." What is more blessed than David, who made the murderer a father, and the wolf a sheep, and filled the furnace of wrath with much dew, and changed the waves into a calm, and extinguished all the flame of anger? For those words of David, entering into the mind of this beast-like man, worked this whole change, which it is possible to see from these words. For he did not say, "Are these your words, child David?" But what? "Is this your voice, child David?" for he was henceforth warmed toward the very sound itself. And just as a father, hearing the long-absent voice of a child returning from somewhere, is stirred not only by the sight, but also by the voice itself; so also Saul, when the words of David, having entered in, cast out the enmity, then recognized the holy one, and putting away one passion, received another. For having cast out anger, he received cheerfulness and sympathy. And just as when night is present we often do not recognize a friend even when he is present, but when day comes, we know him even seeing him from afar; so also it is accustomed to happen in the case of enmity. For as long as we are disposed unpleasantly toward each other, we hear a voice differently, and we look upon a face with a corrupted judgment; but when we have put away anger, the voice that was previously hostile and inimical appears to us gracious and most sweet, and the hostile and unpleasant face, longed for and charming. 6. This also happens in winter. The gathering of clouds does not allow the beauty of the sky to appear; but even if we have an eye ten thousand times sharp, we are not able to perceive the brightness above. But when the heat of the sunbeam, having lingered and broken through the cloud, reveals the sun, it also shows the beauty of the sky again. So also it happens with us when we are angry; and just like a thickened cloud standing before the eyes and before the ears, enmity makes both voices and faces appear different. But when someone, having acted philosophically, puts away enmity and breaks through the cloud of grief, then with an unbribed reason he will both see all things, and 54.703 hear; which is indeed what this Saul suffered. For when the cloud of enmity was broken through, he recognized the voice of David, and says: "Is this your voice, child David?" Which "this"? The one that brought down Goliath, and snatched the city from dangers, and brought back all who were in peril of slavery and of death to safety and to freedom again, the one that calmed his madness, having done him many and great good things. For this voice brought down that barbarian; for before the stone, the power of prayer subdued him. For he did not simply throw the stone, but first having said, "You come to me with your gods; but I come to you in the name of the Lord of Sabaoth, whom you have reproached today," so he let it fly. And this voice guided the stone, this put agony into the barbarian, this cut off the audacity of the enemy. And why do you wonder, if the voice of a righteous man calms anger, and takes down enemies, when it even drives out demons? For the apostles only spoke, and all the opposing powers fled. The voice of the saints has often stopped even the elements, and changed their operations. For Jesus the son of Nave only said, "Let the sun and the moon stand still," and they stood still; so also Moses bound the sea, and released it; so the three children extinguished the working of the fire through those hymns and through their voice. Καὶ καθάπερ νυκτὸς μὲν παρούσης οὐδὲ παρόντα πολλάκις ἐπιγινώσκομεν φίλον, ἡμέρας δὲ γενομένης, καὶ πόῤῥωθεν ὁρῶντες αὐτὸν γνωρίζομεν· οὕτω καὶ ἐπὶ τῆς ἔχθρας συμβαίνειν εἴωθεν. Ἐπειδὰν δ' ἡ τῆς ἀκτῖνος θερμότης ἐνδιατρίψασα καὶ διαῤῥήξασα τὸ νέφος, δείξῃ τὸν ἥλιον, δείκνυσι καὶ τὴν τοῦ οὐρανοῦ πάλιν εὐπρέπειαν. Οὕτω καὶ ἐφ' ἡμῶν ὀργιζομένων γίνεται· καὶ καθάπερ νέφος πεπυκνωμένον πρὸ τῶν ὀφθαλμῶν καὶ πρὸ τῶν ἀκοῶν ἑστῶσα ἡ ἔχθρα, ἑτέρας καὶ τὰς φωνὰς καὶ τὰς ὄψεις ποιεῖ φαίνεσθαι. Ἐπειδὰν δὲ φιλοσοφήσας τις τὴν ἔχθραν ἀπόθηται καὶ διαῤῥήξῃ τῆς λύπης τὸ νέφος, τότε ἀδεκάστῳ λογισμῷ καὶ ὄψεται πάντα, καὶ 54.703 ἀκούσεται· ὅπερ οὖν καὶ ὁ Σαοὺλ οὗτος ἔπαθεν. Αὕτη γὰρ ἡ φωνὴ τὸν βάρβαρον ἐκεῖνον κατήνεγκε· πρὸ γὰρ τοῦ λίθου, ἡ τῆς εὐχῆς δύναμις αὐτὸν ἐχειρώσατο. Οὐ γὰρ ἁπλῶς τὸν λίθον ἔῤῥιψεν, ἀλλὰ πρότερον εἰπὼν, Σὺ ἔρχῃ πρός με ἐν τοῖς θεοῖς σου· ἐγὼ δὲ ἔρχομαι πρὸς σὲ ἐν ὀνόματι Κυρίου Σαβαὼθ, ὃν ὠνείδισας σήμερον, οὕτως ἀφῆκε. Καὶ αὕτη τὸν λίθον ἐχειραγώγησεν ἡ φωνὴ, αὕτη τὴν ἀγωνίαν ἐνέβαλε τῷ βαρβάρῳ, αὕτη τὸ θράσος ἐξέκοψε τοῦ πολεμίου. Καὶ τί θαυμάζεις, εἰ θυμὸν καταστέλλει φωνὴ δικαίου, καὶ πολεμίους καθαιρεῖ, ὅπου γε καὶ δαίμονας ἀπελαύνει; Ἐφθέγγοντο γοῦν μόνον οἱ ἀπόστολοι, καὶ πᾶσαι ἐδραπέτευον αἱ ἀντικείμεναι δυνάμεις. Ἡ φωνὴ τῶν ἁγίων καὶ τὰ στοιχεῖα πολλάκις ἔστησε, καὶ τὰς ἐνεργείας αὐτῶν μετέβαλεν.
