he says. And for the rest, you will continue without fear. 5, 2224 you shall laugh at the unjust and lawless, and from wild beasts you shall not be afraid; for wild beasts will be at peace with you. Then you shall know that your house will be at peace, and the habitation of your tent shall not fail. Having known, he says, the power of piety and of refuge in God, you will laugh broadly at the unjust, and you will not fear beast-like men. For they too, being ashamed of your reverence for God, will no longer choose to make war on you. And then you will learn by experience that your house will be at peace, and your whole conduct of life will not fail, instead of: it will not be outside of good hopes. 64 5, 25 And you shall know that your seed will be numerous, and your children like all the plants of the field. But you will also have many children and be the father of beautiful children; for your children will be like all the plants of the field, instead of: like a field flourishing with all kinds of plants. 5, 26 And you shall go to the grave like ripe grain harvested in its season, or like a heap of the threshing floor gathered in its time. But also full of days, like grain that is full and fit for cutting, having been nourished into a good old age you will end your life, or like a heap of the threshing floor gathered in season into the storehouses. But observe that having many children and many years were considered particular to the happiness of the ancients. And he said a heap of the threshing floor, in order to say that, abounding in all good things, you will depart this life. 5, 27 Behold, these things we have so traced out, these are the things we have heard; but you, know for yourself if you have done anything. Therefore, we have accurately considered that these things are so, but you, consider for what transgressions you are paying the penalty and enduring these things. 65 CHAPTER FIVE Beginning of the saying: Then Job answered and said: For if one weighing would weigh my wrath, and lift my pains in a balance together, they would indeed be heavier than the sand of the sea. Preface to the chapter Since Eliphaz advised the just man to look to repentance as one being punished for sin, his counsel ended up being ineffective for him. For he was not able to persuade him, that he was a sinner who was conscious of no wrong in himself, so that the just man turned to contradiction; and he defends himself, indeed, for the things about which he speaks at all, and does not show his endurance by silence, but by demonstrating the reasonableness of his words through natural examples. And he calls God holy, and says that in him he had hope, and he makes public the hidden cause of his despondency, saying that he feared that God had completely abandoned him. Then he also enumerates his own misfortunes and advises not to trust in wealth and power; and he blames his friends for making his troubles more burdensome through their words; and he advises them to be afraid, looking at what happens to their neighbors. And he teaches all men a most beautiful lesson, that the life of man on earth is a trial. And again he dramatizes his own misfortunes and begs God to remember and visit him. And again he defends his own words and puts forth human nothingness in supplication, and asks God to grant him amnesty, if indeed he has transgressed in anything. When Eliphaz had said: For if you have admonished many, and have comforted the hands of the weak, and have raised up the feeble with words, and have put courage into failing knees; but now trouble has come upon you, and it has touched you, and you were troubled and having accused him as unphilosophical and unable to comfort himself, showing his calamity to be inconsolable, 'Would that,' he says, 'it were possible for the wrath brought upon me from God and the trial and the pains both of the soul and of the body to be weighed together, so that it might become clear that the things which possess me and cause me to despair are heavier than the very sand of the sea.' 67 6, 34 But as it seems, my words are worthless. For the arrows of the Lord are in my body, whose wrath drinks
