having cast a unanimous vote. But when he resisted, and held the leadership of the Church, having informed Aurelian, who was then reigning, of Paul's insolence, they persuaded him to expel him from the Church. For, being enslaved to the worship of idols, he considered it just that the one who contradicted the vote of his co-religionists should be cut off from their company. IX. -Concerning Sabellius. Sabellius the Libyan from Pentapolis began such a heresy. He said that the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit are one hypostasis, and one person with three names, and he calls the same one, sometimes Father, sometimes Son, sometimes Holy Spirit; and that in the Old [Testament] He gave the law as Father, but in the New He became incarnate as Son; and as Holy Spirit He descended upon the apostles. Dionysius, the bishop of the Alexandrians, wrote against this man. X. -Concerning Marcellus. Marcellus the Galatian, in a similar way to this man, 83.397 denied the trinity of hypostases. He said that a certain extension of the Father's divinity came into Christ, and this he called God the Word; and that after the entire economy, it was again drawn back and contracted to God, from whom it had been extended. He says that the all-holy Spirit is a further extension of the extension, and that this was given to the apostles. And in short, he supposed a Trinity extending and contracting according to different economies. XI. Concerning Photinus. But Photinus spoke of one energy of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, preaching under other names the thought of Sabellius's doctrines. Against these four the divine Diodore, who governed the metropolis of the Cilicians, wrote, proving Christ to be the pre-eternal God, who in the last days became incarnate, and worked out the salvation of mankind. All these heresies the destroyer of men has devised for the abolition of the divinity of the Only-Begotten; but He who rebukes the abyss and dries it up has extinguished them all, He who says to the abyss: "You shall be desolate, and I will dry up your rivers." For not even a small remnant of these has remained; not of Cerinthians, nor Ebionites, nor Theodotians, nor Elkesaites, nor Melchizedekians, nor Sabellians, nor Paulianists, nor Marcellians, nor Photinians; but all at once were handed over to the gloom of oblivion, and not even their names are known to the many. For the word of our Savior is true, that "Every plant which my heavenly Father has not planted will be rooted up." But the divine doctrines of the Gospels have flourished, and the branches of the apostles have extended to the sea, and the offshoots have filled the world, and the whole earth was filled with the knowledge of the Lord, as much water covers the seas, and the testimony of the events showed the truth of the prophecy.
