he will reward you in the open. See the excess of honor; when you beseech me, he says, let no one see; but when I honor you, I bring the whole world as a witness of the good deed. Let us be persuaded, therefore, and not pray for show, nor against our enemies, and let us not teach him the manner of his help. For if we only tell our affairs to the men who advocate and speak before the external judges, but leave the manner of the alliance to them, however they may wish to dispose of our affairs, much more must we do this with God. Have you told him your case, have you told what you have suffered? no longer say also how to help; for he 49.305 knows exactly what is expedient for you. But there are many who recite countless lines for the sake of prayer, saying: Lord, give me health of body, double my possessions, defend me from my enemy; which is filled with much unreasonableness. Therefore, one must leave all these things and supplicate and beseech only according to the tax collector who says: O God, be merciful to me, the sinner; and he knows then how to help you; For seek, he says, first the kingdom of God, and all these things will be added to you. Thus therefore, beloved, let us be wise with toil and humility, beating our breasts, just as he did, and we shall obtain what we ask; but if we pray filled with wrath and anger, we are found abominable and hateful before God. Let us therefore crush our minds, and humble our souls, and pray both for ourselves and for those who have grieved us. For if you wish to draw the judge to the aid of your soul, and to make him on your side, never appeal to him against the one who has grieved you. For such is the way of the judge; he especially approves and grants the requests to those who pray for their enemies, those who do not bear grudges, those who do not exult over their enemies. And as much as they do this, so much does God proceed against those others, unless they change to repentance. 5. See therefore, brothers, when some dishonor is brought upon us by someone, let us not immediately be vexed and disheartened, but let us give thanks, being wise, and awaiting the help of the Lord. For was not God able to give us good things before we asked? to grant us a life without pain, and separated from all affliction? But he does both from affection. For why does he permit us to be afflicted, and not bring a swift deliverance? Why? So that we may attend to him, holding on to his help, and flee to him, and constantly call upon him for our aid. For this reason therefore there are pains of the body, for this reason failures of crops, for this reason famines, so that from these afflictions we may always depend on him, and thus through temporal afflictions we may inherit eternal life. So therefore we ought also to give thanks for these things to God, who through many methods heals and saves our souls. For men, if they happen to do us good at some time, and then we unintentionally grieve them a little, they immediately reproach us, bringing up the good deed, so that many 49.306 curse themselves that they were ever benefited by them at all; but God is not so, but after his good deeds, being despised and insulted, he still even defends himself, and gives an account to those who insult him, saying thus: My people, what have I done to you? They did not wish to call him God, and he did not cease to name them his people; they renounced his lordship, but he did not deny them, but made them his own, and drew them to himself, saying: My people, what have I done to you? Have I become burdensome to you, he says, or heavy and oppressive? But you cannot even say this; for even if this were so, not even then should you have leaped away. For who

Καὶ ὅσον οὗτοι ποιοῦσι τοῦτο, τοσοῦτον ἐκείνοις ὁ Θεὸς ἐπεξέρχεται, ἐὰν μὴ μεταβληθῶσιν εἰς μετάνοιαν. εʹ. Βλέπετε οὖν, ἀδελφοὶ, ὅταν τις ἀτιμία ἡμῖν ἐπενεχθῇ παρά τινος, μὴ εὐθέως δυσχεράνωμεν καὶ ἀθυμῶμεν, ἀλλ' εὐχαριστῶμεν φιλοσοφοῦντες, καὶ ἀναμένοντες τὴν βοήθειαν τοῦ Κυρίου. Μὴ γὰρ οὐκ ἠδύνατο ὁ Θεὸς πρὸ τῆς αἰτήσεως διδόναι ἡμῖν τὰ ἀγαθά; μὴ βίον ἡμῖν ἀνώδυνον χαρίσασθαι, καὶ πάσης θλίψεως κεχωρισμένον; Ἀλλὰ ἀμφότερα ἀπὸ φίλτρου ποιεῖ. Τί γὰρ παραχωρεῖ θλιβῆναι ἡμᾶς, καὶ οὐκ ἐπάγει ταχέως ἀπαλλαγήν; ∆ιὰ τί; Ἵνα αὐτῷ προσεδρεύωμεν ἀντεχόμενοι τῆς παρ' αὐτοῦ βοηθείας, καὶ αὐτῷ προσφεύγωμεν, καὶ συνεχῶς αὐτὸν καλῶμεν εἰς ἀντίληψιν ἡμῶν. ∆ιὰ τοῦτο οὖν ἀλγηδόνες σώματος, διὰ τοῦτο ἀφορίαι καρπῶν, διὰ τοῦτο λιμοὶ, ἵνα ἀπὸ τῶν θλίψεων τούτων πάντοτε πρὸς αὐτὸν ἐκκρεμώμεθα, καὶ οὕτω διὰ τῶν προσκαίρων θλίψεων τὴν αἰώνιον ζωὴν κληρονομήσωμεν.
