he sends men to take him from there. But when those who were sent did not return, but remained and prophesied, he himself went. David comes to Jonathan; he tells him that Saul is seeking to kill him. And if you wish to learn more clearly tomorrow, I will be absent at the time of the meal. Then if your father asks the reason, say that because there was a sacrifice in the city, he asked to go away. If, therefore, he takes it calmly, I suspect nothing terrible; but if he is displeased, the judgment and plot against me is manifest. Jonathan does these things; but Saul was so angered that he even tried to kill his son. But he, leaping up from the table, went out into the field and shoots the arrows; for this too was 56.344 a signal; and running up behind his boy, with David hiding somewhere there, he says: Go with haste, and do not stand still, because the arrow is there beyond you. David understood what these words meant, and when the boy had departed, he falls upon Jonathan and weeps; but he commands him to flee and to remember their covenants. And these were, never to take away mercy from the house of Jonathan, neither while he lived, nor when he was dead. David comes to the priest Ahimelech. Then he ate the loaves of the presence; and he took the sword of Goliath, saying that he had been sent somewhere in haste by the king. And he comes from there to Achish, then to Odollam, and he entrusts his household to the king of Moab. But when Saul was vexed with his servants, because no one sympathized with him, nor delivered David to him, Doeg the Edomite (for he happened to be there then, when David came to the priest), reported to him what had happened. But he, having summoned the priests, and when those standing by were unwilling to kill them, commands Doeg. And he killed three hundred and fifty men wearing an ephod, and destroyed Nob, their city. One of the priest's sons who had escaped reports these things to David. But he, being grieved, kept the survivor with him, and saved Keilah when it was being warred against. And having heard that Saul was coming against him, he went out from there into the wilderness of Ziph. And when Saul heard, he comes against him. But when an attack of enemies was reported while he was pursuing him, he departs. Then, having returned from the enemies, he sought him again, and enters the cave where David was sitting, and with him men further inside. And when all were urging him to kill Saul, he was not persuaded, nor did he permit those who wished to. And when that one went out of the cave, this one also followed, and crying out to him, he taught Saul both of that one's wickedness and his own righteousness. But he wept. Then Samuel died. He sends, asking Nabal for gifts, in return for the protection with which he guarded his flocks. But he not only did not give, but also insulted him through the messengers. And having armed himself, he went up so as to destroy him. Abigail, his wife, learned these things, and taking gifts she met David, and having beseeched him much, she restrained him from his impulse. And when Nabal died, she becomes his wife. Saul, having heard where David was, comes against him again. And when he was asleep with the whole army, David stands over him with Abishai; and when that one commanded him to strike the enemy, he did not yield, but taking the jug and spear lying at his head, he went as far away as possible, and crying out he both roused his general, and accused him of negligence, because he was not guarding the king. He shows both the spear and the jug, and accuses Saul, because he persecutes one who has done no wrong. Then David flees to Achish; for he did not consider it to be safe to stay near Saul. David receives Ziklag from Achish; and he would attack the enemies, and take money and many sheep. Then the foreigners are gathered together against Israel, and Saul consults the ventriloquist. David, having turned back from the camp (for the satraps of the foreign 56.345 peoples did not allow him to go out with them, suspecting that he would betray the camp), finds the
