most unholy of men; give whatever sentence you wish against me, and whatever Satan who dwells in your soul puts into you; for I oppose your will, and I do not submit to your commands. Therefore do what you wish, most lawless one. 64. When the transgressor and one estranged from God, Julian, heard these things from the martyr, he pronounced this sentence against him: Artemius, who has insulted the gods, and has trampled on both the Roman and our laws, and has confessed himself a Christian instead of a Roman and a Greek, and instead of a dux and an augustalis has named himself a Galilean, we have delivered to the final sentence of death, commanding his defiled head to be cut off with a sword. Therefore, when the martyr of Christ received this sentence, he came forth from the tribunal with the soldiers who were leading him away, rejoicing and exulting, praising and glorifying Christ the King. And having reached the place where the soldier and martyr of Christ was about to receive his consummation, he said to the soldiers who were leading him away: Brothers, I beseech you, allow me a little time to pray; and they said to him: Do as is pleasing to you. And the saint, turning toward the east and spreading his hands to heaven, prayed thus: 65. I thank you, Master, Savior of those who in truth call upon your name, because you have strengthened me, your unworthy servant, to trample on the goads of the devil, and to shatter his snares which he placed under my feet, and to put to shame the apostate Julian who has leaped away from your lordship, and has clung to the devil and to those who hate you; the one who has trampled on your holy laws, and has profaned your divine commands; I thank you, lover of mankind, because you have looked upon my lowliness, and have not shut me up in the hands of enemies, but have set my feet in a broad place, and have directed my steps. I thank you, only-begotten Word of the Father, because you have deemed me worthy of the prize of the upward calling, and of the choir of your saints, and have perfected me in my confession of you, and have put to shame those who rise up against me; and now I call upon you, Master, look upon me and upon my humble words, and give refreshment to your inheritance, for it has grown weak and you have not restored it. For behold, your enemies have made a noise, and those who hate you have lifted up their heads. Against your people they have devised a crafty plan, and have taken counsel against your saints. For they have said: Come and let us destroy them, and let the name of Christ be remembered no more. These things Julian boasts; in these things he is insolent; these things he threatens to your people and to your inheritance for which you shed your blood. For behold, your altars have been torn down, and your sanctuary has been burned, and the beauty of your house has vanished, and the blood of your covenant has been counted as nothing, because of our sins, and the blasphemies which Arius poured out against you, the Only-Begotten, and your Holy Spirit, alienating you from the consubstantiality of the Father and estranging you from His nature, calling you a creature, you who are the creator of all creation, and 96.1313 placing under time the one who created the ages; saying thus: There was a time when the Son was not; calling you a Son of will and volition, the most lawless one. But that impious one indeed found the rewards for his own mouth and his unjust tongue, even if his blasphemies remain, bearing fruit for him of eternal and unending punishment. But you, long-suffering one, stop the tyranny against us, and quench your just anger and the wrath which we have kindled, in provoking you, Lord; shatter the strongholds of idolatry; extinguish the altars of the idols, and the stench of the unclean
