works of virtue. Therefore the wicked hated such men. 295 Jo 15, So that they might not hear with despair of the hatred that would come upon them from men, He prepares them by His own example to bear this lightly, seeing that they behaved this way even toward the master. 296 Jo 15, If you remember that they hated me without cause and persecuted the lord who endured these things for his servants, you, the servants, when you suffer the same things for the master, do not have to bear it heavily, if you suffer the same things as I. 297 Jo 15, 21 For they did not persecute the disciples for any other reason than only that they proclaimed the name of Christ, as they did not know the Father either. 298 Jo 15, 22 They disobeyed Him not because of the speaker, but because of their own choice. Therefore they are without excuse. 299 Jo 15, 23 For he who hates the son, no less also hates his father. 300 Jo 15, 23-25 For his divine signs, having surpassed all the signs that came through the prophets, rendered them without excuse on the day of judgment for not obeying him, but also through the ways they hated him, they also hate his Father. 301 Jo 15, 25 Through the evil they did, the prophetic word was fulfilled. 302 Jo 15, 26-27 "So that you may be able," He says, "to endure the contest of patience, the Paraclete comes to assist you, and so that, by cooperating with you in the evangelical word, he may become a witness of my divinity; and not only he, but you also who see me risen from the dead in truth, believing those things of which you have had experience. And by what He says, He teaches that the Spirit proceeds from the substance of the Father through the Son, being sent down to men.
303 Jo 16, 1 He foreteaches them the difficult things, so that through prayer they might arm themselves
to escape the difficulties and to show that all the words He foretold are true. 305 Jo 16, 2 He proclaims beforehand the steadfastness of their faith, that they were to strive for piety even unto blood, so that even their persecutors would fall into such irrational zeal as to think that the killing of the disciples was pleasing to God, as if by this the murderers were serving God. 307 Jo 16, 3 These things happen because of the ignorance of the unbelievers, which they willingly hastened to, not accepting the knowledge of the truth. 308 Jo 16, 4 By the prediction He makes them bolder, yet at the very height of the events He commands them to remember His words, so that they might receive some comfort by calling to mind the good promises. 309 col1 Jo 16, 4-5 Moreover, it seemed untimely, long before the economy of the passion, while He was still with them and spending time with them, to foretell such things from the beginning and to obscure the teaching concerning piety, by which their soul was to be strengthened, with the teaching of the things foretold. It was not opportune long ago to impart to you the virtue of piety, lest you be destroyed by time, and because being with you I delivered it by deeds; but now, since I am going away, it is necessary to speak. And when before this I said that I am going away, you asked me, "Where are you going?", but now having heard what is about to befall you, out of fear and sorrow you ask me nothing about this. 310 Jo 16, 7 Since men still did not know the substance of the Son, but the Holy Spirit, when it came, taught that the substance of the Trinity is one, He said that the presence of the Spirit is expedient; for the Son, as the disciples were still imperfect, did not announce to them all that they needed to learn. 311 col1 Jo 16, 8-11 For when He came to overthrow the sin that possessed the world and provided propitiation for all who gladly received His presence, those who remained in unbelief had their sin as something indelible and as if sealed. For when the Holy Spirit came to blot out the sins of the faithful, whoever did not receive it remained having their sin unforgivable and as if sealed
