SPURIOUS EPISTLES
TO IGNATIUS, MARY OF CASSOBOLA.
Mary, a proselyte of Jesus Christ, to Ignatius Theophorus, most blessed bishop of the apostolic church which is in Antioch, beloved in God the Father and in Jesus, greeting and health. We always pray for you, for your joy and health in Him. Since, O wonderful man, Christ has been made known to us also as the Son of the living God, and that in the last times He became incarnate through Mary the virgin, of the seed of David and Abraham, according to the words which He Himself proclaimed beforehand concerning Himself by the choir of the prophets, for this reason we entreat and beseech that there be sent to us by your wisdom Maris our companion, the bishop of our native Neapolis which is by Zarbus, and Eulogius the presbyter of Cassobola, that we may not be destitute of those who preside over the divine word, as somewhere also Moses says: Let the Lord God look out for a man who shall lead this people, and the congregation of the Lord shall not be as sheep which have no shepherd
. But as to the youth of those forementioned, fear nothing, O blessed one. For I would have you know that they themselves in themselves despise the flesh and disregard its passions, shining forth with a priestly hoariness in their recent youth. But stir up your mind through the Spirit given to you by God through Christ, and you will know that Samuel, being a little child, was called "the Seer," and being numbered in the choir of the prophets he rebukes the old man Eli for transgression, because he had preferred his frenzied sons to God the cause of all things, and allowed them to go unpunished while making a sport of the priesthood and acting licentiously toward the people. And Daniel the wise, being a youth, judged certain savage old men, showing them to be reprobates and not elders, and though being Jews by race, to be Canaanites in manner. And Jeremiah, because of his youth refusing the prophecy entrusted to him by God, hears: Say not, "I am a youth," for you shall go to all to whom I shall send you, and whatsoever I command you, you shall speak, for I am with you. And Solomon the wise, being twelve years old, understood the great question of the ignorance of the women concerning their own children, so that all the people were astonished at the great wisdom of the child, and feared him not as a youth, but as a perfect man. And the riddles of the queen of the Ethiopians, having a course like the streams of the Nile, he so solved that she who was so wise was beside herself. And Josiah the beloved of God, while still almost speaking indistinctly, convicts those who were possessed by the evil spirit, showing them to be false speakers and deceivers of the people; and he reveals the deceit of demons and makes an example of those who are not gods, and slaughters with impunity those consecrated to them, and overturns their altars and pollutes their sanctuaries with dead remains, and pulls down their temples and cuts down their groves and breaks their pillars in pieces, and digs up the graves of the wicked, so that not even a trace of the wicked might still exist; so zealous was he for piety, and a punisher of the impious, while yet lisping with his tongue. And David, at once a prophet and a king, the root of the Saviour according to the flesh, is anointed as king by Samuel while a youth; for he himself somewhere says, that I was small among my brethren, and youngest in my father's house. And time would fail me, if I wished to trace out all who in youth have pleased God, and were entrusted by God with prophecy and priesthood and kingship. but for the sake of reminder
