Ziklag burnt, and the women nowhere; for they had been taken captive. And inquiring of God if he should pursue, and being told that he should, he pursued. And learning from an Egyptian boy where they were encamped, falling upon them unawares, he struck them, and took the spoils, and divided them equally between those who had fought and those who had remained with the baggage. And when the war of the Philistines against Israel happened, Saul and Jonathan fell, and his other two sons; and the enemies, taking him, fastened him to the wall of Beth-shan, which is Scythopolis. And the men of Jabesh came and took him and Jonathan, and buried them.

2 Kings. A certain man comes announcing to David that he himself had killed Saul; and David killed him; and he mourned for Saul and Jonathan, and they anoint him as king. And he sends to the men of Jabesh-gilead, praising them because they buried Saul. And Abner the general of Saul made Mephibosheth, son of Saul, king of Israel. But David reigned over Judah. And when Joab, David's man, and Abner, Saul's man, met each other, and a war was stirred up from a game, Asahel, Joab's brother, pursued Abner; and though he often commanded him to turn aside, he did not consent. Then Abner kills him, and calling Joab, advises him to stop the war. And there was war between the house of Saul and the house of David; and the one grew weak, while the other grew strong. Abner takes the concubine of Saul; Mephibosheth accused him. Angered, Abner sends to David, promising to deliver all the people to him. And when he came to him, David feasted him. And when Joab heard, having returned from the war, he sent for Abner and treacherously murdered him, avenging his brother's blood. When David learned of it, he curses Joab, and mourns for Abner, and buries him with great honor. Richan and Baneas, having secretly killed Mephibosheth, came to David, as though they had done well by the murder. But he killed them. Then David becomes king of all the people, and comes to Jerusalem against the Jebusite, and the lame prevent him from entering, and he takes the stronghold, and built a house for himself. And Hiram, the king of Tyre, also helped him. The Philistines rose up, and David went out and cut them down. And when they attacked again, he is prevented by God from going up to meet them. But "When you hear," says God, "the sound of the shaking of the weeping, then fight." For then they are delivered to you. David brings up the ark, and Uzzah dies, because he stretched out his hand to the ark. And as the ark was being brought up, David danced, and Michal despised him. Then David, wanting to build a temple, 56.346 is prevented by Nathan the prophet, and he prays giving thanks to God, giving thanks for the promises he heard. David struck the Philistines and Moab and the Syrians, and the golden weapons which he took, he brought to Jerusalem, which later Shishak king of Egypt took. And David dedicated many offerings. He deems Mephibosheth the son of Jonathan worthy of the royal table, and gives him all of Saul's things. And he commands Ziba, who was his paternal servant, to serve Mephibosheth with his children. And he also sends to the king of the sons of Ammon to offer comfort, since his father had died. But he, persuaded by his princes, dishonors those sent by David for comfort. From this a war arises; and first he sent Joab, then David himself came, and he turns the enemies to flight. Thence the things concerning Uriah and Bathsheba, and the child that died. After which Solomon is born. Joab wars against Rabbah, and after taking the city, he sends for David, wanting the victory to be ascribed to him. Amnon the son of David lusts after his sister Tamar, and pretending to be sick, when she came to visit, he violated her.
