cease from bloodshed; that a pure and bloodless sacrifice may be offered to you in every place of your dominion; that your all-holy name may be glorified, of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto all the ages of ages. Amen. ξϛʹ. And kneeling a third time, and prostrating himself toward the east, he prayed again, saying: God from God, Only from Only, King from King, who are in the heavens and seated at the right hand of the God and Father who begot you, who lived on earth for the salvation of us all; the crown of those who piously contend for you, hear me, your humble and unworthy servant, and receive my soul in peace, and give it rest with the saints who from eternity have been pleasing to you and have glorified your holy name, of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto all the ages of ages. Amen. And there came to him a voice from heaven, saying: Artemius, your supplication has been heard, and the grace of healings has been granted to you; hasten therefore your course, and finish the contest; enter in with the saints, and receive the prize prepared for the saints, and for all who have loved the appearance of Christ. But the lawless emperor will fall in Persia, becoming a victim to the unclean demons whom he served and whom he honored, receiving such a reward from them, and another will reign in his place, most Christian and most beloved of God, shattering and pulling down all the objects of idol worship. And the people of God will rejoice, and all the Churches will be freed from the madness of idolatry, and a deep peace will overtake the whole inhabited world, and the name of Christ will be exalted and magnified from the ends 96.1316 to the ends of the inhabited world. For idolatry will no longer raise its head, nor will Satan have opportunity to subvert the foundation of the Church, for the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it. ξζʹ. Having heard these things from the divine voice, the Blessed one, and having received full assurance of the things that were to come to pass, he gave thanks to God, and being filled with joy and gladness, he bowed his neck; and one of the soldiers came forward and cut off his holy head, on the twentieth of the month of October, on the sixth day which is called Friday. Whose blessed and holy body a certain faithful woman, by name Ariste, a deaconess of the Church in Antioch, requested from the emperor Julian; and he permitted it to be given to her; and she, having made a coffin and anointed his holy and blessed body with myrrh, and having perfumed it with costly spices and ointments, placed it in the coffin, and sent it to the all-blessed city of Constantine, placing it in a notable place, as she wished to build a house worthy of the holy great-martyr Artemius, so that a synaxis might be celebrated in memory of his renowned martyrdom. These things were done in Antioch, the greatest city of Syria, under Julian Caesar, who was surnamed the Apostate, when Dulcitius was proconsul, and Salutius held the office of prefect; in the place called Daphne, while our Lord and God and Savior Jesus Christ reigns over us. ξηʹ. Since we have said above that the apostate Julian sent to Jerusalem to rebuild the temple of the Jews, which Vespasian and Titus his son, along with the city, had both destroyed and burned, just as the Lord Christ foretold concerning it to his divinely-inspired disciples, that 'there shall not be left a stone upon a stone that shall not be thrown down.' The lawless one, therefore, wishing to prove the words of Christ false, was especially eager to build the temple, having commanded from the
