trusting." The Moabite, who has no face to enter the house of God, trusts in the glory of this age. -After the history, understand that he neglected to cut off his youthful impulses. 93.708 "He has not been poured from vessel to vessel." In the historical sense, he says, he was never settled elsewhere, nor did he lose any of his own. But in the spiritual sense, he says vessel here means the cup. There is a cup of wrath, and a cup of salvation; he did not therefore turn, he says, the cup of wrath into that of salvation, instead of, he did not appease the divine wrath. "And therefore his taste has remained." The bitter taste of sin; and he calls his scent the death-bearing. "And therefore, behold, the days." He remained in his way, and he speaks of those who take him captive. "His horns." His glory. "From Bethel." In which Jeroboam set up the calves. The word has a reference against diabolical evil. "How will you say: We are strong?" Because he boasted against God, and he wars against the Israelites, who did him no wrong, that is, us. "Staff." The glorious kingdom. "Rod of magnificence." The strength of his greatness. "Sitting in Arar." In decay, in rottenness. "And upon the house." He means their royal city. -This is said to be what is now called Daphne. "The horn of Moab was broken." Instead of, both his glory and his strength; for hand means action. "Make him drunk." In his strength he shall be broken. "And indeed he was for a laughingstock." Because you also mocked Israel, as being punished not for sins, but through the weakness of their God. "And in your thefts." Stealing, he says, you found your things, because you warred against Israel. For this will also fit against demons, who, having been wronged in nothing beforehand, wage war against us for free. "At the mouth of a pit." In the form of a ravine. - He still threatens against the Moabite land, as having insulted God Himself by saying: God is not strong enough to save Israel. "Is it not enough?" Did he not act thus, or thus, expecting that it is a retribution? did he not bring all his power to the insult against me? "Cry out upon the men shorn for drought." Upon the adorned men of the Moabite land; for the land is parched. Or thus, upon those who ought to be parched and to mourn for their sins; but who are shorn and live luxuriously through contempt. "As with the weeping of Jazer I will weep." As I did to Jazer, he says, so also will I do to Sebamah. And he mentioned vines, because the enemies were ravaging the fruits. 93.709 "Your branches have passed over the sea." They were shut in by the multitude of the enemies. "The city of Jazer." The same manner that befell Jazer, has also befallen you. "It has been cut short." It was cut short, he says, the joy of the Moabite land. For just as they perhaps began to rejoice, the wrath came upon them. "And there was wine." But not even wine, he says, dripping from the grape placed in the winepress, had time to be trodden; for just as they began to tread, the report of the enemies cut them off. "In the morning they did not tread." Instead of, they will be dried up; and he speaks of a God-sent wrath. "Therefore the heart of Moab, like flutes." The flute cries out by the force of the breath of another blowing. Therefore, being forced by the enemies, they will cry out, and I, being pressed by their own insolence, will cry out upon them. "How has he changed?" Instead of, how has he been reversed? "Behold, as an eagle." He likened Nebuchadnezzar to an eagle, and Ezekiel also, because of the vehemence of the attack, and the inescapability of the danger, with the strongholds contributing nothing to this, but all resolution being dissolved with the greatest fear, like a woman about to give birth. CHAPTER 49. "To the sons of Ammon." To the Ammonites, being from Ammon. "Or one who will receive." One who will receive, instead of, an heir, he says. Is there not among the sons of Israel one who ought to inherit the cities of the tribe of Gilead, that the Ammonites have taken them? "Why has Melchol taken possession?" Melchol is both an idol, and a king of the Ammonites so called. Rabbath, a city of the Ammonites. "Gird yourselves with sackcloths." He exhorts the cities of the Ammonites to bewail one another's misfortunes. "Why do you exult?"
