He punished him thus as an example and a terror to many: as his limbs were being dissolved by the disease of putrefaction, cast out in the public square, he expired in the sight of all. But among these, Valentinian was distinguished by his confession of Christ, at that time a tribune of a cohort, of the numerus called the Cornuti, not only despising his rank, but also being subjected to exile, who after these things was appointed emperor by God; likewise Jovian also loosed his belt, crying out: I am a Christian; whom the people, loving him as he was camp-prefect, begged the emperor not to harm him; who also was proclaimed emperor after Julian. And Artemius, the dux of the diocese of Egypt, because under Constantius he had shown much zeal against the idols in Alexandria, was beheaded and his property confiscated. And in Dorostolum of Thrace, Aemilianus, a soldier, also suffered martyrdom, delivered to the fire by Capitolinus; and many others in various places and ways were distinguished in their confession of Christ. But a certain Thalassius, notorious for his licentiousness and profligacy, who was also a procurer for his own daughter for shameful deeds, was honored by the emperor as an inspector of entrails, living in Antioch near the palace. When his house collapsed on him, he alone perished with one eunuch, with whom he was also found entangled. But all who were found with him were saved, his own household being Christians, both his wife and those with her. And a child of about seven years who was found there and saved, when asked how he was saved, said that he was carried by an angel. But the infamous Julian, for the overthrow of the divine decree, ordered the temple of the Jews to be rebuilt, having appointed a certain Alypius, a Greek zealous against Christ, to be in charge of the work. But when he had dug down to the unseen parts of the foundations, 52 because of the excavation a most violent wind blowing with a tempest destroyed the prepared lime, which was 20 myriad modii; and when the Jews persisted in the undertaking of the work, fire came out and consumed them, and so they ceased from their audacity. And Julian the impious wrote a refutation of the divine gospels, which the great Cyril of Alexandria brilliantly refuted in an exceptional treatise. And Porphyry, who raged against us, was a Tyrian by birth, and the wretch was formerly a Christian; but having been beaten by Christians in Caesarea of Palestine, in anger he went over to Hellenism, and then the dog dared to write against the truth. At this time the divine cross appeared in the sky, luminous, encircled by a crown of light, from Golgotha to the holy Mount of Olives, much brighter than in the time of Constantius; and spontaneously on the coverings of the altars and books and other cloths of the churches and on the garments not only of Christians, but also of Jews, the sign of the cross appeared, not only in Jerusalem, but also in Antioch and other cities; and the garments of the Jews and Greeks who shamelessly disbelieved were found filled with crosses; and on some they were even black. Julian sent many men to various places for both divinations and oracles, so that he might seem to be undertaking the war against the Persians with the approval of the demons. And when many oracles from various places were brought to him, I shall mention one. It runs thus: Now we all, the gods, have rushed to bring trophies of victory by the beastly river, and of them I, impetuous, war-rousing Ares, am the leader. Confirmed by these things, he armed himself for the war against the Persians, having fined the Christians large sums of money. And being in Antioch, on the pretext of the prices of goods, he was violently insulted by the Antiochenes. at which time he also composed the Misopogon, an Antiochene oration, supposedly in his defense; and he bitterly tortured a certain young man, Theodore, who had begun the insults against him. And having done many and great things against the Christians and having promised to do more after the Persian war, badly 53 his all-defiled

Πορφύριος δέ, ὁ καθ' ἡμῶν λυττήσας, Τύριος μὲν ἦν τῷ γένει, Χριστιανὸς δὲ τὸ πρὶν ὁ ἄθλιος· τυφθεὶς δὲ ὑπὸ Χριστιανῶν ἐν Καισαρείᾳ τῆς Παλαιστίνης κατ' ὀργὴν μετῆλθεν εἰς τὸν ἑλληνισμόν, καὶ τότε γράψαι κατὰ τῆς ἀληθείας ὁ κύων ἐτόλμησεν. ἐπὶ τούτοις ὤφθη ὁ θεῖος σταυρὸς ἐν τῷ οὐρανῷ φωτοειδὴς κυκλούμενος ὑπὸ στεφάνου φωτὸς ἀπὸ τοῦ Γολγοθᾶ ἕως τοῦ ἁγίου ὄρους τῶν ἐλαιῶν, λαμπρότερος μᾶλλον ἢ ἐπὶ Κωνσταντίου· αὐτομάτως τε τοῖς ἁπλώμασι τῶν θυσιαστηρίων καὶ βίβλοις καὶ ἄλλοις ἐσθήμασι τῶν ἐκκλησιῶν καὶ ἐν ἱματίοις οὐ μόνον Χριστιανῶν, ἀλλὰ καὶ Ἰουδαίων, ἐπεπόλαζε τὸ σημεῖον τοῦ σταυροῦ, οὐ μόνον ἐν Ἱεροσολύμοις, ἀλλὰ καὶ ἐν Ἀντιοχείᾳ καὶ ἄλλαις πόλεσιν· καὶ ὧν ἀναισχύντως ἠπίστουν Ἰουδαῖοι καὶ Ἕλληνες, εὑρίσκοντο τὰ ἱμάτια αὐτῶν πεπληρωμένα σταυρῶν· ἔν τισι δὲ καὶ ἐμελάνιζον. Ἰουλιανὸς πολλοὺς ἐν διαφόροις τόποις ἀπέστειλεν εἴς τε μαντείας καὶ χρηστήρια, ὅπως ἂν δόξῃ μετ' ἐπιτροπῆς τῶν δαιμόνων ἐπὶ Πέρσας πόλεμον ἐγχειρεῖν. καὶ πολλῶν ἐκ διαφόρων κομισθέντων αὐτῷ χρησμῶν, ἑνὸς ἐπιμνησθήσομαι. ἔχει δὲ οὕτως· νῦν πάντες ὡρμήθημεν θεοὶ νίκης τρόπαια κομίσασθαι παρὰ θηρὶ ποταμῷ, τῶν δὲ ἐγὼ ἡγεμονεύω θοῦρος πολεμόκλονος Ἄρης. τούτοις βεβαιωθεὶς πρὸς τὸν κατὰ Περσῶν ὁπλίζεται πόλεμον πολλὰ χρήματα τοὺς Χριστιανοὺς ζημιώσας. ἐν Ἀντιοχείᾳ δὲ γενόμενος προφάσει τῶν ὠνίων ὑβρίσθη σφοδρῶς παρὰ τῶν Ἀντιοχέων. ὅτε καὶ τὸν Μισοπώγωνα λόγον Ἀντιοχικὸν πρὸς ἄμυναν δῆθεν ἐπόνεσεν· Θεόδωρον δέ τινα νεανίαν προκατάρξαντα τῶν κατ' αὐτοῦ ὕβρεων πικρῶς ᾐκίσατο. πολλὰ δὲ καὶ μεγάλα κατὰ Χριστιανῶν ποιήσας καὶ πλείονα ποιεῖν μετὰ τὸν Περσικὸν πόλεμον ἐπαγγειλάμενος κακῶς 53 τὸν παμμίαρον αὐτοῦ
