it is another thing to give someone a fatal blow and to thrust in the sword. 458 {3Jο 13, 27}3 458The evangelist calls the entrance of the devil Judas’s confirming to do the things pleasing to the devil. When God made him manifest and set him apart, then the devil leaped upon him because of his immense shamelessness. 459 {3ςο 13, 27}3He says this not as commanding, but as reproaching one whom He allowed to do what he wanted, since he did not wish to be corrected. Since this has been decided by you, hasten to the plot against me; for to suffer does not grieve me. 460 {3Jο 13, 27}3The cause of Judas’s apostasy was not the morsel given to him as a blessing, but his unchangeable wickedness after the reproof. Wherefore also the enemy leaped in as into a city without gates. 461 {3Jο 13, 28}3Since perhaps John spoke to him secretly and heard, no one knew; for if they had known, they might have even killed him, or because they were in a tumult, not knowing the things in Judas's heart, they were ignorant of what was said. 462 {3Jο 13, 29}3If anyone should say, how did He who was fed by others and did not permit His disciples to carry a bag or a purse have a money box, it must be said that this was only for the sake of the poor. 463 {3Jο 13, 31}3Even if the Son does all things, yet by ascribing all that He does to the Father, He glorifies the Father. 464 {3Jο 13, 31}3Christ, having been glorified by putting death to death through His own death, teaches that to endure reproach for God's sake is glory. 465 {3Jο 13, 31}3The Father was glorified in the Son, since it became known whose Father He is. Thus also the Son is glorified as having such a one who begot Him. 466 {3Jο 13, 32}3Through Himself the Father will glorify the Son and immediately, that is on the cross, when the sun was darkened, the rocks were split, and after fifty days the Spirit, having descended, made the Son manifest to all. 467 {3Jο 13, 33}3They were seeking Him as one who loves and as a teacher. 468 {3Jο 13, 33}3He said this to the people because of their unbelief; for He was with His disciples and is with them always, and because after the resurrection they both saw Him and ate with Him. 469 {3Jο 13, 34}3The nature of this commandment is new, and to love one's neighbor more than oneself is beyond the law. I do not wish you to love those whom you are obligated to, but those to whom you owe nothing; for I also for you
am dying, to whom I owe nothing. 470 {3Jο 13, 34-35}3You will not be known as my disciples by the signs you perform, for this is entirely of grace from above, but by the fact that you love one another and have concord and give of yourselves. 471 {3Jο 13, 35}3Christ is the Son of love, who is love by nature, being love-in-itself by nature and the fruit of love, not having the good of love as something acquired. 472 {3Jο 13, 36}3Because of his weakness He forbids Peter to follow Him, but later He promises it because of his courage. Since he himself was also to be crucified like Christ, He foretells what was going to happen to him alone. 473 {3Jο 13, 37}3Peter has become a model for us to ask teachers what we do not know. 474 {3Jο 13, 37}3Peter, somewhat disbelieving what was said, inquires, and so also promises to die for Him. 475 {3Jο 13, 38}3Since you do not wish to be persuaded that it is impossible for what I say not to happen, you will know it in the denial. And he underwent this not because Christ led him to it, but because He left him destitute, so that he might not be lifted up into arrogance. 476 {3Jο 13, 38}3Let no one say that Peter denied for this reason, that Christ said it; for He did not lay a necessity upon him so that he would come to denial, but what was certainly going to be, He foretells to the disciple as God. The denial did not come from an unbelieving soul, but from weakness. 477 {3Jο 13, 38}3Not all of you, He says, are going to deny; Peter's denial will be wiped out through repentance and confession. 478 {3Jο 14, 2}3If the place where you are to be with me had not long ago been prepared for you, I would have gone and prepared a place for you. 479 {3Jο 14, 3}3It is not necessary to ascend for the sake of preparing a place for you, but that I may make a way for you to ascend, where the dwelling place of the angels is,
