of the Bythus which increases from his letters, and further, of the twelve-limbed body of Truth, composed of two letters, and of her voice, which Int. she spoke without speaking, and concerning the interpretation of the unspoken name, and concerning the soul of the world and of man, according as they have their dispensation in the image, thus he trifled. Next, we will relate how the Tetrad showed to him a power equal in number from the names, so that nothing of what has come to us said by him may escape you, beloved, as you have often requested from us. 1.8.11 Thus, then, all-wise Sige declared to him the generation of the twenty-four elements: with Monotes co-existed Henotes H. Henota, from which are two projections, as has been said before; Monad and the One, being H. l. twice two, became four H. four; for twice two is four. And again, the two and the four, being added together, revealed the number six. And these six, being quadrupled, brought forth the twenty-four forms. And the names of the first Tetrad, being understood as holy of holies, and not able to be spoken, are known H. adj. only by the Son, which the Father knows what they are. The venerable names, and those named with faith by him, are these: Arrhetos and Sige, Pater and Aletheia. The entire number of elements of this Tetrad is twenty-four. For the name Arrhetos has in itself seven letters, and Sige five, and Pater H. ha. five, and Aletheia seven; which being added together, the twice five and twice seven, completed the number of twenty-four. Likewise also the second Tetrad, Logos and Zoe, Anthropos and Ecclesia, showed the same number of elements. And the spoken name of the Savior, Soter, eight and ten, consists of H. consists of six letters, but his unspoken name of twenty-four letters. Christ the Son, of twelve letters; but the unspoken in H. Christ, of thirty letters. And for this reason he says he is alpha and omega, that he might indicate the dove, since this bird has this number. 1.8.12 But Jesus has, he says, this unspoken generation. For from the Mother of all things, the first Tetrad, in the manner of a daughter, came forth the second Tetrad, and became an Ogdoad, from which came forth a Decad; thus was made a Decad and an Ogdoad. The Decad, therefore, coming together with the Ogdoad, and making it tenfold, produced the number eighty; and multiplying the eighty again by ten, it generated the number eight hundred; so that the whole number of the letters, proceeding from the Ogdoad to the Decad, is eta and pi and omega, which is eighteen (18) H. Jesus. For the name of Jesus H. Jesus, according to the number in its letters, is eight hundred and eighty-eight. You have clearly also the super-celestial generation of the eta and sigma l. of Jesus according to them. Wherefore also the Greek alphabet has H. has eight units, and eight tens, and eight hundreds, the sum of eight hundred and eighty-eight then showing Int. et H. showing, that is the e i eta, H. Jesus who is composed of all the numbers. And for this H. reason he is called Alpha and Omega, signifying his origin from all things. And again thus: when the first Tetrad is added to itself by way of progression of number, the number ten appeared. For one and two and three and four added together make ten; and this they will to be Jesus. 1.8.13 But Christ also, he says, being of eight letters, signifies the first Ogdoad, which, being interwoven with the ten (Iota), brought forth Jesus. And it is also called, he says, Christ the Son, that is, the Dodecad; for the name Son has four letters, and Christ has eight; which being put together showed the magnitude of the Dodecad. Before, therefore, he says, the manifest form of this name appeared, that is, Jesus, the Son to the sons, men were in much ignorance and error. But when the six-letter name was manifested, who put on flesh, that he might descend to the perception of man, having in himself
