endures afflictions; and he who endures afflictions will have hope in God; and hope in God separates from all earthly attachment; and the mind, having been separated from this, will have love for God.
1.4 (d) He who loves God prefers the knowledge of Him above all things made by Him, and unceasingly through longing cleaves to it.
1.5 (e) If all things that exist were made through God and for God, and God is greater than the things made by Him; he who abandons 14__174 the greater and occupies himself with the lesser shows himself to prefer the things made by God over God.
1.6 (f) He who has his mind fastened on the love for God despises all visible things and the body itself as foreign.
1.7 (g) If the soul is greater than the body and God who created the world is incomparably greater than it, he who prefers the body to the soul and the world created by God to God is in no way different from idolaters.
1.8 (h) He who has separated his mind from love and devotion to God and has it bound to something sensible, this is he who prefers the body to the soul and the things made by the Creator God to God Himself.
1.9 (i) If the life of the mind is the illumination of knowledge, and love for God begets this; rightly has nothing been said to be greater than divine love.
1.10 (j) When the mind departs on its journey with longing of love for God, then it is completely unaware of itself or of any existing thing. For, illuminated by the divine and infinite light, it is insensible to all things made by Him, just as the physical eye is to the stars, when the sun rises.
1.11 (k) All the virtues work together with the mind towards divine longing, but more than all, pure prayer; for through it, being winged towards God, it goes outside of all existing things.
14__176 1.12 (l) When through love the mind is seized by divine knowledge and, going outside of existing things, becomes aware of the divine infinity, then according to the divine Isaiah, coming to a sense of its own humility in astonishment, it says with feeling the words of the prophet: "Woe is me, for I am pierced with sorrow; because I am a man and have unclean lips, I dwell in the midst of a people with unclean lips, and I have seen the King, the Lord of Sabaoth, with my eyes."
1.13 (m) He who loves God cannot but also love every man as himself, even if he is vexed at the passions of those not yet purified. Therefore, seeing their conversion and correction, he rejoices with immeasurable and inexpressible joy.
1.14 (n) An impassioned soul is unclean, filled with thoughts of desire and hatred.
1.15 (o) He who sees a trace of hatred in his own heart for any fault whatsoever against any person, is completely foreign to the love for God; because love for God absolutely does not tolerate hatred for man.
1.16 (p) "He who loves me," says the Lord, "will keep my commandments;" "and this is my commandment, that you love one another." Therefore he who does not love his neighbor does not keep the commandment; and he who does not keep the commandment cannot love the Lord either.
1.17 (q) Blessed is the man who is able to love every man equally.

ὑπομένει τὰ θλιβερά· ὁ δὲ ὑπομένων τὰ θλιβερὰ ἕξει τὴν εἰς Θεὸν ἐλπίδα· ἡ δὲ εἰς Θεὸν ἐλπὶς χωρίζει πάσης γηΐνης προσπαθείας· ταύτης δὲ ὁ νοῦς χωρισθεὶς ἕξει τὴν εἰς Θεὸν ἀγάπην.
1.4 (δ') Ὁ ἀγαπῶν τὸν Θεὸν πάντων τῶν ὑπ᾽ αὐτοῦ γεγονότων προτιμᾷ τὴν γνῶσιν αὐτοῦ καὶ ἀδιαλείπτως διὰ τοῦ πόθου ταύτῃ προσκαρτερεῖ.
1.5 (ε') Εἰ πάντα τὰ ὄντα διὰ τοῦ Θεοῦ καὶ διὰ τὸν Θεὸν γέγονε, κρείττων δὲ ὁ Θεὸς τῶν δι᾽ αὐτοῦ γεγονότων· ὁ καταλιμπάνων 14__174 τὸ κρεῖττον καὶ τοῖς χείροσιν ἐνασχολούμενος δείκνυσιν ἑαυτὸν προτιμῶντα τοῦ Θεοῦ τὰ δι᾽ αὐτοῦ γεγονότα.
1.6 (στ') Ὁ τῇ εἰς Θεὸν ἀγάπῃ τὸν νοῦν ἔχων προσηλωμένον πάντων τῶν ὁρωμένων καὶ αὐτοῦ τοῦ σώματος ὡς ἀλλοτρίου καταφρονεῖ.
1.7 (ζ') Εἰ κρείττων τοῦ σώματος ἡ ψυχὴ καὶ κρείττων τοῦ κόσμου ἀσυγκρίτως ὁ κτίσας αὐτὸν Θεός, ὁ προτιμῶν τῆς ψυχῆς τὸ σῶμα καὶ τοῦ Θεοῦ τὸν ὑπ᾽ αὐτοῦ κτισθέντα κόσμον οὐδὲν τῶν εἰδολολατρούντων διενήνοχεν.
1.8 (η') Ὁ τὸν νοῦν τῆς εἰς Θεὸν ἀγάπης καὶ προσεδρείας ἀποχωρίσας καί τινι τῶν αἰσθητῶν προσδεδεμένον ἔχων, οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ προτιμῶν τῆς ψυχῆς τὸ σῶμα καὶ τοῦ κτίσαντος Θεοῦ τὰ ὑπ᾽ αὐτοῦ γεγονότα.
1.9 (θ') Εἰ ἡ ζωὴ τοῦ νοῦ ὁ φωτισμός ἐστι τῆς γνώσεως, τοῦτον δὲ ἡ εἰς Θεὸν ἀγάπη τίκτει· καλῶς οὐδὲν τῆς θείας ἀγάπης εἴρηται μεῖζον.
1.10 (ι') Ὅταν τῷ ἔρωτι τῆς ἀγάπης πρὸς τὸν Θεὸν ὁ νοῦς ἐκδημῇ, τότε οὔτε ἑαυτοῦ οὔτε τινὸς τῶν ὄντων παντάπασιν ἐπαισθάνεται. Ὑπὸ γὰρ τοῦ θείου καὶ ἀπείρου φωτὸς καταλαμπόμενος, ἀναισθητεῖ πρὸς πάντα τὰ ὑπ᾽ αὐτοῦ γεγονότα, καθάπερ καὶ ὁ αἰσθητὸς ὀφθαλμὸς πρὸς τοὺς ἀστέρας, τοῦ ἡλίου ἀνατέλλοντος.
1.11 (ια') Πᾶσαι μὲν αἱ ἀρεταὶ συνεργοῦσι τῷ νῷ πρὸς τὸν θεῖον ἔρωτα, πλέον δὲ πάντων ἡ καθαρὰ προσευχή· διὰ ταύτης γὰρ πρὸς τὸν Θεὸν πτερούμενος, ἔξω γίνεται πάντων τῶν ὄντων.
14__176 1.12 (ιβ') Ὅταν διὰ τῆς ἀγάπης ὑπὸ τῆς θείας γνώσεως ὁ νοῦς ἁρπαγῇ καὶ ἔξω τῶν ὄντων γενόμενος τῆς θείας ἐπαισθάνηται ἀπειρίας, τότε κατὰ τὸν θεῖον Ἡσαΐαν ὑπὸ ἐκπλήξεως εἰς συναίσθησιν τῆς ἑαυτοῦ ἐρχόμενος ταπεινότητος μετὰ διαθέσεως λέγει τὰ τοῦ προφήτου ῥήματα· Ὢ τάλας ἐγώ, ὅτι κατανένυγμαι· ὅτι ἄνθρωπος ὢν καὶ ἀκάθαρτα χείλη ἔχων, ἐν μέσῳ λαοῦ ἀκάθαρτα χείλη ἔχοντος ἐγὼ κατοικῶ καὶ τὸν βασιλέα Κύριον Σαβαὼθ εἶδον τοῖς ὀφθαλμοῖς μου.
1.13 (ιγ') Ὁ ἀγαπῶν τὸν Θεὸν οὐ δύναται μὴ καὶ πάντα ἄνθρωπον ἀγαπῆσαι ὡς ἑαυτόν, εἰ καὶ πρὸς τὰ πάθη δυσχεραίνει τῶν μήπω κεκαθαρμένων. ∆ιὸ καὶ τὴν ἐπιστροφὴν αὐτῶν βλέπων καὶ τὴν διόρθωσιν, ἀμετρέτῳ καὶ ἀνεκλαλήτῳ χαίρει χαρᾷ.
1.14 (ιδ') Ἀκάθαρτός ἐστι ψυχὴ ἐμπαθής, λογισμῶν ἐπιθυμίας καὶ μίσους πεπληρωμένη.
1.15 (ιε') Ὁ ἴχνος μίσους βλέπων ἐν τῇ ἑαυτοῦ καρδίᾳ διὰ οἱονδήποτε πταῖσμα πρὸς τὸν οἱονδήποτε ἄνθρωπον, ἀλλότριος τυγχάνει πάμπαν τῆς εἰς Θεὸν ἀγάπης· διότι ἡ εἰς τὸν Θεὸν ἀγάπη τοῦ εἰς ἄνθρωπον μίσους παντελῶς οὐκ ἀνέχεται.
1.16 (ιστ') Ὁ ἀγαπῶν με, φησὶν ὁ Κύριος, τὰς ἐντολάς μου τηρήσει· αὕτη δέ ἐστιν ἡ ἐντολὴ ἡ ἐμή, ἵνα ἀγαπᾶτε ἀλλήλους. Ὁ οὖν μὴ ἀγαπῶν τὸν πλησίον τὴν ἐντολὴν οὐ τηρεῖ· ὁ δὲ τὴν ἐντολὴν μὴ τηρῶν οὐδὲ τὸν Κύριον ἀγαπῆσαι δύναται.
1.17 (ιζ') Μακάριος ἄνθρωπος, ὁ πάντα ἄνθρωπον ἐξ ἴσου ἀγαπῆσαι δυνηθείς.
