is able to be saved and, having obtained the resurrection, to inherit incorruption. But Adam, having been cast out of paradise, thus knew Eve his wife, whom God had made for him as a wife from his rib. and this was not as if He was unable to form his wife separately, but God knew beforehand that men would name a multitude of gods. Therefore, being prescient and knowing that error was about to name a multitude of non-existent gods through the serpent (for though there is one God, from that time error was already practicing to sow secretly a multitude of gods and to say: "You will be as gods"), lest, therefore, it should be supposed that this god made the man, but another the woman, for this reason He made them both; not only so, but He also <formed the man alone from the earth so that> through this might be shown the mystery of the monarchy which is according to God, and at the same time God made his wife <from his rib> so that there might be greater affection towards her. Therefore Adam, speaking to Eve, said: "This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh," and he also prophesied, saying: "For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and shall be joined to his wife, and the two shall be one flesh"; which very thing is shown to be fulfilled in our own selves. For who that lawfully marries does not disregard mother and father and all kindred and all his household, cleaving to and being united with his own wife, favoring her more? Wherefore even until death some often become responsible on account of their own wives. This Eve, because she was deceived by the serpent from the beginning and became the author of sin, the evil-doing demon, who is also called Satan, who then spoke to her through the serpent, working even to this day in men possessed by him, invokes Eva. And he is called a demon and a dragon because he has run away from God; for he was an angel at first. And the account concerning this is long; wherefore for now I pass over the narrative concerning them; for we have made an account of him in other places. When, therefore, Adam knew his wife Eve, she conceived and bore a son, whose name was Cain. And she said: "I have gotten a man through God." And she again bore a second, whose name was Abel. He became a keeper of sheep; but Cain worked the land. The story concerning them is longer, but it also contains the economy of the explanation; wherefore the book itself which is entitled Genesis of the World can teach the lovers of learning the historical details more accurately. When, therefore, Satan saw not only Adam and his wife alive, but also that they had made children, over whom he had not prevailed to kill them, being moved by envy, when he saw Abel pleasing God, he worked in his brother who was called Cain and made him kill his brother Abel. And

καὶ
