his name,” calling him a man because of the incarnation, and sunrise because he has risen, being the sun of righteousness; for it is written about him in the last of the Twelve Prophets, from the person of the Father who sent him: “The sun of righteousness shall arise for you who fear my name, and healing is in his wings.” 1.254 But giving the reason for his servant being called sunrise, he says: “Because the stone from the face” of the one who shone forth “has seven eyes.” And who is this, but the Savior who came among us, having the seven-powered nature of sight? For it is said in Isaiah about him: “A rod shall come forth from the root of Jesse, and a flower shall rise up from the root, and the Spirit of God shall rest upon him, a spirit of wisdom and understanding, a spirit of counsel and might, a spirit of knowledge and piety, and it will fill him with a spirit of the fear of God.” 1.255 And behold the seven eyes of the Lord upon one stone, of which one is a spirit of wisdom, and another of understanding. For what eye is so luminous, beholding all things beautiful and great, as the spirit of wisdom, and likewise the spirit of understanding? 1.256 The spiritual stone, thus endowed with eyes, being itself counsel and might, beholds all things with counsel and strength, having been filled with the Spirit of God with knowledge and piety, then most of all when he took the form of a servant. For he does not receive from without the spirit of wisdom and understanding, of counsel and might, of knowledge and piety that rests upon him; for it is said to rest upon him. For each of the things mentioned is proper and suitable to him, with only the spirit of fear coming upon him so as to fill him. 1.257 This spirit of fear is called by another name, reverence, belonging to the man from Mary; the Apostle writes about this literally as follows: “Who in the days of his flesh, having offered up prayers and supplications, with loud crying and tears, to him who was able to save him from death, and was heard because of his reverence.” He has reverence not as God, but as he is man. 1.258 That he who has the seven-powered vision is called a stone is proved from the divine scriptures; the chief of the apostles, Peter, using the saying from the Psalm that goes like this: “The stone which the builders rejected, this has become the head of the corner,” says most reproachfully to the teachers of Israel: “This is the stone which was despised by you the builders, which has become the head of the corner.” 1.259 For how did he not join and make one corner of the two walls, the one being built from the Jews who came to the gospel and the one from the Gentiles who believed? For since the Church is composed of both Jews and Greeks, Christ, having become its head, made one corner, the ones joined together into one building now agreeing in one faith, all people who have accepted the divine gospel from the two peoples being created into one new man. 1.260 The stone so proclaimed, being “a cornerstone, chosen, precious,” God has set in the foundations of Zion, so that no one “be ashamed” because of sin, a purification having occurred for everyone who believes in him. Those who come to the immortally living Word, being living themselves, are built up as unnoticed stones, so that a spiritual house may be established and an intelligible altar, upon which the sacrifice of praise and all kindred sacrifices that are spiritual are offered up. 1.261 May we too become living, holy stones, rolling upon the earth of God, so that, “having been built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets of Christ Jesus,” we may be completed as a temple and a spiritual house, so that God may dwell in us. 1.262 Zach.
