having acquired it will spend time in contemplation, and will not care for the things in the house; for anger is clothed with meekness and humility, and desire with prudence and self-control. Garments for herself of fine linen and purple: The principles of earth and sea are garments of a rational soul of fine linen and purple. But another will say that the contemplation of things that have come to be and the contemplation of the Holy Trinity are the garment of a pure mind of fine linen and purple. She made fine linens and sold them, and girdles (as in cod. Alex.) to the Canaanites: The linen sheet that appeared to Peter on the housetop was a symbol of the sensible world; for the animals contained in it signified the different characters of men, cleansed by the cross of Christ. If, then, the one linen sheet signified this world, perhaps the many linen sheets contain the contemplation concerning different worlds, which the pure soul, having contemplated, also imparted to others. And if the Canaanites are interpreted as the humble, well did she not give the linens to the humble in mind, but the linens to the pure, and to the Canaanites the girdles, which are symbols of the practical life, constricting the passionate part of the soul. The ways of her household are secure: If the devil is king of all that is in the waters and finds no rest through waterless places, well are the ways of the pure soul said to be secure. She does not eat the bread of idleness: The bread of idleness they say are vices. For a prudent woman is blessed, and let her praise the fear of the Lord: If the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, rightly does the soul that has obtained wisdom praise the fear of the Lord, which became for it the cause of such knowledge. Στεγναὶ διατριβαὶ οἴκων αὐτῆς: Εἰ ὁ διάβολος βασιλεύς ἐστι πάντων τῶν ἐν τοῖς ὕδασι καὶ δι' ἀνύδρων τόπων ἀνάπαυσιν οὐχ εὑρίσκει, καλῶς τῆς καθαρᾶς ψυχῆς στεγναὶ αἱ διατριβαὶ λέγονται εἶναι. Σῖτα δὲ ὀκνηρὰ οὐκ ἔφαγεν: Σῖτα ὀκνηρὰ τὰς κακίας εἶναί φασιν. Γυνὴ γὰρ συνετὴ εὐλογεῖται, φόβον δὲ κυρίου αὕτη αἰνείτω: Εἰ ἀρχὴ σοφίας φόβος κυρίου, δικαίως ἡ τυχοῦσα τῆς σοφίας ψυχὴ αἰνεῖ τὸν φόβον κυρίου, ὅστις γέγονεν αὐτῇ τῆς τοιαύτης γνώσεως πρόξενος. Μετελήφθησαν ἀφ' ὧν εὕρομεν ἑξαπλῶν. καὶ πάλιν αὐτὰ χειρὶ Πάμφιλος καὶ Εὐσέβιος διορθώσαντο.
