Therefore it is not good to respect this face in judgment. 316 25, 25 As cold water is pleasing to a thirsty soul, so is good news from a far country So is the knowledge of God from the land of the meek. 317 25, 26 As if someone were to block a spring and spoil the outflow of water, so it is unseemly for a righteous man to have fallen before an ungodly one Of the thoughts of the mind, some are called its falls, some its risings, some its seats, and some its standings; and others its walking, and some are called its stumbling blocks; and others hard and soft and fragrant and sweet and bitter and smooth and straight and crooked; and again some of them are called thorns and thistles, and others light and darkness and life and death, and others sicknesses and healths; and others again are called falsehood and truth; and scripture applies many other names to both the soul and its thoughts. And what it applies to it, to name a few of many, are these: mind, soul, heart, man, husband, wife, slave, servant, father, son, spirit, eye, mouth, lips, tongue, throat, belly, bosom, arm, finger, wood, nostril, sheep, goat, shepherd; and there are many more names for the soul, which it is not possible to set forth now, because the genre of scholia does not admit of verbosity. Here, then, a righteous mind falls before Satan, having received an unclean thought or a false dogma. And David also says: “before him all who go down to the dust will fall”; but this fall contains true knowledge and pure thoughts. 318 25, 28 Like a city whose walls are thrown down and unfortified, so is a man who does anything without counsel Here he called counsel the inclination of the heart toward the better.

319 26, 3 As a whip for a horse and a goad for a donkey, so a rod for a lawless nation

The rod is now a symbol of punishment. 320 26, 6 He who sends a message by the hand of a foolish messenger makes reproach for his own ways One must not give what is holy to the dogs, nor cast pearls before swine. 321 26, 7 Take away the going of legs, and lawlessness from the mouth of fools Take away the evil way of a fool, and make false knowledge far from him. 322 26, 8 He who binds a stone in a sling is like one who gives glory to a fool Knowledge will not befit a fool, nor a worthless stone in a golden sling. 323 26, 10 All the flesh of fools suffers much hardship, for their ecstasy is crushed If the ecstasy of fools is crushed, by which they departed from God, having become clean again they approach God; “for all flesh shall see the salvation of God.” It must be noted here that he called the souls fattened by wickedness the flesh of fools. And so the Lord also says: “My Spirit shall not abide in these men, because they are flesh.” 324 26, 11 As a dog when it returns to its own vomit and becomes hateful,

Ἐνταῦθα οὖν πίπτει δίκαιος νοῦς ἐνώπιον τοῦ σατανᾶ, λογισμὸν ἀκάθαρτον ἢ ψευδὲς δόγμα ὑποδεξάμενος. Καὶ ὁ ∆αυὶδ δέ φησιν· «ἐνώπιον αὐτοῦ προπεσοῦνται πάντες οἱ καταβαίνοντες εἰς γῆν»· ἀλλὰ τοῦτο τὸ πτῶμα περιέχει γνῶσιν ἀληθῆ καὶ λογισμοὺς καθαρούς. 318 25, 28 ὥσπερ πόλις τὰ τείχη καταβεβλημένη καὶ ἀτείχιστος, οὕτως ἀνὴρ ὃς οὐ μετὰ βουλῆς τι πράσσει Βουλὴν εἶπεν ἐνταῦθα τὴν ἐπὶ τὸ κρεῖττον ῥοπὴν τῆς καρδίας.

319 26, 3 ὥσπερ μάστιξ ἵππῳ καὶ κέντρον ὄνῳ, οὕτως ῥάβδος ἔθνει

παρανόμῳ Ἡ ῥάβδος νῦν σύμβολόν ἐστι κολάσεως. 320 26, 6 ἐκ τῶν ἑαυτοῦ ὁδῶν ὄνειδος ποιεῖται ὁ ἀποστείλας δι' ἀγγέλου ἄφρονος λόγον Οὐ δεῖ τοῖς κυσὶ διδόναι τὰ ἅγια οὐδὲ βάλλειν τοὺς μαργαρίτας ἔμπροσθεν τῶν χοίρων. 321 26, 7 ἀφελοῦ πορείαν σκελῶν καὶ παρανομίαν ἐκ στόματος ἀφρόνων Περίελε ἄφρονος ὁδὸν κακὴν καὶ γνῶσιν ψευδῆ μακρὰν ποίησον ἀπ' αὐτοῦ. 322 26, 8 ὃς ἀποδεσμεύει λίθον ἐν σφενδόνῃ, ὅμοιός ἐστι τῷ διδόντι ἄφρονι δόξαν Οὐχ ἁρμόσει ἄφρονι γνῶσις καὶ λίθος ἄτιμος ἐν σφενδόνῃ χρυσῇ. 323 26, 10 πολλὰ χειμάζεται πᾶσα σὰρξ ἀφρόνων· συντρίβεται γὰρ ἡ ἔκστασις αὐτῶν Ἐὰν συντριβῇ ἡ ἔκστασις τῶν ἀφρόνων, καθ' ἣν ἐξέστησαν θεοῦ, πάλιν καθαροὶ γενόμενοι προσέρχονται θεῷ· «πᾶσα γὰρ σὰρξ ὄψεται τὸ σωτήριον τοῦ θεοῦ.» Προσεκτέον δὲ ἐνταῦθα ὅτι τὰς παχυνθείσας ψυχὰς ἀπὸ τῆς κακίας σάρκας ἀφρόνων ὠνόμασεν. Οὕτω δὲ καὶ ὁ κύριός φησιν· «οὐ μὴ καταμείνῃ τὸ πνεῦμά μου ἐν τοῖς ἀνθρώποις τούτοις διὰ τὸ εἶναι αὐτοὺς σάρκας.» 324 26, 11 ὥσπερ κύων ὅταν ἐπέλθῃ ἐπὶ τὸν ἑαυτοῦ ἔμετον καὶ μισητὸς γένηται,
