he had no small fear, lest, while it seemed good to God to attend to those men, he himself might have his mind on other things and thus act outside the divine will. Therefore, calling them together, he urged them, both privately and publicly, establishing synods of the people, he asked that peace might at some time be made, and to look to the concord of the church. But he did not persuade them; for the memory of Joseph was clearly an obstacle to them and the pollution of the church, as they thought and said, by communicating with excommunicates. And by excommunication they meant that of Arsenios against Joseph. I do not know if also the things sworn long ago, not having received absolution, which indeed they asserted Hyakinthos, having received the throne 83 from Arsenios, had been granted the power to dissolve, were also a part contributing to the pollution. And if they also added as a third the matter concerning the pope, not being satisfied with the former things, let this also be so. According to all which things, they themselves being entirely untouched by the pollutions, they themselves were justified in effecting the correction, but otherwise would in no way accept concord.

31. Now, for some of the Arsenites who had made peace, and especially for those who had come together at Atramyttion, as has been said, these things had been earnestly pursued, so at that time there was also a desire among them in addition to those former matters, to bring back the body of Arsenios from Prokonnesos. And indeed they again reported this to the emperor and made their request. Yet there was also a deep and clever consideration in these things, as was shown, for those who made the request; for he who was unjustly expelled, being restored to his former honor, would thereby show Joseph to be a usurper, to whom indeed an excommunication was also attached, as they said, from him would completely undermine his position among those who admired him 84 himself. The emperor, however, looking entirely to the peace of the church, as those who saw it believed, and thereby anticipating the others (for the strong point put forward by them was the exile of the patriarch, on account of which they led the others to believe he had been unjustly cast out, which indeed he wished to forestall by the honor from the translation of the body being done by him and his own people), immediately consented to the request. The only obstacle for the emperor in this matter was that it had been previously said by some that an excommunication had been placed by him upon any who should ever move his body, on account of which alone he was ready to honor the exiled one immediately by bringing back his body. But since this was said by those who knew that what was being rumored was falsely spoken and had been fabricated by that disciple of his, Matthew, who wished to remain in that place with the body, immediately the men around Theodore Manuelites prepared a swift ship in good order; who indeed within a few days, with fitting honor and worthy reverence, with a very prosperous voyage, reached the city of Constantine. And then the emperor assembled with the whole senate, and the patriarch assembled together with the bishops, and as many of the clergy who had made peace after him, and all the people of the state, 85 some having been summoned, and others coming of their own accord. And having arrived at the tomb of Eugenios, they covered that coffin with a most beautiful veil, and having entrusted it to the hands of holy men as was fitting, with abundant lights and incense, with hymns and songs and appropriate acclamations, on foot and at a walking pace they reached the great and holy precinct of the Wisdom of God, and wishing to appropriate for themselves, as it were, the object of the Arsenites' veneration, so as to appear as communicants and concelebrants of the patriarch in every way, they put on the sacred vestments, and being about to celebrate the sacred liturgy, while the antiphons were being sung, they also vested the body in sacred robes and processed with it as it was carried in the hands of bishops. Then, having seemed to place it upon the synthronon, they completed the rites of the sacred ceremony to the end, with the body standing before the holy table. From there, having placed it in the casket, they set it up on the right side of the bema, guarding against theft by the Arsenites with locks and seals, as best they could, and on the third

31. Ἦν μὲν οὖν καὶ τῶν Ἀρσενιατῶν τισὶν εἰρηνεύσασιν, καὶ μάλισθ' ὅτι καὶ κατὰ τὸ Ἀτραμύττιον συνελθοῦσιν, ὡς εἴ ρηται, ἐσπούδαστο ταῦτα, ἦν οὖν τότε καὶ σφίσιν ἔφεσις ἐπὶ τοῖς προτέροις ἐκείνοις ἀνακομίζειν τὸ σῶμα τὸ Ἀρσενίου ἐκ Προι κοννήσου. οἳ δὴ καὶ αὖθις βασιλεῖ προσανέφερον καὶ ἠξίουν. πλὴν καὶ σκέμμα τι βαθὺ καὶ γενναῖον ἐν τούτοις ἦν, ὡς ἔδειξεν, ἀξιοῦσιν· ὁ γὰρ ὡς ἀδίκως ἐκβληθεὶς ἐπὶ τὴν προτέραν τιμὴν ἀναγόμενος εἶχε δηλοῦν ἐντεῦθεν τὸν Ἰωσὴφ ἐπιβήτορα, ᾧ δὴ καὶ ἀφορισμὸς προστριβόμενος, ὡς ἔλεγον, παρ' ἐκείνου ὑπορ ρεῖν τὰ κατ' ἐκείνου τελέως ἐδίδου ἂν παρὰ τοῖς αὐτὸν ἐκεῖνον 84 θαυμάζουσιν. ὁ μέντοι γε βασιλεὺς πρὸς τὴν τῆς ἐκκλησίας ὅλως ἀφορῶν εἰρήνην, ὡς τοὺς ὁρῶντας πιστεύειν, προκαταλαμ βάνων δὲ καὶ τοὺς ἄλλους ἐντεῦθεν (τὸ γὰρ σφίσιν ἰσχυρὸν προ τεινόμενον ἡ ἐξορία τοῦ πατριάρχου ἦν, δι' ἣν ὑπήγοντο τοὺς ἄλλους ἀδίκως ἐκβεβλημένου, ὃ δὴ καὶ προαναστέλλειν ἠβούλετο τῷ πρὸς αὐτοῦ καὶ τῶν αὐτοῦ τὴν ἐκ τῆς μετακομιδῆς τοῦ σώ ματος τιμὴν γίνεσθαι), παραχρῆμα νεύει πρὸς τὴν ἀξίωσιν. ἦν δὲ μόνον εἰς τοῦτο τῷ βασιλεῖ προσιστάμενον τὸ φθάσαι λεχθῆ ναι παρά τινων ὡς ἀφορισμὸς ἐπίκειται παρ' ἐκείνου τοῖς ὁτεδή ποτε τὸ σῶμα μετακομίσουσι, παρ' ὃ καὶ μόνον ἕτοιμος ἦν ἐκ τοῦ παραχρῆμα τῇ καταγωγῇ τοῦ σώματος τὸν ἐξορισθέντα τι μᾶν. ἐπεὶ δὲ τοῦτο παρὰ τῶν εἰδότων ἐλέγετο ὡς ψευδῶς ἐλέχθη καὶ ὡς ἐπλάσθη παρὰ τοῦ μαθητοῦ ἐκείνου Ματθαίου τὸ φημι ζόμενον, τῷ τόπῳ προσμένειν μετὰ τοῦ σώματος θέλοντος, εὐ θὺς ταχυναυτοῦντες ἐν ἐνήρει οἱ ἀμφὶ τὸν Μανουηλίτην Θεόδω ρον ἡτοιμάζοντο· οἳ δὴ καὶ ἡμερῶν ὀλίγων ὑπὸ προσηκούσῃ τιμῇ καὶ αἰδοῖ ἀξίᾳ μετ' εὐπλοίας πάσης τὴν Κωνσταντίνου καταλαμ βάνουσι. καὶ τότε ξυνέρχεται μὲν βασιλεὺς ξὺν πάσῃ συγκλήτῳ, συνέρχεται δὲ πατριάρχης συνάμ' ἀρχιερεῦσι, καὶ τῶν κληρικῶν ὅσοι μετ' ἐκεῖνον εἰρήνευον, καὶ λαὸς ἅπας τῆς πολιτείας, οἱ 85 μὲν προσκληθέντες οἱ δὲ καὶ αὐτόκλητοι. καὶ τὰ τοῦ Εὐγενίου καταλαβόντες θήκην μὲν ἐκείνην πέπλῳ τῶν καλλίστων περικα λύπτουσι, καὶ χερσὶν ἱερῶν ἀνδρῶν κατὰ τὸ προσῆκον πιστεύ σαντες ὑπὸ φωσὶ δαψιλέσι καὶ θυμιάμασιν, ὕμνοις καὶ ᾠδαῖς καὶ εὐφημισμοῖς τοῖς πρέπουσι, πεζῇ καὶ βάδην τὸ μέγα καὶ ἱε ρὸν τέμενος τῆς τοῦ θεοῦ σοφίας καταλαμβάνουσι, καὶ σφίσιν ὥσπερ αὐτοῖς οἰκειοῦν τὸ τῶν Ἀρσενιατῶν βουλόμενοι σέμνωμα, ὡς καὶ τοῦ πατριάρχου κοινωνοῖς φανεῖσι καὶ συλλειτουργοῖς ἄν τικρυς, ἐπενδύοντο μὲν τὰς ἱερὰς ἐσθῆτας, πρὸς τῷ τελεῖν δὲ τὴν ἱερὰν λειτουργίαν ὄντες, τῶν ἀντιφώνων ψαλλομένων, στο λὴν καὶ τὸ σῶμα τῶν ἱερῶν ἐπενδύσαντες χερσὶν ἀρχιερέων φερο μένῳ συνεισοδεύουσιν. εἶτα πρὸς τῷ συνθρόνῳ δόξαντες ἐπι καθιζάνειν, τὰ τῆς ἱερᾶς τελετῆς συνεπλήρουν εἰς τέλος πρὸ τῆς ἱερᾶς τραπέζης ἱσταμένῳ τῷ σώματι. ἐντεῦθεν καὶ περὶ τὰ δε ξιὰ τοῦ βήματος τῷ κιβωτίῳ ἐνθέντες ἱστῶσι, κλεισὶ καὶ σφρα γῖσι τὴν ἐκ τῶν Ἀρσενιατῶν κλοπήν, ὡς ἐνῆν, φυλαττόμενοι, καὶ τρίτης
