old age. And he takes his son in his place. Then the camp is divided, and they attach themselves to Sheba. And David sends Amasa to make war on him; but Joab kills Amasa by treachery, and besieges the city to which Sheba had fled. And those in the 56.348 city, on the advice of a woman, cutting off the head of Sheba, threw it from the wall to Joab, and thus they were delivered from the war. A famine seizes the land; and the solution to the famine was for some of Saul’s family to be given over to the Gibeonites. And David spares Mephibosheth, because of the oath to Jonathan. And he gives over the sons and descendants of Saul, and buries Saul and Jonathan in the tomb of Kish. Here wars occur. And they prevent David from going out, lest he be endangered. Then he says the seventeenth psalm. He recounts the noble deeds and feats of valor of David’s chiefs. Joab is ordered to number the people, and he numbers them; and Israel was nine hundred thousand, and Judah four hundred thousand, all warriors. Then Gad the prophet comes, giving him a choice of three punishments, whichever he wished to undergo: either three years of famine, or three days of fleeing from pursuing enemies, or three days of plague. And he chose the three days of plague, and seventy thousand died from morning until noon. Then David says: Behold, I have sinned, and I the shepherd have done wickedly, but these the flock, what have they done? Let your hand be against me, and against my father’s house. The punishment ceased. And David is commanded to sacrifice [or: to set up] an altar on the threshing floor of Ornan, and to sacrifice; and he did so. Adonijah son of David feasts those with Joab and Abiathar, as one about to be king. Bathsheba enters, according to the counsel of Nathan the prophet, and reports to David; and while she was speaking, Nathan also entered, having arranged for Solomon to become king. They went out, having set Solomon upon the royal mule. Then Nathan the prophet and Zadok the priest went to Gihon, and they anointed him and said: Long live the king. Jonathan the son came and announced these things to Adonijah as he was feasting. And the others fled, but Adonijah took refuge at the altar, fearing Solomon. Then he brings him out from there, and he came and did obeisance to the king. As David was about to die, he exhorted Solomon to keep the law of God; for thus he would obtain the promises that had been promised to him. And he gives orders concerning Joab and Shimei, that they should be punished, and concerning the sons of Barzillai, that they should receive honor, 56.349 and enjoy the royal table. And he dies, having reigned forty years. 3 Kings. Solomon kills Adonijah, because he asked for Abishag, and he expelled Abiathar from the priesthood. And the threat against Eli was fulfilled; for from him he traced his lineage. And he also killed Joab; and he appointed Zadok the priest as priest in place of Abiathar. And Solomon gives a command to Shimei, that he should remain in the city always; but if he ever went out, he would not do this unpunished, but would suffer the penalty of death. Slaves were lost to him; but he, forgetting the command, went out to seek them, and Solomon, having learned of it, killed him. A narrative concerning the wisdom of Solomon, concerning the peace in his time, concerning the luxury of his table, and concerning chariots, concerning horses, concerning all his wealth. Solomon asks for wisdom from God. Then he judges between the women who came to him concerning the child. Again an account of the wisdom of Solomon, of the luxury of his table, and who performed this service for him. He sends to Hiram the king of Tyre, asking for woodcutters for hire; which he indeed provided. Here is included the number of the workers, and the quantity of the material prepared for the temple. Then the building of the temple. Solomon prays in the temple, and sacrifices, and dedicates the house. God promises good things to him, if he keeps his commandments, and threatens the opposite, if he transgresses. And there was

Ἦν δὲ
