the Roman kingdom, improvident, naked, unfed, deprived of every resource for living; not approaching the sea, so that they might not have a visit from the merciful. And so they are naked and unfed, having only the hope of God; exhorting all Christians, crying out this:
Pray for the Lord, that God may perfect his mercy 15Γ_108 with our humility, and teach us that those who sail with him experience a savage sea, the boat being shaken by winds and waves, but remaining unshaken. For he allows them to be tried by a great surge, testing their disposition toward him, so that with a great voice they might cry out: Lord, save us, we are perishing; and learn to ascribe all things of their salvation to him alone; and may not be trusting in themselves, and may find a great calm, the wind and the waves having been stilled; and he delivers them into the midst of wolves, and commands them to enter through the narrow gate, and to travel the afflicted path; and he holds out famine, and thirst, and nakedness, and bonds, and prisons, and abductions, and scourges, and the cross, and nails and vinegar, and gall, and spittings, and slaps, and blows, and mockings; and suffering and manifold deaths; of which the end is the all-bright resurrection, bringing with itself peace to those persecuted for his sake; and joy, to those afflicted for his sake; and an assumption into heaven, and a bringing to the Paternal and super-essential throne, and an inheritance being above every principality and authority and power and dominion; and every name that is named, whether in this age, or in the one to come.
May we all attain this, by the prayers and intercessions of the all-hymned, all-venerable and most glorious, who is properly by nature the Theotokos and ever-virgin Mary, and of the holy apostles, prophets and martyrs. Amen.
DISCUSSION OF SAINT MAXIMUS WITH PYRRHUS * A NOTE ON THE DISCUSSION THAT TOOK PLACE concerning the matters that have been raised about
the ecclesiastical dogmas, in the presence of Gregory the most pious patrician, and of the most holy bishops found with him, and of the other God-loving and glorious men, by Pyrrhus, who was Patriarch of Constantinople, and Maximus the most devout monk, in the month of July, of the 3rd indiction. Pyrrhus indeed was an ally to the innovation introduced by him, and by the one before him in Byzantium; that is to say, of one will; while Maximus was an advocate for the patristic and apostolic teaching that has come down to us from above; through the aforementioned extraordinary man, I mean Gregory the most honorable patrician, the aforementioned men; that is, Pyrrhus and Maximus, were brought face to face with each other. And Pyrrhus began the dialogue with Maximus, speaking thus.
