and the shepherd says: Why do you inquire in yourself concerning the elm and the vine? I am inquiring, I say, sir, because they are very well suited to each other. These two trees, he says, are set for a type of the servants of God. I wished, I say, to know the type of these trees of which you speak. Do you see, he says, the elm and the vine? I see, I say, sir. This vine, he says, bears fruit, but the elm is a fruitless tree; but this vine, if it does not climb upon the elm, cannot bear much fruit when cast on the ground, and the fruit it does bear, it bears rotten, not hanging upon the elm. When, therefore, the vine is cast upon the elm, it bears fruit both from itself and from the elm. You see, then, that the elm also gives much fruit, not less than the vine, but rather even more. How, I say, sir, more? Because, he says, the vine hanging upon the elm gives its fruit plentifully and well, but when cast on the ground it bears little and rotten. This parable, therefore, is set for the servants of God, for the poor and the rich. How, I say, sir, make it known to me. Listen, he says. The rich man has wealth, but in things pertaining to the Lord he is poor, being distracted about his riches, and he has very little intercession and confession toward the Lord, and what he has is weak and small and has no power otherwise. When, therefore, the rich man rests upon the poor man and supplies him with what is needful, he believes that if he works for the poor man he will be able to find his reward with God; because the poor man is rich in his intercession and in his confession, and his intercession has great power with God. The rich man, therefore, supplies everything to the poor man without doubting; the poor man, therefore, being supplied by the rich, intercedes with God, giving thanks to Him for the one who gives to him; and the latter is even more zealous for the poor man, so that he may be unceasing in his life; for he knows that the poor man's intercession is acceptable and rich toward the Lord. Both, therefore, complete the work. The poor man works by his intercession, in which he is rich, which he received from the Lord; this he gives back to the Lord who supplies him. And the rich man likewise provides his wealth, which he received from the Lord, to the poor man without doubting. And this is a great and acceptable work with God, because he understood concerning his wealth and worked for the poor man from the gifts of the Lord and completed the ministry rightly. Among men, therefore, the elm seems not to bear fruit, and they do not know nor understand that when a drought comes, the elm, having water, nourishes the vine, and the vine, having unceasing water, yields a double fruit, both for itself and for the elm. So also the poor, interceding with the Lord on behalf of the rich, fulfill their wealth, and again the rich, supplying the poor with what is necessary, fulfill their souls. Therefore, both become partakers of the righteous work. He who does these things, therefore, will not be forsaken by God, but will be written in the books of the living. Blessed are those who have and understand that they are enriched by the Lord; for he who understands this will be able to minister some good thing. Parable 3 He showed me many trees not having leaves, but they seemed to me to be as it were withered; for they were all alike. He says to me: Do you see, he says, these trees? Ἄκουε, φησίν· ὁ μὲν πλούσιος ἔχει χρή ματα, τὰ δὲ πρὸς τὸν κύριον πτωχεύει, περισπώμενος περὶ τὸν πλοῦτον ἑαυτοῦ, καὶ λίαν μικρὰν ἔχει τὴν ἔντευξιν καὶ τὴν ἐξομολόγησιν πρὸς τὸν κύριον, καὶ ἣν ἔχει, βληχρὰν καὶ μικρὰν καὶ ἄλλην μὴ ἔχουσαν δύναμιν. ὅταν οὖν ἐπαναπαῇ ἐπὶ τὸν πένητα ὁ πλούσιος καὶ χορηγῇ αὐτῷ τὰ δέοντα, πι στεύει ὅτι ἐὰν ἐργάσηται εἰς τὸν πένητα δυνήσεται τὸν μισθὸν εὑρεῖν παρὰ τῷ θεῷ· ὅτι ὁ πένης πλούσιός ἐστιν ἐν τῇ ἐντεύξει αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐν τῇ ἐξο μολογήσει, καὶ δύναμιν μεγάλην ἔχει παρὰ τῷ θεῷ ἡ ἔντευξις αὐτοῦ. ἐπι χορηγεῖ οὖν ὁ πλούσιος τῷ πένητι πάντα ἀδιστάκτως· ὁ πένης οὖν ἐπιχορη γούμενος ὑπὸ τοῦ πλουσίου ἐντυγχάνει τῷ θεῷ εὐχαριστῶν αὐτῷ, ὑπὲρ τοῦ διδόντος αὐτῷ· κἀκεῖνος ἔτι καὶ ἔτι σπουδάζει περὶ τοῦ πένητος, ἵνα ἀδιά λειπτος γένηται ἐν τῇ ζωῇ αὐτοῦ· οἶδε γάρ, ὅτι ἡ τοῦ πένητος ἔντευξις προσ δεκτή ἐστιν καὶ πλουσία πρὸς κύριον. ἀμφότεροι οὖν τὸ ἔργον τελοῦσιν· ὁ μὲν πένης ἐργάζεται τῇ ἐντεύξει, ἐν ᾗ πλουτεῖ, ἣν ἔλαβεν παρὰ τοῦ κυρίου· ταύτην ἀποδίδωσι τῷ κυρίῳ τῷ ἐπιχορηγοῦντι αὐτῷ. καὶ ὁ πλούσιος ὡσαύτως τὸ πλοῦτος, ὃ ἔλαβεν παρὰ τοῦ κυρίου, ἀδιστάκτως παρέχεται τῷ πένητι. καὶ τοῦτο ἔργον μέγα ἐστὶν καὶ δεκτὸν παρὰ τῷ θεῷ, ὅτι συνῆ κεν ἐπὶ τῷ πλούτῳ αὐτοῦ καὶ ἠργάσατο εἰς τὸν πένητα ἐκ τῶν δωρημάτων τοῦ κυρίου καὶ ἐτέλεσεν τὴν διακονίαν ὀρθῶς. παρὰ τοῖς οὖν ἀνθρώποις ἡ πτελέα δοκεῖ καρπὸν μὴ φέρειν, καὶ οὐκ οἴδασιν οὐδὲ νοοῦσιν ὅτι, ὅταν ἀβροχία γένηται, ἡ πτελέα ἔχουσα ὕδωρ τρέφει τὴν ἄμπελον, καὶ ἡ ἄμπε λος ἀδιάλειπτον ἔχουσα τὸ ὕδωρ διπλοῦν τὸν καρπὸν ἀποδίδωσιν, καὶ ὑπὲρ ἑαυτῆς καὶ ὑπὲρ τῆς πτελέας. οὕτως καὶ οἱ πένητες ὑπὲρ τῶν πλου σίων ἐντυγχάνοντες πρὸς τὸν κύριον πληροφοροῦσι τὸ πλοῦτος αὐτῶν, καὶ πάλιν οἱ πλούσιοι χορηγοῦντες τοῖς πένησι τὰ δέοντα πληροφοροῦσι τὰς ψυχὰς αὐτῶν. γίνονται οὖν ἀμφότεροι κοινωνοὶ τοῦ ἔργου τοῦ δικαίου. ταῦτα οὖν ὁ ποιῶν οὐκ ἐνκαταλειφθήσεται ὑπὸ τοῦ θεοῦ, ἀλλὰ ἔσται γεγραμμένος εἰς τὰς βίβλους τῶν ζώντων. μακάριοι οἱ ἔχοντες καὶ συνιέντες, ὅτι παρὰ τοῦ κυρίου πλουτίζονται· ὁ γὰρ συνίων τοῦτο δυνήσεται καὶ διακονῆσαί τι ἀγαθόν.
