to his father through the knowledge of God and through keeping his commandments. But if he says "now they have known," [it means] they learned from experience, and he says these things as befitting his humanity. Nevertheless, the Father also in the Old Testament appears saying to Abraham: "Now I know that you fear God." Nevertheless, the Son, by giving the Father's words to men, fully convinced the faithful that he had come forth from the substance of the Father. 335 Jo 17, 9- 11 He does not pray for the worldly, but for the saints, whom he says he has received from the Father, whom the Father ineffably brings to the Son while remaining again their master. And the saints and those who practice a life according to virtue are said to be of God, not as creation, but as men insofar as they do the things pleasing to him. Nevertheless, the Son says his own things are the Father's, and no less are the Father's things also his own. And he said these things, hastening to ascend into heaven. Wherefore, as the disciples were still remaining on earth for the sake of the proclamation, he says these things. 336 Jo 17, 11 Economically, he speaks as a man. "Just as," he says, "you have exalted me and I have the name of divinity, so also keep these in this name, so that, having been perfected in faith, they may be united just as I and you are one in substance, even if different according to hypostases." 337 Jo 17, 12 For being with them, he kept them both through teaching and through the supply of his own power, which is called the Father's. And he shows that he did not draw them by necessity, but guarded them as they were with him by choice. Wherefore also Judas was lost through voluntary perversity, that the scripture might be fulfilled which says: "He who eats my bread has lifted his heel against me," which prophecy was not coercive for Judas, but a reproof of his own wickedness. 338 Jo 17, 13 Since, having imparted divine power to them when he made them cast out demons, he filled them with joy, he asks that this joy be preserved for them. 339 Jo 17, 14-16 Since they accepted the evangelical teaching, the world hated them, that is, the wicked men who pursue worldly pleasures. Being outside of which, the saints are no longer of the world. He wishes therefore for them to be in the world for the time being for the evangelical ministry, but to be kept from the devil's plots. And because of the virtue of their soul and of their conduct, he calls them foreign to the world, as also himself because of his sinlessness. 340 Jo 17, 17 For the work of the evangelical life, it was necessary for the disciples to have the sanctification from the Father, confirming them by the word of truth. 341 Jo 17, 18-19 Just as he himself was sent economically as a man to preach the word of salvation, so also he, after the resurrection, sent the disciples to teach the world, having first sanctified them in himself; for through which he gave himself over to slaughter, he sanctifies himself (for "to sanctify" means to give as a sacrifice), offering himself as a sacrifice for the world, so that, having obtained the redemption in him, they might be sanctified in truth. 342 Jo 17, -21 For having imparted to them the holy glory, he has thereby made them partakers of his own dignities. And he continually mentions the manner of union, leading to an accurate comprehension of the most perfect understanding, through which they are led to perfect faith. Which the faithful, seeing, learned through the things themselves how great was the one who had given these things to his disciples, through which was also shown the good pleasure of the Father who loved them and perfected them through the grace in Christ. 343 Jo 17, -21 He makes mention not only of the disciples, but also of all those who would come to believe through the disciples, who also themselves have become one, having been joined to one another and to God through being joined to Christ. And this union does not happen according to substance or according to hypostasis, but according to the harmony of faith. And from this harmony the world also believed that Christ, by the good pleasure of the Father, was incarnate and preached the word of salvation; for this is what it is to be sent. 344 Jo 17, 24 He asks for them to be in heaven, so that beholding his glory they may enjoy this blessedness.

αὐτοῦ τῷ πατρὶ διὰ τῆς θεογνωσίας καὶ τοῦ τὰς ἐντολὰς αὐτοῦ τηρεῖν. εἰ δὲ λέγει νῦν ἔγνωκαν, τὸ τῆς πείρας ἔμαθον, ὡς πρέποντα δὲ τῇ ἀνθρωπότητι ταῦτα λέγει. ὅμως καὶ ὁ πατὴρ ἐν τῇ παλαιᾷ φαίνεται πρὸς τὸν Ἀβραὰμ λέγων· νῦν ἔγνων, ὅτι φοβῇ σὺ τὸν θεόν. ὅμως τὰ τοῦ πατρὸς ῥήματα ὁ υἱὸς εἰς τοὺς ἀνθρώπους διδοὺς ἐπληροφόρησε τοὺς πιστούς, ὅτι ἐκ τῆς οὐσίας ἦν τοῦ πατρὸς ἐξελθών. 335 Jo 17, 9- 11 Οὐ περὶ τῶν κοσμικῶν εὔχεται, ἀλλὰ περὶ τῶν ἁγίων, οὓς λέγει εἰλη φέναι παρὰ τοῦ πατρός, οὓς ἀρρήτως ὁ πατὴρ προσάγων τῷ υἱῷ μένει πάλιν ὢν δεσπότης αὐτῶν. οἱ δὲ ἅγιοι καὶ τὸν κατ' ἀρετὴν ἀσκοῦντες βίον τοῦ θεοῦ λέγονται οὐ δημιούργημα, ἀλλὰ ἄνθρωποι καθὸ τὰ ἀρεστὰ αὐτῷ ποιοῦσιν. ὅμως τὰ ἑαυτοῦ λέγει ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ πατρός, οὐδὲν δὲ ἧττον καὶ τὰ τοῦ πατρὸς ἴδια. ταῦτα δὲ ἔλεγεν ἐπειγόμενος εἰς οὐρανὸν ἀνελθεῖν. διὸ ὡς ἔτι μενόντων τῶν μαθητῶν ἐπὶ γῆς διὰ τὸ κήρυγμά φησι ταῦτα. 336 Jo 17, 11 Οἰκονομικῶς ὡς ἄνθρωπος λαλεῖ. ὥσπερ, φησίν, ἐμὲ ὑπερυψώσας καὶ ἔχω τὸ τῆς θεότητος ὄνομα, οὕτω καὶ τούτους διατήρηJoν ἐν τούτῳ τῷ ὀνόματι, ἵνα τῇ πίστει τελειωθέντες ἑνωθῶσι καθὼς κἀγὼ καὶ σὺ ἕν ἐσμεν τῇ οὐσίᾳ, εἰ καὶ διάφοροι κατὰ τὰς ὑποστάσεις. 337 Jo 17, 12 Συνὼν γὰρ αὐτοῖς ἐτήρει αὐτοὺς διά τε τῆς διδασκαλίας καὶ διὰ τῆς ἐπιχορηγίας τῆς ἑαυτοῦ δυνάμεως ἥτις λέγεται τοῦ πατρός. δείκνυσι δέ, ὅτι οὐκ ἀνάγκῃ αὐτοὺς εἷλκεν, ἀλλὰ προαιρέσει συνόντας ἐφύλασσε. διὸ καὶ Ἰούδας δι' ἑκούσιον δυστροπίαν ἀπώλετο, ἵνα πληρωθῇ ἡ γραφὴ λέγουσα· ὁ ἐσθίων ἄρτους μου, ἐμεγάλυνεν ἐπ' ἐμὲ πτερνισμόν, ἥτις πρόρρησις οὐκ ἀν αγκαστικὴ γέγονε τῷ Ἰούδᾳ, ἀλλὰ ἔλεγχος τῆς αὐτοῦ κακίας. 338 Jo 17, 13 Ἐπειδὴ μεταδοὺς αὐτοῖς θείας δυνάμεως, ὅτε ἐποίησεν αὐτοὺς ἐκβάλλειν τὰ δαιμόνια, χαρᾶς ἐπλήρωσεν αὐτούς, ταύτην αὐτοῖς διατηρηθῆναι αἰτεῖ τὴν χαράν. 339 Jo 17, 14-16 Ἐπειδὴ παρεδέξαντο τὴν εὐαγγελικὴν διδασκαλίαν, ἐμίσησεν αὐτοὺς ὁ κόσμος, τοῦτ' ἔστιν οἱ πονηροὶ ἄνθρωποι, οἱ τὰς κοσμικὰς ἡδονὰς ποιοῦντες. ὧν ἔξω ὄντες οἱ ἅγιοι οὐκέτι ἐκ τοῦ κόσμου εἰσίν. θέλει οὖν τέως ἐν τῷ κόσμῳ αὐτοὺς εἶναι διὰ τὴν εὐαγγελικὴν διακονίαν, διατηρεῖσθαι δὲ ἐκ τῶν διαβολικῶν ἐπιβουλῶν. διὰ τὸ ἐνάρετον δὲ τῆς ψυχῆς αὐτῶν καὶ τῆς πολιτείας ἀλλοτρίους αὐτοὺς λέγει τοῦ κόσμου ὡς καὶ ἑαυτὸν διὰ τὸ ἀναμάρτητον. 340 Jo 17, 17 Ἔδει πρὸς ἐργασίαν τῆς εὐαγγελικῆς πολιτείας τοῖς μαθηταῖς τοῦ ἁγια σμοῦ τοῦ ἐκ πατρὸς βεβαιοῦντος αὐτοὺς τῷ λόγῳ τῆς ἀληθείας. 341 Jo 17, 18-19 Ὥσπερ αὐτὸς οἰκονομικῶς ὡς ἄνθρωπος ἀπεστάλη κηρῦξαι τὸν σωτήριον λόγον, οὕτω καὶ αὐτὸς μετὰ τὴν ἀνάστασιν ἀπέστειλε τοὺς μαθητὰς διδάξοντας τὴν οἰκουμένην προαγιάσας αὐτοὺς ἐν ἑαυτῷ· δι' ὧν γὰρ ἑαυτὸν ἐπέδωκεν εἰς σφαγήν, ἁγιάζει ἑαυτόν (ἁγιάσαι γὰρ λέγεται τὸ εἰς θυσίαν δοῦναι), θυσίαν ἑαυτὸν προσφέρων ὑπὲρ τοῦ κόσμου, ἵνα τυχόντες τῆς ἐν αὐτῷ ἀπολυτρώσεως ὦσιν ἡγιασμένοι ἐν ἀληθείᾳ. 342 Jo 17, -21 Μεταδοὺς γὰρ αὐτοῖς τῆς ἁγίας δόξης καὶ ἰδίας κοινωνοὺς αὐτοὺς ἐν τούτῳ πεποίηκε τῶν ἀξιωμάτων. συνεχῶς δὲ τοῦ τῆς ἑνώσεως μέμνηται τρόπου εἰς ἀκριβῆ ἄγων τελειοτάτης νοήσεως κατάληψιν, δι' ἧς εἰς τελείαν ἄγονται πίστιν. ἣν ὁρῶντες οἱ πιστοὶ δι' αὐτῶν ἐμάνθανον τῶν πραγμάτων, ὅJoς ἦν ὁ ταῦτα δεδωκὼς τοῖς αὐτοῦ μαθηταῖς, δι' ὧν ἐδείκνυτο καὶ ἡ τοῦ πατρὸς εὐδοκία ἀγαπήσαντος αὐτοὺς καὶ τελειώσαντος διὰ τῆς ἐν Χριστῷ χάριτος. 343 Jo 17, -21 Οὐ μόνον τῶν μαθητῶν, ἀλλὰ καὶ πάντων μνημονεύει τῶν πιστεύειν μελλόντων διὰ τῶν μαθητῶν, οἵτινες καὶ αὐτοὶ ἓν γεγόνασι συναφθέντες ἑαυτοῖς τε καὶ τῷ θεῷ διὰ τοῦ συναφθῆναι τῷ Χριστῷ. αὕτη δὲ ἡ ἕνωσις οὐ κατ' οὐσίαν γίνεται ἢ καθ' ὑπόστασιν, ἀλλὰ κατὰ τὴν τῆς πίστεως συμφωνίαν. ἐκ ταύτης δὲ τῆς συμφωνίας καὶ ὁ κόσμος ἐπίστευσεν, ὅτι ὁ Χριστὸς εὐδοκίᾳ τοῦ πατρὸς ἐσαρκώθη καὶ ἐκήρυξεν τὸν λόγον τὸν σωτήριον· τοῦτο γάρ ἐστι τὸ ἀποστα λῆναι. 344 Jo 17, 24 Αἰτεῖ αὐτοὺς ἐν οὐρανῷ εἶναι, ἵνα θεωροῦντες αὐτοῦ τὴν δόξαν ἀπο λαύωσι τῆς μακαριότητος ταύτης.
