Thus the beginning of death came to travel into this world until this very day upon the whole race of men. But God, being merciful and wishing to provide an occasion for repentance and confession to Cain, just as also to Adam, said: "Where is Abel your brother?" But Cain answered God disobediently, saying: "I do not know; am I my brother's keeper?" Thus God, being angered with him, said: "What is this that you have done? The voice of your brother's blood cries to me from the ground. And now you are cursed from the earth, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother's blood from your hand; you shall be a groaner and a trembler on the earth." For which reason, from that time, the earth, being afraid, no longer accepts the blood of man, nor even of any animal; from which it is clear that it is not the cause, but the man who transgressed. Cain, therefore, also had a son whose name was Enoch. And he built a city, which he named after the name of his son, Enoch. From that time came the beginning of the building of cities, and this before the flood, not as Homer falsely says: "For not yet was the city of mortal men inhabited." And to Enoch was born a son named Gaidad; he begot the one called Meel, and Meel begot Methuselah, and Methuselah begot Lamech. And Lamech took for himself two wives, whose names were Adah and Zillah. From that time came the beginning of polygamy, but also of music. For to Lamech were born three sons, Obel, Jubal, Thobel. And Obel became a man who dwelt in tents, a cattle-breeder, but Jubal is he who introduced the psaltery and harp, and Thobel became a hammerer, a smith of bronze and iron. Up to this point, therefore, the seed of Cain had its catalog; and for the rest, his genealogical seed has passed into oblivion, because he murdered his brother. But in the place of Abel, God granted Eve to conceive and bear a son, who is called Seth; from whom the rest of the race of men proceeds to this very day. And for those who are willing and studious, it is easy to demonstrate concerning all the generations through the holy scriptures. For indeed, an account has already been given by us in part in another discourse, as we have said above, the order of the genealogy in the first book concerning histories. But all these things the Holy Spirit teaches us, through Moses and the other prophets, so that the writings concerning us, the God-fearing, happen to be more ancient, and indeed are also shown to be truer than all historians and poets. But indeed, concerning music, some have talked nonsense that Apollo was its inventor, while others say that Orpheus invented music from the sweet song of birds. But their account is shown to be empty and vain; for these men came into being many years after the flood. And concerning Noah, who is called by some Deucalion, the narrative has been given by us in the book which we mentioned before, in which, if you wish, also
