that during the captivity he worshipped Artemis in Susa and escaped the destruction of death in the time of King Darius; so that all his claims are false and vain. This man, then, as was said above, is connected with the aforementioned heresy called that of the Ossaeans, of which remnants still exist even to this day in the same land of Nabataea, which is also Peraea, near Moabitis; which race is now called Sampsaeans. They pretend to call this a revealed power, because *El* is called power, and *Xai* covered. But the whole insolence of his practice was exposed and fell into great shame among those able to understand and discern the truth *. for even to this day in the time of Constantius and the present emperors *. For until the time of Constantius, from the family of this Elxai, a certain Marthous and Marthana, two sisters, were worshipped in their own country as goddesses, because they were supposedly from the seed of the aforementioned Elxai. Marthous died a short time ago, but Marthana still existed until now. And their spittle and the other filth from their bodies were carried away by the deceived heretics in that country, supposedly as a remedy against diseases. However, they were not effective; but the deceived is always pompous and ready for deception; for wickedness is blind and error is without understanding. 3. And how long shall I waste time speaking about this sorcerer, and all the things he falsified against the truth, first teaching denial of God and hypocrisy, to partake in the abominable sacrifices of idolatry 1.220 and deceiving his hearers to deny their own faith with the mouth, and claiming to have no sin; so that their passion is incurable and cannot be corrected. For if the mouth which confesses the truth is prepared for falsehood, could anyone believe that their heart is not deceived? since the divine word expressly proclaims, teaching in the Holy Spirit, that 'with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation'. But again, he pretends to confess Christ by name, saying that Christ is the great king; yet I have not at all comprehended from his deceitful and counterfeit composition of the book of his nonsense whether he was discoursing about our Lord Jesus Christ; for he does not define this, but simply says Christ, as if, from what we have understood, he means or expects some other. For he forbids praying towards the east, saying one must not face that way, but to have one's face towards Jerusalem from all parts, those from the east facing west towards Jerusalem, those from the west facing east towards the same, those from the north facing south, and from the south facing north, so that from every direction the face is directly towards Jerusalem. And see the madness of the impostor. For he anathematizes sacrifices and sacred rites as being alien to God and as never having been offered at all to God by the fathers or by the law, and he says one must pray there towards Jerusalem, where the altar and the sacrifices were, he who denies meat-eating among the Jews and the other things and the altar and the fire as alien to God, and water 1.221 to be on the right, but fire to be alien, saying in these words: 'Children, do not go towards the form of fire, for you are deceived; for such a thing is deception. For you see, he says, that it is very near and is from afar; do not go towards its form, but rather go to the voice of the water.' And many are his fables. 4. Then he describes Christ as a certain power, whose measurements he also indicates,
