But he says he has received as a man. By mentioning the one who gave and the one who received, he reveals his own hypostasis and that of the Father. And by saying that he was loved by the Father before the world, he refutes the error of those who say that he took his beginning from the virgin Mary. 345 Jo 17, 25 While the unbelievers in the world by their own intention were unwilling through the evangelical teaching to know God in a way as he himself knows the Father, he nevertheless also bears witness to the disciples' knowledge of knowing that he had come forth from the Father. 346 Jo 17, 26 As he himself revealed to them the knowledge of the Father, he says this as they also come to know more through progress, so that they may be loved accordingly by God, as much as it is fitting for humans to be loved by God.

347 Jo 18, 1-2 Foreseeing Judas coming to arrest him

after he said these things, he went into the garden, where he often gathered with his disciples as in a private place and taught them the more mystical of the teachings. Therefore Judas also knew the place. 348 Jo 18, 3 Judas came to arrest the teacher, having become a traitor instead of a disciple. 349 Jo 18, 4-6 The Lord went to meet them, in order to bring to fulfillment the things preordained for him and to show the voluntary nature of his endurance of the passion and the authority of his divinity; for, having made himself unrecognized at first, although Judas was present and there were sufficient lights, he again revealed himself, saying, "I am he," and showing that he who by a word alone cast them on their backs was able, if he had wished, to escape; and he bore with forbearance the plotters and those who came against him. 350 Jo 18, 8-9 As a good father caring for his children, he keeps them out of the temptations because of their weakness and their still being infants and so that he might fulfill the word which he spoke, but he gives himself up. 351 Jo 18, 10-11 Through what Peter did, it was clear that he wanted to die for his master, since because he had used a sword and cut off the servant's ear, he would not even so have stopped, if he had not been prevented by Christ. 352 Jo 18, 11 He shows that having judged it right to endure the predestined death by the good pleasure of the Father, he has given himself over. 353 Jo 18, 12-14 By binding him they fulfilled the saying in Isaiah that says, "Let us bind the righteous one." But the wicked chief priests sent Jesus from house to house, seeking by this to triumph over him. Caiaphas, then, as one plotting against Christ, said that he must be killed; but God ordained his unjust counsel to be for the salvation of all. 354 Jo 18, 15 Peter alone followed because of his disposition toward the teacher, and the other one, since he was known to the high priest. Therefore he also entered with Jesus. 355 Jo 18, 16 Because of his acquaintance with the high priest, Peter dared to enter with John. 356 Jo 18, 17 He who a little before had arrayed himself against such a crowd was changed and turned to denial. 357 Jo 18, 18 As a kind of sign he mentions that at such a time there was such cold in Palestine that people were warming themselves by a charcoal fire. 358 Jo 18, 19 When almost everyone, so to speak, in Judea and Jerusalem had heard his teaching, this man alone pretends to be ignorant, although he had heard of the signs which he performed. 359 Jo 18, -21 He refutes him for pretending ignorance, since he said he was ignorant of the things spoken in the temple; for it was possible for him, even if he had not heard, to learn at least by asking those who had heard. From his saying, therefore, that "I have spoken all things openly," he shows that the things said by some to be his secret teachings are not to be accepted. 360 Jo 18, 22-23 That he bore nobly and with forbearance even the insults inflicted by lowly men shows his unsurpassable long-suffering. 361 Jo 18, 23 The saying is not of one who is angry, but of one who is justifying himself. And these things were perhaps done by some wicked demon through the servant, provoking him through the excess to indignation. 362 Jo 18, 24-25 They sent him as a prisoner from place to place, thinking to insult him the more.

εἰληφέναι δὲ λέγει ὡς ἄνθρωπος. δι' ὧν δὲ τὸν δεδωκότα καὶ τὸν λαβόντα λέγει, τὰς ἑαυτοῦ καὶ τοῦ πατρὸς ὑποστάσεις δηλοῖ. λέγων δὲ πρὸ κόσμου ἠγαπῆσθαι παρὰ τοῦ πατρὸς ἐλέγχει τὴν πλάνην τῶν λεγόντων ἀρχὴν αὐτὸν εἰληφέναι ἐκ τῆς παρθένου Μαρίας. 345 Jo 17, 25 Τῶν ἐν τῷ βίῳ ἀπίστων οἰκείᾳ προθέσει οὐ θελησάντων διὰ τῆς εὐαγγε λικῆς παιδείας ἐπιγνῶναι τὸν θεὸν τρόπον τινὰ ὡς αὐτὸς γινώσκων τὸν πατέρα οὐ μὴν ἀλλὰ καὶ τῶν μαθητῶν μαρτυρεῖ τὴν γνῶσιν τοῦ εἰδέναι, ὅτι ἐκ τοῦ πατρὸς ἦν ἐξελθών. 346 Jo 17, 26 Ὡς αὐτὸς ἀποκαλύψας αὐτοῖς τὴν εἰς τὸν πατέρα γνῶσιν τοῦτό φησιν ὡς καὶ διὰ προκοπῆς ἐπὶ πλεῖον γινώσκοντας, ἵνα ἀγαπηθῶσιν ἀναλόγως παρά Joυ, ὅJoν χρὴ ἀνθρώπους ἀγαπηθῆναι ἐκ θεοῦ.

μετὰ τὸ εἰπεῖν ταῦτα ἀπῆλθεν εἰς τὸν κῆπον, ὅπου πολλάκις συναχθεὶς μετὰ τῶν μαθητῶν ὡς ἐν ἰδιάζοντι τόπῳ ἐδίδασκεν αὐτοὺς τὰ μυστικώτερα τῶν μαθημάτων. διὸ καὶ ὁ Ἰούδας ᾔδει τὸν τόπον. 348 Jo 18, 3 Ἦλθεν ὁ Ἰούδας συλλαβεῖν τὸν διδάσκαλον προδότης ἀντὶ μαθητοῦ γεγονώς. 349 Jo 18, 4-6 Ἀπήντα τούτοις ὁ κύριος, ἵνα εἰς πέρας ἀγάγῃ τὰ προορισθέντα αὐτῷ καὶ δείξῃ τὸ ἑκούσιον τῆς τοῦ πάθους ὑπομονῆς καὶ τῆς θεότητος τὴν ἐξουσίαν· ποιήσας γὰρ ἑαυτὸν ἄγνωστον τὴν ἀρχὴν καίπερ παρόντος τοῦ Ἰούδα καὶ φώτων ὄντων ἱκανῶν πάλιν ἐφανέρωσεν ἑαυτὸν λέγων ἐγώ εἰμι καὶ δείξας, ὅτι ὁ μόνῳ λόγῳ ῥίψας ὑπτίους δυνατὸς ἦν, εἰ ἤθελεν, ἀνελθεῖν καὶ τοὺς ἐπιβουλεύ οντας ἀνεξικάκως ἔφερε τοὺς ἐπελθόντας. 350 Jo 18, 8-9 Ὡς πατὴρ ἀγαθὸς προιστάμενος τέκνων ἐκείνους μὲν ἔξω ποιεῖται τῶν πειρασμῶν διὰ τὸ ἀσθενὲς αὐτῶν καὶ ἔτι νηπιῶδες καὶ ἵνα πληρώσῃ τὸν λόγον, ὃν εἶπεν, ἑαυτὸν δὲ προδίδωσιν. 351 Jo 18, 10-11 ∆ι' ὧν ἐποίησεν ὁ Πέτρος, δῆλος ἦν θέλων ὑπεραποθανεῖν τοῦ δεσπότου, ἐπεὶ διότι μαχαίρᾳ ἐκέχρητο καὶ τὸ οὖς κόψας τοῦ οἰκέτου οὐδὲ οὕτως ἐπαύετο, εἰ μὴ ἐκωλύθη ὑπὸ τοῦ Χριστοῦ. 352 Jo 18, 11 ∆είκνυσιν, ὅτι τὸν προορισθέντα θάνατον εὐδοκίᾳ πατρὸς κρίνας ὑπο μεῖναι ἑαυτὸν ἐκδέδωκεν. 353 Jo 18, 12-14 ∆ήσαντες αὐτὸν ἐπλήρωσαν τὸ ἐν τῷ Ἠσαΐᾳ ῥητὸν τὸ φάσκον δήσωμεν τὸν δίκαιον. οἱ δὲ πονηροὶ ἀρχιερεῖς ἀπὸ οἰκίας εἰς οἰκίαν ἔπεμπον τὸν ἸηJoῦν διὰ τούτου αὐτὸν ζητοῦντες θριαμβεῦσαι. ὁ μὲν οὖν Καϊαφᾶς ὡς ἐπιβουλεύων τῷ Χριστῷ ἔλεγε δεῖν αὐτὸν ἀναιρεθῆναι· ὁ δὲ θεὸς τὴν ἄδικον ἐκείνου βουλὴν ὑπὲρ σωτηρίας τοῦ παντὸς ᾠκονόμησε γενέσθαι. 354 Jo 18, 15 Ὁ Πέτρος μόνος ἠκολούθησε διὰ τὴν πρὸς τὸν διδάσκαλον διάθεσιν καὶ ὁ ἄλλος, ἐπειδὴ γνωστὸς ἦν τῷ ἀρχιερεῖ. διὸ καὶ συνεισῆλθε τῷ ἸηJoῦ. 355 Jo 18, 16 ∆ιὰ τὴν πρὸς τὸν ἀρχιερέα γνῶσιν ἐθάρρησεν ὁ Πέτρος συνεισελθεῖν τῷ Ἰωάννῃ. 356 Jo 18, 17 Ὁ πρὸ μικροῦ πρὸς τοJoῦτον πλῆθος παραταξάμενος μετεβλήθη καὶ πρὸς ἄρνησιν ἐτράπη. 357 Jo 18, 18 Ὡς ἀντὶ σημείου λέγει τὸ ἐν τοιούτῳ καιρῷ τοJoῦτον γενέσθαι ψῦχος ἐν τῇ Παλαιστίνῃ ὡς ὑπὸ ἀνθρακιὰν θερμαίνεσθαι. 358 Jo 18, 19 Πάντων σχεδὸν εἰπεῖν τῶν ἐν Ἰουδαίᾳ καὶ Ἰερουσαλὴμ ἀκουσάντων αὐτοῦ τῆς διδασκαλίας μόνος ἀγνοεῖν προσποιεῖται οὗτος, καίπερ ἀκούσας ἃ ἐποίησε σημεῖα. 359 Jo 18, -21 Ἐλέγχει αὐτὸν ἄγνοιαν προσποιούμενον, ἐπείπερ τὰ ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ λαλη θέντα ἔλεγεν ἀγνοεῖν· ἐξῆν γὰρ αὐτῷ, εἰ καὶ μὴ ἠκηκόει, ἀλλ' οὖν τοὺς ἀκού σαντας ἐρωτήσας μαθεῖν. ἐξ ὧν οὖν εἶπεν, ὅτι φανερῶς πάντα εἶπον, δείκνυσιν, ὅτι τὰ λεγόμενα αὐτοῦ παρά τισιν ἀπόκρυφα οὐκ εἰσὶ δεκτά. 360 Jo 18, 22-23 Τὸ καὶ τὰς παρὰ τῶν εὐτελῶν ἀνθρώπων ἐπαγομένας ὕβρεις γενναίως καὶ ἀνεξικάκως φέρειν τὴν ἀνυπέρβλητον αὐτοῦ δείκνυσι μακροθυμίαν. 361 Jo 18, 23 Οὐκ ὀργιζομένου ἐστὶ τὸ ῥῆμα, ἀλλὰ δικαιολογουμένου. ταῦτα δὲ ἴσως ἀπό τινος σκαιοῦ δαίμονος ἐπράττετο διὰ τοῦ ὑπηρέτου ἐξερεθίζοντος αὐτὸν διὰ τὴν ὑπερβολὴν εἰς ἀγανάκτησιν. 362 Jo 18, 24-25 Ἀπὸ τόπου εἰς τόπον ἔπεμπον δεσμώτην ἐπὶ πλεῖον αὐτὸν ὑβρίζειν νομί ζοντες.
