children, Valentinian called the younger, whom the army after the death of his father acclaimed emperor, and three daughters, Justa, Grata, Galla, whom the great Theodosius married as his second wife, from whom Placidia was born to him; for Arcadius and Honorius were Theodosius' children from Placilla, his first wife. He also wrote a lawless law that one wishing to have two wives, like him, should not be prevented. And the impious Valens 57 had two daughters, Anastasia and Carossa, in whose names he also built two baths and the aqueduct, which until now is called the Valentinian. But some say that Domnica, the wife of Valens, persuaded him to embrace Arianism so fervently. Others relate that after becoming emperor, having been baptized by Eudoxius, he confirmed to him with an oath during the baptism itself to hold the views of Arius and not to accept the homoousion, and thus both the unholy men initiated countless persecutions against the orthodox. And they send to Liberius of Rome Eustathius the Armenian and Silvanus of Tarsus and Theophilus of Castabala, promising through them to accept the homoousion. These men gave to Liberius a written statement in favor of the homoousion, confessing that they turned away from every heresy opposing the synod of Nicaea; whom Liberius received and entered into communion with, writing to those of the East, testifying to their orthodoxy. And Eudoxius again induced Valens to order the local governors to exile all the bishops who had been exiled by Constantius and recalled by Ju58lian and Jovian. Then Athanasius voluntarily left Alexandria, as the people did not permit the governor to expel him, and for a long time he was hidden in his father's tomb; but later Valens, for fear of a revolt of the Alexandrians, wrote for Athanasius to return. And Eunomius separated from the communion of Eudoxius because Eudoxius did not hold communion with Aetius, the teacher of Eunomius. For although both were of the same mind, yet because Aetius was hated by all, Eudoxius turned away from him, not being ashamed to openly turn away from his own doctrines as impious. For Eunomius became a secretary of the godless Aetius, having learned sophistic arguments, from which he forsooth boasted, being altogether uninitiated in the divine scriptures, as his seven volumes especially show. And the people of Cyzicus drove out Eunomius as a heretic and a blasphemer. But he went and was united with Eudoxius. And he was terribly blasphemous, daring to say that God knows nothing more about His own substance than we do. And more than the pagan persecution happened to the orthodox under the impious Valens and Eudoxius. And at this time, when Eudoxius died, the Arians put forward Demophilus as bishop, but the orthodox a certain Evagrius, whom the holy Eustathius of Antioch ordained, living secretly in Constantinople, having returned from exile under Jovian; and not finding him alive in the city, he was in hiding. And Valens, hearing of the ordination of Evagrius while staying in Marcianopolis, exiled the holy Eustathius to Bizye, and having expelled Evagrius from the city, to Demophilus the

Εὐνόμιος γὰρ ὑπογραφεὺς γέγονε τοῦ ἀθέου Ἀετίου σοφιστικοὺς λόγους μαθών, ἐξ ὧν δῆθεν ἐκόμπαζεν, τῶν θείων γραφῶν ἀμύητος ὢν πάντη, ὡς δηλοῦσι μάλιστα οἱ ἑπτὰ αὐτοῦ τόμοι. οἱ δὲ Κυζικηνοὶ ἐδίωξαν Εὐνόμιον ὡς αἱρετικὸν καὶ βλάσφημον. οὗτος δὲ ἐλθὼν ἡνώθη Εὐδοξίῳ. δεινῶς δὲ ἦν βλάσφημος τολμῶν λέγειν, ὅτι ὁ θεὸς περὶ τῆς ἰδίας οὐσίας οὐδὲν οἶδε πλέον ἡμῶν. ἑλληνικοῦ δὲ διωγμοῦ πλείονα συνέβη τοῖς ὀρθοδόξοις ἐπὶ Οὐάλεντος καὶ Εὐδοξίου τῶν ἀσεβῶν. Τούτῳ δὲ τῷ χρόνῳ Εὐδοξίου τελευτήσαντος ∆ημόφιλον Ἀρειανοὶ προεβάλοντο ἐπίσκοπον, οἱ δὲ ὀρθόδοξοι Εὐάγριόν τινα, ὃν ἐχειροτόνησεν Εὐστάθιος ὁ ἱερὸς Ἀντιοχείας λαθραίως διάγων ἐν Κωνσταντινουπόλει, ἐπανελθὼν ἐκ τῆς ἐξορίας ἐπὶ Ἰουβιανοῦ· μὴ εὑρὼν δὲ αὐτὸν ζῶντα ἐν τῇ πόλει ἐκρύπτετο. τὴν δὲ Εὐαγρίου χειροτονίαν ἀκούσας Οὐάλης ἐν Μαρκιανουπόλει διάγων Εὐστάθιον μὲν τὸν ἱερὸν εἰς Βιζύην ἐξώρισεν, Εὐάγριον δὲ τῆς πόλεως ἐκβαλὼν ∆ημοφίλῳ τὰς
