of faith in him and of the power from him no one can do anything, which the Father does not cultivate as not needing care, but the branches. And the branches of Christ are the faithful, as united to him through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit and having become «partakers of the divine nature,» who also receive care from the Father. But Christ as the root holds the faithful together and gives them life through the Holy Spirit; for salvation has not come from one person, but from the divine Trinity. 510 {3Jο 15, 2}3The faithful one is a branch of the spiritual vine, which is Christ, and he is not benefited from faith alone, but there is also need of virtuous works which come about through cleansings. 511 {3Jο 15, 2}3Those who cling «to the Lord» and do not conduct themselves worthily of him are punished, but those living piously bear much fruit. if we have faith, but do not have works, as dead and fruitless branches he casts out
cutting off. Or, the fruitless branches are the Jews. 512 {3Jο 15, 2-3}3He says these things concerning the trials which they were about to endure, which made them more approved. Those who live piously bear much fruit. 513 {3Jο 15, 4}3Even if one is united to Christ through sanctification in the spirit, yet he needs also to hold to perfect love and to follow him; for he who is cut off from Christ for not having perfect sanctification and love, cannot do anything good. 514 {3Jο 15, 4}3Because only those who are fastened to him can bear fruit, he calls himself a vine, as they are empowered by him. 515 {3Jο 15, 5}3And he himself, not less than the
Father, contributes to the care of the disciples. 517 {3Jο 15, 7-8}3 517Instead of: the Father rejoices, when you remain in me. Through what you do, the Father is praised. 518 {3Jο 15, 8}3This makes them disciples of Christ and to bear much fruit: to serve God spiritually, running past the letter. 519 {3Jο 15, 9}3It is in our power to love God; for our free will is not forced. 5 {3Jο 15, 10}3For it is not only necessary
to believe, but also to do the commandments. 521 {3Jο 15, 12-13}3As teacher of the world, Christ hands these things down to them, that love is the chief of the virtues, his commandment to die for one's friends and to love friends more than oneself. 522 {3Jο 15, 13}3He shows that his departure was not of hatred, but of love; for I die for your sake. 523 {3Jο 15, 14}3Through virtue, having surpassed the measure of servants, they have become friends. And he brings the servants up to glory beyond nature, if they willingly do the things pleasing to God. 524 {3Jο 15, 15}3Instead of: as many things as they needed to hear; but what he says enigmatically is this, that I have not told you the secrets as to servants, but as to friends and partakers of good things. 525 {3Jο 15, 16}3The Son <instead> of the Father gives <what is> asked, so that we may know that the Son was not less than the Father. 527 {3Jο 15, 18}3This is for our sake; for you suffer this on account of me. Therefore do not grieve nor be displeased; for you are not greater than me. 528 {3Jο 15, 18}3If the wicked, that is, the world, loved you, it would be clear that you too were wicked. 529 {3Jο 15, 19}3He who despises the things of the world, even if he is of the world, is said not to be of the world. 530 {3Jο 15, }3If I suffered all things for the servants, when you, the servants, suffer similar things for the master, you ought not to take it hard. If you suffer things similar to mine, do not be troubled; for thus you become partakers of my sufferings. And if they do this to my insult, yet through me they also insult the Father. 531 {3Jο 15, }3Nothing, he says, have I omitted of the things contributing to the benefit of the Jews, not in words, not in works, the likes of which no one has seen. 532 {3Jο 15, 25}3And through the prophet he showed that the hatred against him was irrational. The wickedness of the Jews fulfilled what was prophesied. 533 {3Jο 16, 1}3Because you know that as
