we say, that many of the things that grow from the earth have the power of seeds in their base and root. Just as the reed, after its annual growth, sends forth from its root a shoot, which has the nature of a seed, for the future. And countless other things do this, as many as spread through the earth possess their succession in their roots. So that it is truer than anything that, for each of the growing things, there is either a seed, or some seminal power exists within it. And this is the meaning of, According to its kind. For the shoot of the reed does not produce an olive tree, but from a reed comes another reed, and from seeds sprout things kindred to those that were sown. And thus that which was put forth by the earth in the first creation, is preserved until now, its kind being kept by the sequence of succession. Let the earth bring forth. Consider for me, from a small voice and a command so brief, the frozen and barren earth suddenly travailing and being moved to fruitfulness, as if casting off some sad and mournful garment, putting on a brighter one and rejoicing in its proper adornments, and putting forth the countless kinds of growing things. I wish for the wonder of creation to be more firmly established in you, so that wherever you may be found, and whatever kind of growing thing you may stand beside, you may receive a clear reminder of the Creator. First then, whenever you see a blade of grass and a flower, come to the thought of human nature, remembering the image of the wise Isaiah, that "All flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass." For the short duration of life, and the briefly joyful and cheerful aspect of human prosperity, has obtained from the prophet a most fitting image. Today healthy in body, fattened by luxury, having a blooming complexion from the prime of his age, vigorous and robust, and irresistible in his impulse; tomorrow this same man is pitiable, either withered by time, or broken down by sickness. A certain man is admired for the abundance of his wealth; and a crowd of flatterers is around him; a bodyguard of feigned friends cultivating his favor; a crowd of relatives, and these too with pretense; a countless swarm of followers, both those who attend him for meals and for their needs, whom, going forth and returning again, he drags behind him, an object of envy to those who meet him. Add to the wealth also some political power, or even honors from kings; or the care of nations; or leadership of armies; the herald shouting loudly before him; the lictors on this side and that inflicting blows, inspiring the greatest terror in their subjects; the confiscations; the abductions; the prisons, from which an unbearable fear is gathered from those under his power. And what after this? A single night, or one fever, or pleurisy, or pneumonia, snatches the man away from mankind and is gone, suddenly stripping bare the whole stage about him, and that glory was proven to be like a dream. Therefore the prophet has achieved the comparison of human glory to the most feeble flower. 5.3 Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed after its kind and after its likeness. Even now the order of growing things testifies to the first ordering. For the budding precedes every herb and every grass. For whether something is given forth from a root, from the shoot below, like the crocus and the couch-grass, it must sprout and emerge outside; or whether from a seed, even so it is necessary first to have a budding, then to become an herb, then green grass, then the fruit maturing on an already dry and thick stalk. Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb. When the seed falls into the earth which has a due measure of moisture and heat, becoming spongy and porous, having laid hold of the surrounding earth, it draws to itself its own and kindred parts. And the finest particles of the earth, falling into the pores and slipping around it, further widen its mass

Ὥσπερ ὁ κάλαμος, μετὰ τὴν ἐπέτειον αὔξησιν, ἀπὸ τῆς ῥίζης ἀφίησί τινα προβολὴν, σπέρματος λόγον ἔχουσαν, πρὸς τὸ μέλλον. Τοῦτο δὲ ποιεῖ καὶ ἄλλα μυρία, ὅσα διὰ γῆς νεμόμενα ἐν ταῖς ῥίζαις τὴν διαδοχὴν κέκτηται. Ὥστε παντός ἐστιν ἀληθέστερον τὸ, ἑκάστῳ τῶν φυομένων ἢ σπέρμα εἶναι, ἢ δύναμίν τινα σπερματικὴν ἐνυπάρχειν. Καὶ τοῦτό ἐστι τὸ, Κατὰ γένος. Οὐ γὰρ ἡ προβολὴ τοῦ καλά μου ἐλαίας ἐστὶ ποιητικὴ, ἀλλὰ ἐκ καλάμου μὲν ἕτερος κάλαμος, ἐκ δὲ τῶν σπερμάτων τὰ συγγενῆ τοῖς καταβληθεῖσιν ἀποβλαστάνει. Καὶ οὕτω τὸ ἐν τῇ πρώτῃ γενέσει προβληθὲν παρὰ τῆς γῆς, μέχρι νῦν διασώζεται, τῇ ἀκολουθίᾳ τῆς διαδοχῆς φυλασσομένου τοῦ γένους. Βλαστησάτω ἡ γῆ. Νόησόν μοι ἐκ μικρᾶς φωνῆς, καὶ προστάγματος οὕτω βραχέος, τὴν κατεψυγμένην καὶ ἄγονον ὠδίνουσαν ἀθρόως καὶ πρὸς καρπογονίαν συγκινουμένην, ὥσπερ τινὰ σκυθρωπὴν καὶ πενθήρη ἀπορρίψασαν περιβολὴν, μεταμφιεννυμένην τὴν φαιδροτέραν καὶ τοῖς οἰκείοις κόσμοις ἀγαλλομένην, καὶ τὰ μυρία γένη τῶν φυομένων προβάλλουσαν. Βούλομαί σοι σφοδρότερον τῆς κτίσεως ἐνιδρυνθῆναι τὸ θαῦμα, ἵν' ὅπου περ ἂν εὑρεθῇς, καὶ ὁποίῳ δήποτε γένει τῶν φυομένων παραστῇς, ἐναργῆ λαμβάνῃς τοῦ ποιήσαντος τὴν ὑπόμνησιν. Πρῶτον μὲν οὖν ὅταν ἴδῃς βοτάνην χόρτου καὶ ἄνθος, εἰς ἔννοιαν ἔρχου τῆς ἀνθρωπίνης φύσεως, μεμνημένος τῆς εἰκόνος τοῦ σοφοῦ Ἡσαΐου, ὅτι Πᾶσα σὰρξ ὡς χόρτος, καὶ πᾶσα δόξα ἀνθρώπου ὡς ἄνθος χόρτου. Τὸ γὰρ ὀλιγοχρόνιον τῆς ζωῆς, καὶ τὸ ἐν ὀλίγῳ περιχαρὲς καὶ ἱλαρὸν τῆς ἀνθρωπίνης εὐημερίας, καιριωτάτης παρὰ τῷ προφήτῃ τετύχηκε τῆς εἰκόνος. Σήμερον εὐθαλὴς τῷ σώματι, κατασεσαρκωμένος ὑπὸ τρυφῆς, ἐπανθοῦσαν ἔχων τὴν εὔχροιαν ὑπὸ τῆς κατὰ τὴν ἡλικίαν ἀκμῆς, σφριγῶν καὶ σύντονος, καὶ ἀνυπόστατος τὴν ὁρμὴν, αὔριον ὁ αὐτὸς οὗτος ἐλεεινὸς, ἢ τῷ χρόνῳ μαρανθεὶς, ἢ νόσῳ διαλυθείς. Ὁ δεῖνα περίβλεπτος ἐπὶ χρημάτων περιουσίᾳ· καὶ πλῆθος περὶ αὐτὸν κολάκων· δορυφορία φίλων προσποιητῶν τὴν ἀπ' αὐτοῦ χάριν θερα πευόντων· πλῆθος συγγενείας, καὶ ταύτης κατεσχημα τισμένης· ἑσμὸς τῶν ἐφεπομένων μυρίος τῶν τε ἐπὶ σιτίων καὶ τῶν κατὰ τὰς χρείας αὐτῷ προσεδρευόντων, οὓς καὶ προϊὼν καὶ πάλιν ἐπανιὼν ἐπισυρόμενος ἐπίφθονός ἐστι τοῖς ἐντυγχάνουσι. Πρόσθες τῷ πλούτῳ καὶ πολιτικήν τινα δυναστείαν, ἢ καὶ τὰς ἐκ βασιλέων τιμάς· ἢ ἐθνῶν ἐπιμέλειαν· ἢ στρατοπέδων ἡγεμονίαν· τὸν κήρυκα μέγα βοῶντα πρὸ αὐτοῦ· τοὺς ῥαβδούχους ἔνθεν καὶ ἔνθεν βαρυ τάτην κατάπληξιν τοῖς ἀρχομένοις ἐμβάλλοντας τὰς πληγάς· τὰς δημεύσεις· τὰς ἀπαγωγάς· τὰ δεσμωτήρια, ἐξ ὧν ἀφόρητος ὁ παρὰ τῶν ὑποχειρίων συναθροίζεται φόβος. Καὶ τί μετὰ τοῦτο; Μία νὺξ, ἢ πυρετὸς εἷς, ἢ πλευρῖτις, ἢ περιπνευμονία, ἀνάρπαστον ἐξ ἀνθρώπων ἀπάγουσα τὸν ἄνθρωπον οἴχεται, πᾶσαν τὴν κατ' αὐτὸν σκηνὴν ἐξαπίνης ἀπογυμνώσασα, καὶ ἡ δόξα ἐκείνη ὥσπερ ἐνύπνιον ἀπηλέγχθη. Ὥστε ἐπιτέτευκται τῷ προφήτῃ ἡ πρὸς τὸ ἀδρανέστατον ἄνθος ὁμοίωσις τῆς ἀνθρωπίνης δόξης. 5.3 Βλαστησάτω ἡ γῆ βοτάνην χόρτου, σπεῖρον σπέρμα κατὰ γένος καὶ καθ' ὁμοιότητα. Ἔτι καὶ νῦν ἡ τάξις τῶν φυομένων μαρτυρεῖ τῇ πρώτῃ διακοσμήσει. Ἡ γὰρ βλάστησις καθηγεῖται πάσης βοτάνης καὶ πάσης πόας. Εἴτε γὰρ ἀπὸ ῥίζης ἐκδίδοταί τι ἐκ τῆς κάτωθεν προβολῆς, ὡς κρόκος καὶ ἄγρωστις, ἀναβλαστῆσαι δεῖ καὶ ἐπὶ τὸ ἔξω προκύψαι· εἴτε ἀπὸ σπέρματος, καὶ οὕτως ἀνάγκη πρῶτον βλάστησιν, εἶτα βοτάνην γενέσθαι, εἶτα χόρτον χλοάζοντα, εἶτα τὸν καρπὸν ἐπὶ ξηρᾶς ἤδη καὶ παχείας τῆς καλάμης ἁδρυνόμε νον. Βλαστησάτω ἡ γῆ βοτάνην χόρτου. Ὅταν εἰς γῆν καταπέσῃ τὸ σπέρμα συμμέτρως νοτίδος καὶ θέρμης ἔχουσαν, χαῦνον γενόμενον καὶ πολύπορον, τῆς παρακειμένης γῆς περιδραξάμενον, τὰ οἰκεῖα καὶ σύμφυλα πρὸς ἑαυτὸ ἐπισπᾶται. Ἐμπίπτοντα δὲ τοῖς πόροις καὶ περιολισθαίνοντα τῆς γῆς τὰ λεπτότατα μόρια, ἐπὶ πλέον ἀνευρύνει τοὺς ὄγκους
