having received those of Christ, we will no longer have need of the old ones. 1.10.23 He alone, then, of all who have ever been, being the pre-cosmic Word of God, 1.10.23 and high priest of all intelligent and rational creation, having set apart from the flock of men one who was of like passions with us, as a sheep and a lamb, and having inscribed on him the sins of us all, and having attached to him the curse assessed in the Law of Moses, because indeed Moses declared, "Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree," he himself suffered this for our sake, "having become a curse for us"; and indeed having made him sin for our sake, 1.10.24 since "him who knew no sin, he made to be sin for us," and having laid on him for our sake all the punishments hanging over us, bonds and dishonors and insults, and scourges and dreadful blows, and above all the trophy of the curse, 1.10.25 after all this, having consecrated him as a wonderful sacrifice and choice victim to the Father, he offered him up for the salvation of us all, handing down to us also a memorial to offer continually to God instead of a sacrifice. 1.10.26 This the wondrous David among the prophets, foreseeing the future by the divine Spirit, also proclaimed, saying: "I waited patiently for the Lord, and he attended to me, and heard my prayer, and brought me up out of a pit of misery, and from the mire of dregs. And he set my feet upon a rock, and directed my steps. And he put into my mouth a new song, a hymn to our God." 1.10.27 And what the new song happens to be, he clarifies, saying next: "Sacrifice and offering you did not desire, but a body you prepared for me. Whole burnt offerings and sin offerings you took no pleasure in. Then I said, Behold, I come; in the volume of the book it is written of me, to do your will, O God, I desired." And he adds: "I have proclaimed the good news of righteousness in a great congregation," 1.10.28 clearly teaching that instead of the ancient sacrifices and whole burnt offerings, the incarnate presence of Christ and his prepared body have been offered to God, and he preaches this very thing to his church, as a great mystery "in the volume of the book" proclaimed beforehand by the prophetic voice. Having received the instruction to celebrate the memorial of this sacrifice upon a table through the symbols of both his body and his saving blood according to the ordinances of the new covenant, we are again taught by the prophet David to say: "You have prepared a table before me, in the presence of my enemies; you have anointed my head with oil, and your cup which makes me drunk is most excellent." 1.10.29 Indeed, in these words are plainly signified both the mystical anointing and the sacred sacrifices of the table of Christ, through which we have been taught to offer, throughout our whole life, by consecrating the bloodless and rational sacrifices acceptable to him, to the God over all, through his high priest who is above all. 1.10.30 This also the great prophet Isaiah wondrously foreknew and foretold by the divine Spirit. For he too says thus: "O Lord my God, I will glorify you, I will sing praise to your name, for you have done wonderful things." 1.10.31 And what these truly wonderful things are, he makes clear, saying next: "The Lord of Sabaoth will make for all nations; they will drink gladness, they will drink wine, they will anoint themselves with ointment. Deliver all these things to the nations; for this is the counsel upon all the nations." 1.10.32 Such were the wonderful things of Isaiah, promising the good fragrance and anointing with ointment not to Israel but to all the nations; whence, fittingly, from the anointing with ointment they have also been deemed worthy of the name of Christians. But he also prophesies gladness with wine for the nations, hinting at the mystery of the new covenant of Christ, which is clearly celebrated among all the nations at the present time. 1.10.33 And again, the prophetic oracles proclaim these incorporeal and spiritual sacrifices, containing them in this way: "Offer to God a sacrifice of praise, and pay your vows to the Most High, and call upon me in the day of trouble, and I will deliver you, and you will glorify me." 1.10.34 And

τοῦ Χριστοῦ παρειληφότες οὐκέτι τῶν παλαιῶν δεησόμεθα. 1.10.23 Μόνος δ' οὖν αὐτὸς τῶν πώποτε λόγος ὢν θεοῦ προκόσμιος, 1.10.23 καὶ ἀρχιερεὺς πάσης νοερᾶς καὶ λογικῆς κτίσεως, τὸν ἡμῖν ὁμοιοπαθῆ οἷα πρόβατον καὶ ἀμνὸν ἐκ τῆς ἀνθρώπων ἀφορίσας ἀγέλης, τούτῳ τε ἐπιγράψας τὰς πάντων ἡμῶν ἁμαρτίας, καὶ τὴν κατάραν γε αὐτῷ τὴν ἐν τῷ Μωσέως νόμῳ προστετιμημένην περιάψας, ὅτι δὴ Μωσέως ἀνειπόντος «ἐπικατάρατος πᾶς ὁ κρεμάμενος ἐπὶ ξύλου», τοῦτο πέπονθεν αὐτὸς δι' ἡμᾶς «γενόμενος ὑπὲρ ἡμῶν κατάρα»· καὶ δὴ καὶ ἁμαρτίαν αὐτὸν δι' ἡμᾶς ποιήσας, 1.10.24 ἐπεὶ «τὸν μὴ γνόντα ἁμαρτίαν ὑπὲρ ἡμῶν ἁμαρτίαν ἐποίησε», πάσας τε αὐτῷ δι' ἡμᾶς τὰς ἡμῖν ἐπηρτημένας τιμωρίας ἐπιθείς, δεσμὰ καὶ ἀτιμίας καὶ ὕβρεις μάστιγάς τε καὶ ἐκτόπους πληγάς, καὶ ἐπὶ πᾶσιν τὸ τῆς κατάρας τρόπαιον, 1.10.25 μετὰ δὴ πάντα οἷόν τι θαυμάσιον θῦμα καὶ σφάγιον ἐξαίρετον τῷ πατρὶ καλλιερησάμενος ὑπὲρ τῆς ἁπάντων ἡμῶν ἀνήνεγκε σωτηρίας, μνήμην καὶ ἡμῖν παραδοὺς ἀντὶ θυσίας τῷ θεῷ διηνεκῶς προσφέρειν. 1.10.26 Τοῦτο καὶ προφητῶν ὁ θαυμάσιος ∆αβὶδ θείῳ πνεύματι τὸ μέλλον προλαβὼν ἐθέσπισεν εἰπών· «ὑπομένων ὑπέμεινα τὸν κύριον, καὶ προσέσχεν μοι, καὶ εἰσήκουσεν τῆς δεήσεώς μου, καὶ ἀνήνεγκέ με ἐκ λάκκου ταλαιπωρίας, καὶ ἀπὸ πηλοῦ ὕλεως. καὶ ἔστησεν ἐπὶ πέτραν τοὺς πόδας μου, κατεύθυνεν τὰ διαβήματά μου. καὶ ἐνέβαλεν εἰς τὸ στόμα μου ᾆσμα καινόν, ὕμνον τῷ θεῷ ἡμῶν». 1.10.27 καὶ τί τὸ καινὸν ᾆσμα τυγχάνει, διασαφεῖ λέγων ἑξῆς· «θυσίαν καὶ προσφορὰν οὐκ ἠθέλησας, σῶμα δὲ κατηρτίσω μοι. ὁλοκαυτώματα καὶ περὶ ἁμαρτίας οὐκ ηὐδόκησας. τότε εἶπον, ἰδοὺ ἥκω, ἐν κεφαλίδι βιβλίου γέγραπται περὶ ἐμοῦ, τοῦ ποιῆσαι, ὁ θεός, τὸ θέλημά σου ἐβουλήθην». καὶ ἐπιλέγει· «εὐηγγελισάμην δικαιοσύνην ἐν ἐκκλησίᾳ μεγάλῃ», 1.10.28 ἄντικρυς ἀντὶ τῶν πάλαι θυσιῶν καὶ ὁλοκαυτωμάτων τὴν ἔνσαρκον τοῦ Χριστοῦ παρουσίαν καὶ τὰ καταρτισθὲν αὐτοῦ σῶμα προσενηνέχθαι τῷ θεῷ διδάξας, τοῦτό τε αὐτὸ τῇ αὐτοῦ ἐκκλησίᾳ εὐαγγελίζεται, ὡς ἂν μέγα μυστήριον «ἐν κεφαλίδι βιβλίου» τῇ προφητικῇ φωνῇ προαναπεφωνημένον. τούτου δῆτα τοῦ θύματος τὴν μνήμην ἐπὶ τραπέζης ἐκτελεῖν διὰ συμβόλων τοῦ τε σώματος αὐτοῦ καὶ τοῦ σωτηρίου αἵματος κατὰ θεσμοὺς τῆς καινῆς διαθήκης παρειληφότες, πάλιν ὑπὸ τοῦ προφήτου ∆αβὶδ παιδευόμεθα λέγειν· «ἡτοίμασας ἐνώπιόν μου τράπεζαν, ἐξ ἐναντίας τῶν θλιβόντων με· ἐλί πανας ἐν ἐλαίῳ τὴν κεφαλήν μου, καὶ τὸ ποτήριόν σου μεθύσκον με ὡς κράτιστον». 1.10.29 διαρρήδην γοῦν ἐν τούτοις καὶ τὸ μυστικὸν σημαίνεται χρῖσμα, καὶ τὰ σεμνὰ τῆς Χριστοῦ τραπέζης θύματα, δι' ὧν καλλιεροῦντες τὰς ἀναίμους καὶ λογικὰς αὐτῷ τε προσηνεῖς θυσίας διὰ παντὸς βίου τῷ ἐπὶ πάντων προσφέρειν θεῷ διὰ τοῦ πάντων ἀνωτάτου ἀρχιερέως αὐτοῦ δεδιδάγμεθα. 1.10.30 τοῦτο καὶ ὁ μέγας προφήτης Ἡσαΐας θαυμασίως τῷ θείῳ πνεύματι προέγνω τε καὶ προανεφώνησε. λέγει δ' οὖν ὧδε καὶ αὐτός· «κύριε ὁ θεός μου, δοξάσω σε, ὑμνήσω τὸ ὄνομά σου, ὅτι ἐποίησας θαυμαστὰ πράγματα». 1.10.31 καὶ τίνα ταῦτα ὡς ἀληθῶς θαυμάσια διασαφεῖ, λέγων ἑξῆς· «ποιήσει κύριος Σαβαὼθ πᾶσι τοῖς ἔθνεσι πίονται εὐφροσύνην, πίονται οἶνον, χρίσονται μύρον. παράδος ταῦτα πάντα τοῖς ἔθνεσιν· ἡ γὰρ βουλὴ αὕτη ἐπὶ πάντα τὰ ἔθνη». 1.10.32 τοιαῦτά τινα ἦν καὶ τὰ Ἡσαΐου θαυμάσια, εὐωδίας ἀγαθῆς καὶ μύρου χρῖσιν οὐ τῷ Ἰσραὴλ ἀλλὰ πᾶσι τοῖς ἔθνεσιν ἐπαγγελλόμενα· ὅθεν εἰκότως παρὰ τὴν τοῦ μύρου χρῖσιν καὶ τῆς Χριστιανῶν ἠξιώθησαν προσηγορίας. ἀλλὰ καὶ οἴνου τοῖς ἔθνεσιν εὐφροσύνην θεσπίζει, τὸ τῆς καινῆς τοῦ Χριστοῦ διαθήκης μυστήριον αἰνιττόμενος, ὃ παρὰ πᾶσι τοῖς ἔθνεσιν ἐναργῶς κατὰ τὸν παρόντα καιρὸν ἐκτελεῖται. 1.10.33 ταύτας δὲ πάλιν τὰς ἀσωμάτους καὶ νοερὰς θυσίας τὰ προφητικὰ κηρύττει λόγια, ὧδέ πη περιέχοντα· «θῦσον τῷ θεῷ θυσίαν αἰνέσεως, καὶ ἀπόδος τῷ ὑψίστῳ τὰς εὐχάς σου, καὶ ἐπικάλεσαί με ἐν ἡμέρᾳ θλίψεως, καὶ ἐξελοῦμαί σε, καὶ δοξάσεις με». 1.10.34 καὶ
