1.49 (49) Do not defile your mind by tolerating thoughts of desire and anger, so that you do not fall away from pure prayer and fall into the spirit of acedia.
1.50 (50) The mind falls away from boldness toward God whenever it becomes familiar with evil or filthy thoughts.
1.51 (51) The foolish man, being led by the passions, when he is moved by anger and becomes agitated, he rushes to flee irrationally from the brethren; but when again he is inflamed by desire, repenting, he again runs back to meet them. But the prudent man does the opposite in both cases. For in the case of anger, having cut off the causes of the disturbance, he frees himself from grief toward the brethren. And in the case of desire, he masters the irrational impulse and encounter.
14__188 1.52 (52) In the time of temptations do not leave your monastery, but bear bravely the waves of thoughts, and especially those of grief and acedia. For thus, having been tested providentially through afflictions, you will have a firm hope in God. But if you leave, you will be found unapproved, unmanly, and unstable.
1.53 (53) If you wish not to fall away from love according to God, neither let your brother go to sleep while being grieved with you, nor you go to sleep while being grieved with him; but go, be reconciled to your brother, and having come, offer to Christ with a pure conscience through fervent prayer the gift of love.
1.54 (54) If he who has all the gifts of the Spirit, but does not have love, is profited nothing, according to the divine Apostle; we ought to show all diligence, so that we may acquire it.
1.55 (55) If love does no evil to a neighbor, he who envies his brother and is grieved at his success and defiles his reputation with jests or plots against him with some malice, how does he not render himself a stranger to love and liable to eternal judgment?
1.56 (56) If love is the fulfillment of the law, he who bears a grudge against his brother and contrives deceits against him and prays against him and rejoices at his fall, how is he not a lawbreaker and worthy of eternal punishment?
1.57 (57) If he who speaks evil of a brother and judges a brother, speaks evil of 14__190 the law and judges the law; and the law of Christ is love; how does the slanderer not fall away from the love of Christ and become for himself a cause of eternal punishment?
1.58 (58) Do not give your hearing to the tongue of the slanderer nor your tongue to the hearing of the fault-finder, gladly speaking or hearing against your neighbor, so that you may not fall away from divine love and be found a stranger to eternal life.
1.59 (59) Do not accept railing against your Father, nor encourage the one who dishonors him, lest the Lord be angered at your works and destroy you from the land of the living.
1.60 (60) Silence the slanderer in your hearing, so that you do not commit a double sin along with him, by accustoming yourself to a destructive passion and by not preventing him from prattling against his neighbor.
1.61 (61) But I say to you, says the Lord: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, pray for those who mistreat you. Why did He command these things? So that He might free you from hatred and grief and anger and malice, and might deem you worthy of the greatest possession, that of perfect love; which it is impossible for one to have who

1.50 (ν') Τὸ τηνικαῦτα ὁ νοῦς τῆς πρὸς Θεὸν παρρησίας ἐκπίπτει, ὁπηνίκα πονηροῖς ἢ ῥυπαροῖς λογισμοῖς συνόμιλος γένηται.
1.51 (να') Ὁ μὲν ἄφρων ὑπὸ τῶν παθῶν ἀγόμενος, ὅτε μὲν ὑπὸ τοῦ θυμοῦ κινούμενος ἐκταράσσεται, φεύγειν ἀλογίστως τοὺς ἀδελφοὺς ἐπείγεται· ὅτε δὲ πάλιν ὑπὸ τῆς ἐπιθυμίας ἐκθερμαίνεται, μεταμελόμενος αὖθις προστρέχων ἀπαντᾶ. Ὁ δὲ φρόνιμος ἐπ᾽ ἀμφοτέρων τοὐναντίον ποιεῖ· ἐπὶ μὲν γὰρ τοῦ θυμοῦ, τὰς αἰτίας τῆς ταραχῆς ἐκκόψας, τῆς πρὸς τοὺς ἀδελφοὺς λύπης ἑαυτὸν ἀπαλλάττει· ἐπὶ δὲ τῆς ἐπιθυμίας, τῆς ἀλόγου ὁρμῆς καὶ συντυχίας ἐγκρατεύεται.
14__188 1.52 (νβ') Ἐν τῷ καιρῷ τῶν πειρασμῶν μὴ καταλίπῃς τὸ μοναστήριόν σου, ἀλλὰ φέρε γενναίως τὰ κύματα τῶν λογισμῶν καὶ μάλιστα τῶν τῆς λύπης καὶ τῆς ἀκηδίας. Οὕτω γὰρ οἰκονομικῶς διὰ τῶν θλίψεων δοκιμασθείς, ἕξεις βεβαίαν τὴν εἰς Θεὸν ἐλπίδα. Ἐὰν δὲ καταλιμπάνῃς, ἀδόκιμος καὶ ἄνανδρος καὶ ἄστατος εὑρεθήσῃ.
1.53 (νγ') Ἐὰν θέλῃς τῆς κατὰ Θεὸν ἀγάπης μὴ ἐκπεσεῖν, μήτε τὸν ἀδελφὸν ἀφῇς κοιμηθῆναι λυπούμενον κατά σοῦ μήτε σὺ κοιμηθῇς λυπούμενος κατ᾽ αὐτοῦ· ἀλλ᾽ ὕπαγε, διαλλάγηθι τῷ ἀδελφῷ σου καὶ ἐλθῶν πρόσφερε Χριστῷ καθαρῷ τῷ συνειδότι δι᾽ ἐκτενοῦς προσευχῆς τὸ δῶρον τῆς ἀγάπης.
1.54 (νδ') Εἰ ὁ πάντα τὰ χαρίσματα τοῦ Πνεύματος ἔχων, ἀγάπην δὲ μὴ ἔχων, οὐδὲν ὠφελεῖται, κατὰ τὸν θεῖον Ἀπόστολον· πάσην ὀφείλομεν ἐνδείξασθαι σπουδήν, ἵνα ταύτην κτησώμεθα.
1.55 (νε') Εἰ ἡ ἀγάπη τῷ πλησίον κακὸν οὐκ ἐργάζεται, ὁ φθονῶν τῷ ἀδελφῷ καὶ λυπούμενος τῇ εὐδοκιμήσει αὐτοῦ καὶ σκώμμασι χραίνων τὴν ὑπόληψιν αὐτοῦ ἢ ἔν τινι κακοηθείᾳ ἐπιβουλεύων αὐτῷ, πῶς οὐκ ἀλλότριον ἑαυτὸν τῆς ἀγάπης καθίστησι καὶ ἔνοχον τῆς αἰωνίου κρίσεως;
1.56 (νστ') Εἰ πλήρωμα νόμου ἡ ἀγάπη, ὁ μνησικακῶν τῷ ἀδελφῷ καὶ δόλους κατ᾽ αὐτοῦ σκευάζων καὶ κατευχόμενος αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐπιχαίρων τῷ πτώματι αὐτοῦ, πῶς οὐ παράνομός ἐστι καὶ τῆς αἰωνίου κολάσεως ἄξιος;
1.57 (νζ') Εἰ ὁ καταλαλῶν ἀδελφοῦ καὶ κρίνων ἀδελφόν, καταλαλεῖ 14__190 νόμου καὶ κρίνει νόμον· ὁ δὲ νόμος τοῦ Χριστοῦ ἐστιν ἡ ἀγάπη· πῶς τῆς ἀγάπης τοῦ Χριστοῦ ὁ κατάλαλος οὐκ ἐκπίπτει καὶ αἴτιος ἑαυτῷ γίνεται κολάσεως αἰωνίου;
1.58 (νη') Μὴ δῷς τὴν ἀκοήν σου τῇ γλώσσῃ τοῦ καταλάλου μηδὲ τὴν γλῶσσάν σου τῇ ἀκοῇ τοῦ φιλοψόγου, ἡδέως λαλῶν ἢ ἀκούων κατὰ τοῦ πέλας, ἵνα μὴ ἐκπέσῃς τῆς θείας ἀγάπης καὶ ἀλλότριος εὑρεθῇς τῆς αἰωνίου ζωῆς.
1.59 (νθ') Μὴ καταδέχου κατὰ τοῦ Πατρός σου λοιδορίαν μηδὲ προθυμοποιήσῃς τὸν ἀτιμάζοντα αὐτόν, ἵνα μὴ ὀργισθῇ Κύριος ἐπὶ τοῖς ἔργοις σου καὶ ἐξολοθρεύσῃ σε ἐκ τῆς γῆς τῶν ζώντων.
1.60 (ξ') Ἐπιστόμιζε τὸν καταλαλοῦντα ἐν ἀκοαῖς σου, ἵνα μὴ διπλῆν ἁμαρτίαν σὺν αὐτῷ ἁμαρτάνῃς καὶ σαυτὸν ὀλεθρίῳ πάθει ἐθίζων κἀκεῖνον κατὰ τοῦ πλησίον φλυαρεῖν οὐκ ἀνακόπτων.
1.61 (ξα') Ἐγὼ δὲ λέγω ὑμῖν, φησὶν ὁ Κύριος· Ἀγαπᾶτε τοὺς ἐχθροὺς ὑμῶν, καλῶς ποιεῖτε τοῖς μισοῦσιν ὑμᾶς, προσεύχεσθε ὑπὲρ τῶν ἐπηρεαζόντων ὑμᾶς. ∆ιὰ τί ταῦτα προσέταξεν; Ἵνα σε μίσους καὶ λύπης καὶ ὀργῆς καὶ μνησικακίας ἐλευθερώσῃ καὶ τοῦ μεγίστου κτήματος τῆς τελείας ἀγάπης καταξιώσῃ· ἣν ἀμήχανον ἔχειν τὸν
