of the divine oracles and introducing foreign dogmas. But later, feigning repentance, he persuaded those who were powerful with the great emperor Constantine that he should be given a chance for repentance. And the emperor, accepting the petition, instructed the bishop of the imperial city to extend a hand to him who was seeking salvation. But the divine Alexander 83.416 (for he held the helm of that Church) first tried to persuade the emperor not to be led astray by the fabricated words of Arius. But when he saw that he was annoyed, he fell silent and left. It had been decided that Arius would be received in the morning; for it was a Saturday when these things were said. Therefore, the man truly of God, with two companions, running into the divine temple, beseeched the Master of the Churches, thrown upon the ground before the holy altars, and shedding tears, not to allow the wolf to be mixed with the sheep, if indeed, wishing to do the deeds of wolves, he concealed himself with the fleece of a sheep. They say that he also added this word to his prayer: but if you allow him to enter, having plotted such things, through your ineffable providence (for your judgments are unsearchable), free me, your servant, from this present life. Having made his prayer thus, he went up to his chamber weeping. But Arius, thinking that the emperor's promises would be confirmed, came forth around dawn. Then, his bowels urging him to an evacuation, he went into the public latrines, leaving his attendant servant outside. And suddenly his bowels, having been dissolved and evacuated, he died while sitting inside. When those sitting with him saw the affliction and cried out, the boy ran in, and seeing him dead, he reported what had happened to his own people. When the divinely sent plague was reported to the whole most populous city, they all ran together to the divine temple. And when they learned of both the emperor's promise and the priest's prayer, they hymned the protector of the Churches, and abhorred the impiety of the heresy. But nevertheless, even though these things had happened so, and the divine sentence had been shown very clearly, those who had received the disease persisted, sharpening their tongues against the Only-Begotten and the all-holy Spirit. But having written these things at length in the Ecclesiastical History, I think it superfluous to say the same things. Leaving aside, therefore, Eusebius, and Theognis and Theodotus of Perinthus, and Menophantus of Ephesus, and Patrophilus of Scythopolis, and the others, I will mention only Eudoxius. For the accounts concerning Aetius and Eunomius demand the mention of him. II. -Concerning Eudoxius. This Eudoxius was bishop of Germanicia, a city neighboring the Taurus; but scorning the small town, he hastened to Antioch, having learned of the death of Leontius. Then he seized the throne contrary to ecclesiastical laws. But having been driven out from there by imperial letters, and ordered to attend the synod gathering in Seleucia of Isauria, he arrived as commanded, but did not dare to enter the council, but ran to the city of Constantine, and flattering the imperial chamberlains, he persuaded them that the synod should be assembled there. And so that I may not prolong the account by saying everything 83.417 (for I have mentioned all these things in that writing), he was strong enough to seize the throne of that city as well, and to strip the Churches of the preachers of the truth.

Ὁ δὲ θεῖος Ἀλέ 83.416 ξανδρος (οὗτος γὰρ τῆς Ἐκκλησίας ἐκείνης κατεῖχε τὰ πηδάλια), πρῶτον μὲν ἐπειράθη πεῖσαι τὸν βασι λέα, τοῖς πεπλασμένοις Ἀρείου λόγοις μηδαμῶς ὑπαχθῆναι. Ὁ τοίνυν ἀληθῶς τοῦ Θεοῦ ἄνθρωπος, σὺν δύο τισὶ συνόντων, εἰς τὸν θεῖον νεὼν εἰσδραμὼν, ἠντιβόλησε τῶν Ἐκκλη σιῶν τὸν ∆εσπότην, πρὸ τῶν ἱερῶν θυσιαστηρίων ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς ἐῤῥιμμένος, καὶ δάκρυα προχέων, μὴ συγχω ρῆσαι τὸν λύκον τοῖς προβάτοις ἀναμιγῆναι, εἴπερ ἀληθῶς τὰ λύκων δράσαι βουλόμενος ἑαυτὸν συγκαλύ πτει τῷ τοῦ προβάτου κωδίῳ. Φασὶ δὲ αὐτὸν καὶ τόνδε τὸν λόγον προσθεῖναι τῇ προσευχῇ· εἰ δὲ ἐνδί δως αὐτὸν εἰσελθεῖν καὶ τοιαῦτα βεβουλευμένον διὰ τὴν ἄῤῥητον οἰκονομίαν (ἀνεξιχνίαστα γάρ σου τὰ κρίματα), ἐμὲ τὸν δοῦλόν σου τῆς παρούσης ζωῆς ἐλευθέρωσον. Οὕτω τὴν εὐχὴν ποιησάμενος, εἰς τὸ δωμάτιον δακρύων ἀνελήλυθεν. Ὁ δὲ Ἄρειος, νομίζων ἐμπεδωθήσεσθαι τοῦ βασιλέως τὰς ὑποσχέσεις, περὶ τὸ λυκαυγὲς προελήλυθεν. Εἶτα τῆς γαστρὸς πρὸς ἔκκρισιν ἐπειγούσης εἰς τὰ δημόσια εἰσ ελήλυθε λάσανα, τὸν ἑπόμενον οἰκέτην ἔξω καταλιπών. Ἐξαπίνης δὲ τῶν σπλάγχνων διαλυθέντων τε καὶ ἐκκριθέντων, ἔνδον καθήμενος ἐτελεύτησε. Τῶν δὲ συγκαθημένων τὸ πάθος θεασαμένων, καὶ βοησάν των, ὁ παῖς εἰσδραμὼν, καὶ τεθνεῶτα ἰδὼν, τὸ συμ βὰν τοῖς οἰκείοις ἐμήνυσεν. Εἰς πᾶσαν δὲ τὴν πο λυανθρωποτάτην πόλιν τῆς θεηλάτου μηνυθείσης πληγῆς, εἰς τὸν θεῖον νεὼν συνέδραμον ἅπαντες. Ἐπειδὴ δὲ καὶ τοῦ βασιλέως τὴν ὑπόσχεσιν, καὶ τοῦ ἱερέως ἔγνωσαν τὴν εὐχὴν, ὕμνησαν τῶν Ἐκκλησιῶν τὸν προστάτην, καὶ τῆς αἱρέσεως ἐβδελύξαντο τὴν ἀσέβειαν. Ἀλλ' ὅμως καὶ τούτων οὕτως γεγενημένων, καὶ λίαν ἐναργῶς τῆς ψήφου τῆς θείας ἐπιδειχθείσης, ἐπέμειναν οἱ τὴν νόσον εἰσδεδεγμένοι, κατὰ τοῦ Μονογενοῦς καὶ τοῦ παναγίου Πνεύματος ἀκονῶντες τὰς γλώττας. Ἀλλὰ ταῦτα διὰ πλάτους ἐν τῇ ἐκκλησιαστικῇ Ἱστορίᾳ συγγράψας, περιττὸν ἡγοῦμαι ταὐτὰ λέγειν. Καταλιπὼν τοίνυν Εὐσέβιον, καὶ Θέογνιν καὶ Θεόδοτον τὸν Περίνθιον, καὶ Μηνόφαντον τὸν Ἐφέσιον, καὶ τὸν Σκυθοπολίτην Πατρόφιλον, καὶ τοὺς ἄλλους, Εὐδοξίου μόνον μνησθήσομαι. Ἀπαιτεὶ γὰρ τούτου τὴν μνήμην τὰ κατὰ Ἀέτιον καὶ Εὐνόμιον διηγήματα. Βʹ. -Περὶ Εὐδοξίου. Οὗτος ὁ Εὐδόξιος Γερμανικείας τῆς τῷ Ταύρῳ γειτονευούσης πόλεως ἐπίσκοπος ἦν· ἀλλὰ τῆς πο λίχνης καταφρονήσας, εἰς τὴν Ἀντιόχειαν ὥρμησε, τὴν Λεοντίου μεμαθηκὼς τελευτήν. Εἶτα τὸν θρόνον παρὰ τοὺς ἐκκλησιαστικοὺς ἁρπάζει θεσμούς. Βα σιλικοῖς δὲ γράμμασιν ἐκεῖθεν ἐξελαθεὶς, καὶ κατα λαβεῖν τὴν ἐν Σελευκείᾳ τῆς Ἰσαυρίας ἀθροιζομένην σύνοδον κελευσθεὶς, ἀφίκετο μὲν ὡς προσετάχθη, εἰς τὸ συνέδριον δὲ εἰσελθεῖν οὐκ ἐθάῤῥησεν, ἀλλ' εἰς τὴν Κωνσταντίνου πόλιν ἔδραμε, καὶ τοὺς βασιλικοὺς θωπεύσας θαλαμηπόλους, ἔπεισεν αὐτόθι συναθροισθῆναι τὴν σύνοδον. Καὶ ἵνα μὴ πάντα λέ 83.417 γων μηκύνω (τούτων γὰρ πάντων ἐμνήσθην ἐν ἐκείνῃ τῇ συγγραφῇ), ἴσχυσε καὶ τὸν τῆς πόλεως ἐκείνης ἁρπάσαι θρόνον, καὶ τῶν κηρύκων τῆς ἀλη θείας τὰς Ἐκκλησίας γυμνῶσαι.
