churches he handed over to the Arian. Demophilus, bishop of Constantinople, for 12 years. ϛʹ. ξηʹ. ιηʹ. αʹ. δʹ. μδʹ. βʹ. In this year, the orthodox sent an embassy to the impious Valens when he came to Nicomedia, sending 80 clerical men, of whom the leaders were Theodorus and Urbanus and Menedemus, all of whom Valens ordered to be set on fire along with the ship; and all were burned up with the ship, the ship lasting as far as Dacidizoi. εωξγʹ. τξγʹ. ζʹ. ξθʹ. ιθʹ. βʹ. εʹ. μεʹ. γʹ. In this year, Valens the defiled gave permission to the Greeks to perform 59 sacrifices and festivals; and likewise he cherished and honored the Jews, terribly persecuting only the orthodox and those of the apostolic church. ηʹ. οʹ. κʹ. γʹ. ϛʹ. μϛʹ. δʹ. In this year, Valens, coming to Antioch of Syria, inflicted all manner of terrible things on the orthodox, killing many by the sword and drowning others in the nearby Orontes river. And likewise, taking Edessa, he did worse things, ordering Modestus the prefect to arrest the multitude of the orthodox gathering in the church of St. Thomas and to murder them. But the incident concerning the woman, who was dragging her child in haste to death, both shamed Valens and astonished the prefect and prevented the sacrilege, God having clearly arranged this. And he exiled Eusebius of Samosata to Thrace, at which time the saint was admired the more for voluntarily leaving the city and following those who drove him out, although the people would not allow it; and in his place the Arians put forward a certain Eunomius, a fiery Arian, with whom none of the Samosatenes would associate. When this man was bathing and urging the people to bathe with him, unless they had emptied the water of the bath into which Eunomius had entered and filled it with other water, they would not tolerate bathing, saying that the former had been defiled by Eunomius. When he learned this, he fled the city, being irreconcilably hated. And when he withdrew, the Arians put forward a certain Lucius, a manifest wolf. Likewise also in Cappadocia he was eager to hand over the churches to the Arians, seizing upon the opposition he met from the great Basil, who was then a presbyter of the church of Caesarea and was stirring up Eusebius the bishop to a zeal for orthodoxy, not to yield to the impiety of Valens. Artaxerxes, king of the Persians, for 4 years. Peter, bishop of Alexandria, for 1 year. 31st bishop of Antioch, again Meletius, for 25 years. θʹ. αʹ. καʹ. δʹ. ζʹ. αʹ. αʹ. In this year, while Valens was staying in Antioch, some were found plotting against him, and a crowd of impious men were put to death; 60 for they were carrying out the conspiracy by means of divinations and sacrifices. And when Athanasius, who had struggled much and labored much, departed to the Lord, having been bishop for 46 years, and 40 of them in persecutions and dangers for the sake of piety, Peter succeeded to the episcopate, whom the Arians drove out by means of a certain Magnus, treasurer of the imperial treasures; and they installed Lucius in his place. Then many of the orthodox men and virgin women were impiously tormented, and many also were perfected in tortures. But Peter went as a fugitive to Rome, to Damasus as one of like opinion; at which time he also wrote in a letter the horrible things done by the Arians in Alexandria. In the same year also Basil became bishop of the Caesareans, when Eusebius piously fell asleep. Year of the world 5866. Year of the divine incarnation 366. Valentinian, emperor of the Romans, for 11 years. ιʹ. Artaxerxes, king of the Persians, for 4 years. αʹ. Damasus, bishop of Rome, for 28 years. κβʹ. Demophilus, bishop of Constantinople, for 12 years. δʹ. Cyril, bishop of Jerusalem, for 35 years. ηʹ. Lucius, bishop of Alexandria, for 6 years. αʹ. Meletius, bishop of Antioch, for 25 years. βʹ. In this year Ambrose, after Auxentius, took charge of the church of Milan in this way: while the people were in sedition concerning the appointment of a bishop, Ambrose, being governor of the region
