a man under the charge of murder, the one who guarantees him will be a fugitive and not in safety. He who guarantees Satan guarantees injustice, promising to give him the fruits of injustice. And concerning this the Gospel also says that he was cast into prison for murder and insurrection. 351 28, 17a discipline your son and he will love you and give adornment to your soul; he will not obey a lawless nation. The lawless nation is the order of demons, which the disciplined son does not obey. 352 28, 19 he who works his own land will be filled with bread; but he who pursues idleness will be filled with poverty. He who purifies himself will be filled with knowledge; but the impure will be filled with ignorance. 353 28, 21 he who is not ashamed of the faces of the just is not good; such a man will betray a man for a morsel of bread. If the faces of the just are the virtues, he who is not ashamed of the virtues is not good. And if the faces of sinners are the vices, he who is not ashamed of the vices is good. 354 28, 22 an envious man hastens to be rich, and does not know that the merciful will prevail over him. Those who are now merciful, in the age to come, having been shown mercy by God and having become angels, will rule over the wicked. Such a dignity the Lord also promised to give his disciples, that they should sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel; and a throne is that on which the mind sits, spiritual knowledge gathering together those who have strayed from godliness. And "to judge" here signifies "to teach," as also in "open your mouth with the word of God and judge all things soundly," instead of "teach." At the same time, this also must be known, that the merciful man who has prevailed over the envious one, will not himself become envious, but will rather make the envious one merciful. 355 28, 28 in the places of the wicked the righteous groan; but in their destruction the righteous will be multiplied. If the wicked put away being wicked, they will become righteous; for destruction now signifies the removal of wickedness. Thus also the Lord, having destroyed Matthew the tax collector, bestowed righteousness upon him.
356 29, 1 a man who reproves is better than a stiff-necked man; for suddenly
while he is burning there will be no healing. He did not say that when the flame has ceased there is no healing, but while he is burning there will be no healing, as he evidently still has wood, hay, straw, since indeed for those who are burned, health is wont to be restored after the cauterization. 357 29, 2 when a righteous man is praised the peoples will rejoice; but when the wicked rule, men groan. As many as are under the principalities and the powers and the world rulers of this darkness, these certainly also groan. 358a 29, 3 of a man who loves wisdom his father rejoices; but he who shepherds harlots will lose wealth. But he who nourishes vices will lose knowledge. Otherwise. A good shepherd is a mind possessing dispassionate thoughts and a wicked shepherd is a mind possessing passionate thoughts. And if this is so, then a kid is a passionate thought and a sheep is a dispassionate thought. Therefore the Lord also places the kids on his left, but the sheep on his right; and he calls kids and sheep those possessing kids and sheep, that is, those having passionate and dispassionate thoughts. Thus also those who have the tares, he called tares, and those who have the wheat, wheat, naming them from their worst and best state. Such also is the saying in Paul, "love does not boast," instead of "he who has love." 359 29, 4 a righteous king raises up a country; but a lawless man digs it down. Christ raises up the rational nature; but the antichrist digs it down. 360 29, 7 a righteous man knows how to judge for the needy; but the wicked will not understand knowledge, and a poor man does not have a discerning mind. Therefore, a poor man is one who does not have a discerning mind. 361 29, 9 a wise man judges nations; but a worthless man, being angry
