having in the previous book discussed the way of true piety set forth as a teaching for all men, and the life in Christ, and having demonstrated and, as I think, persuaded, that it was not possible for all the nations, even if they wished, to live according to the laws of the Jews, now in the present work, taking up the account from the beginning again, I return to the testimonies from the prophetic voices, intending to make a more abundant response to our accusers from the circumcision, since they said that we have no share at all in the promises recorded among them; for the prophets, they say, were theirs, and for them the Christ was preached, whom indeed they are accustomed to call savior and redeemer, and for them to expect the recorded promises to be fulfilled; but that we are superfluous to these things, being of a foreign race, for whom the worst things are prophesied throughout all the prophecies; 2.Prooem.2 Therefore, in response to these things, come, let us make our answer to them from their own prophetic books. Now, that the Christ of God was promised among them and that his arrival proclaims redemption to Israel, not even we would deny, since this is admittedly and clearly shown throughout all their scripture; but to exclude the nations from the good things expected in Christ, as though promised only to Israel and not also to the nations, it is no longer right to concede to them, since they say this contrary to the testimony of the divine scriptures. 2.1.1 First, then, since they are accustomed to select the more favorable sayings concerning themselves and to recite these from memory, let us set against them the proofs from the prophecies themselves concerning the nations, showing that indeed countless prophecies foretold good and saving things for all the nations, and that they said the things promised to the nations would not otherwise be fulfilled than through the coming of Christ alone. 2.1.2 And stopping the argument here, we would have shown that it should be said that the expectation of the Christ of God applies not more to them than to us. And with the hope of the things promised having been shown to be of equal weight for Jews and Greeks, so that in this respect those from the nations who will be saved through Christ are in no way inferior to those of the circumcision, we will next prove abundantly that at the coming of Christ and the calling of the nations the divine oracles proclaim beforehand a complete falling away and rejection of the whole nation of the Jews, prophesying the better things for only a few of them and a number that can be counted, and declaring that their city will be captured along with the temple itself, and all their venerable things will be destroyed, which things have also been shown by their deeds to have been declared. 2.1.3 But how at one and the same time, at the coming of Christ, the sacred oracles prophesy a redemption from evils for Israel and an enjoyment of good things, and on the contrary a deprivation of good things and a falling away from the piety of God, we will make clear at the proper time. But for now let us proceed to the first point, having selected a few things from countless prophecies for proof of what has been said. 2.1.4 Since, therefore, they are accustomed to set before us the more favorable prophecies about themselves, as if the pre-existing things were promised to them alone, it is time for us also to bring forward in opposition and set against them the promises concerning the nations, which are found thus among their own prophets. 2.1.5 1. From Genesis. "And the Lord said, 'Shall I hide from Abraham my servant what I am doing? Abraham shall surely become a great and numerous nation; and in him all the nations of the earth shall be blessed.'" A mystery hidden and concealed from the many the oracle says he will not hide, but will reveal to the one beloved of God. And this was that concerning the blessing of all the nations, which was formerly hidden because all the nations in the times of Abraham were held by an unspeakable error of superstition, but now in our time this has been revealed, when through the evangelical teaching of our savior worshipping the same God as Abraham
