sea monsters, fish and reptiles, birds and quadrupeds, and wild beasts, and birds somewhere for the twelfth, man. Thus they teach that the thirty of the Triacontad was spoken of by the Spirit through Moses. But indeed that the molded man, in the image of the power above, has in himself the power from the one source. And that this is established in the place of the brain; from which flow four powers, in the image of the Tetrad above, called sight, hearing, the third smelling, and the fourth taste. And they say the Ogdoad is indicated through man in this way: as he has two ears, and as many organs of sight, and also two of smell, and a twofold taste, of bitter and of sweet. And they teach that the whole man has the entire image of the Triacontad thus: that in his hands, through his fingers, he bears the Decad; and in his whole body, divided into twelve members, the Dodecad. And they divide him, just as the body of Truth is divided among them, about which we have spoken before. Therefore, that the Ogdoad, being unspeakable and invisible, is understood as being hidden in the inward parts. 1.11.2 Again, they say that the sun, the great luminary, came into being on the fourth day because of the number of the Tetrad. And the curtains of the tabernacle, constructed by Moses, having been made of fine linen, and of hyacinth, and of purple, and of scarlet, displayed the same image among them. And they declare that the priest's robe, adorned with four rows of precious stones, signifies the Tetrad; and whatever such things are found in the scriptures that can be referred to the number four, they say came to be because of their Tetractys. Again, the Ogdoad is shown in this way: they say man was formed on the eighth day. For sometimes they wish him to have come into being on the sixth day, and sometimes on the eighth, unless they say that the earthy man was formed on the sixth day, but the fleshly one on the eighth; for these are distinguished among them. And some wish there to be another man, the male-female who came to be in the image and likeness of God, and that this is the spiritual one; and another, the one formed from the earth. And the economy of the ark in the flood, in which eight people were saved, they say most clearly indicates the saving Ogdoad. And that David, being the eighth of his brothers by birth, signifies the same thing. Furthermore, that circumcision, being performed on the eighth day, declares the circumcision of the Ogdoad above. And simply, whatever is found in the scriptures that can be referred to the number eight, they say fulfills the mystery of the Ogdoad. But also they say that the Decad is signified by the ten nations which God promised to give to Abraham for a possession; and that the economy concerning Sarah, that after ten years she gives him her own handmaid Hagar, so that he might beget a child from her, declares the same thing. And the servant of Abraham sent to Rebecca, giving her ten golden bracelets at the well, and her brothers detaining her for ten days; and moreover Jeroboam who received the ten sceptres, and the ten curtains of the tabernacle, and the pillars of ten cubits, and the ten sons of Jacob sent to Egypt the first time to buy grain, and the ten Apostles to whom the Lord appeared after the resurrection when Thomas was not present, prefigured, according to them, the invisible Decad. 1.11.3 And the Dodecad, in connection with which the mystery of the passion of the defect came to be, from which passion they wish the visible things to have been constructed, they say is found remarkably and manifestly everywhere, as the twelve sons of Jacob, from whom also are the twelve tribes, and the breastplate of varied colors having twelve stones, and the twelve bells, and the twelve stones placed by Moses under the mountain, and likewise those by Joshua in the river, and others on the other side, and those who bore the ark of the covenant, and those placed by Elijah at the whole burnt offering of the calf, and the number of the
